So, I got three Riptides, which means I have six Shielded Missile Drones.

I'm thinking about building all six of them without the missile part so they just look like Shield Drones, which I can then use for my Crisis/Broadside units.

So far this seems like a pretty good idea, as I can't for the life of me see why you would ever pay 25 points for one of these.

Any thoughts on this?

Make them missile drones for sure, you can attach an IC to a riptide if the riptide takes the drones. Also the drones are good for broadside units.

Why would I want to attach an IC to a Riptide? That just sounds like beardy shenanigans to me, not my style.

Each Broadside comes with a pair of Missile Drones already.

Because giving your Riptide a 2+ cover save (Shadowsun) or twin-linked tank hunter weapons that ignore cover (support commander) is good? There's nothing "beardy" about it, you're just using the units like they're meant to be used.

Personally I would not use shielded missile drones. I feel that they are too expensive and do too little. Whats more 36'' sounds like a long range but not when you are shooting a 72'' gun. I keep my riptides alive by keeping them out of fire not by hoping a sv4+ save will keep him alive.

It's hardly ruining them, I'm just not gluing the missiles on. Only Riptides and Broadsides can take a type of missile drone, and Broadsides get their own. Unless it's specifically worth taking the Shielded Missile Drones then there's no harm done.

I said it sounded like beardy shenanigans, I wasn't really sure what the implications were, now I know what you were referring to I can see it's not really beardy at all, but it is certainly a gimmick and never really worth doing.

Some sound tactical reasoning, thank you.

What you could do is equip the support commander with a drone controller to make the missile drones fire at BS5. Give the Riptide interceptor and skyfire. If it uses interceptor then it can still fire it's secondary guns along with the missile drones. It's a bit costly, but the unit gets some amazing bonuses.

Drone Controller specifically states it only works for Gun, Marker, and Sniper Drones.
