Man those naginata are awesome and would look great on the terminators. An all the scenery definitely got inspired by it. Think I'm going to call them the red dragons I've got an idea for there power packs citing off the vents an replace them with the dragon bits from the chaos marines bits. And thank you for finding the bits for me.

I wouldn't go too over the top Japanese...
Weapons and symbols are a fairly good idea but after that things get a bit... much.

So, I made a Japan-like chapter.
A couple o' tips if I can :
1) Never, ever, go over the top with Japanese name, you will look like a big big anime fan for the others (no offense);
2) If you're gonna take ispiration from the Japanese Feudal era (Ronin etc etc) I'll suggest to make a... imitation of the "bushido", the path of the warrior
3) Samurai, Ninja, let's use them. I dunno, scout are ninjas, Assoult Marines are Samurai etc.
So you can create a special unit, like the DC for the BA and the TWC for the SW
ps: make 'em a successor chapter of the White Scars since they are totally ispired to an Asian races poutpourri

Red Dragons is more a Chinese-ish name. I dunno, something about warriors... Emperor Warriors (since the Samurai were often the Japanese Emperor's bodyguard )

Whenever I write background for a Chapter.

I usually start with

1) Who's Geneseed
2) Colours
3) Founding
3) Any notable diveregence from the codex
4) Name
5) Home world and environment
6) Notable individuals/vessels
7) History and prvious conflicts.

Always served me well.

For geneseed, bear in mind that some geneseed is used far more than others. Ultramarines take up a huge percentage of geneseed used to create new chapters, with the Imperial Fists (IIRC) coming in a very far second; pretty much every loyal chapter's stocks after that are numbered in single-figure percentages.

Also remember that just because you have a certain geneseed does not mean you have to be like that chapter, so a chapter using Ultramarines geneseed can wildly diverge from the codex astartes if it wants, and Imperial Fists successors don't have to hide in huge forts, Salamanders don't have to be all into meltas and flamers.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

IIRC this is wrong. Ultramarines and their successors treat the Codex Astartes like we believers treat the Bible (it's an example). Or at least this is what the migthy fluff says.

Chrysanthemum Guard - Imperial Symbol

Go with white as the highlight color or the predominant color - color of death. You could use the color of the Chrysanthemum to denote which company they belong to.

I would think that you have a few choices but I think Space Wolves would fit the best. Individual prowess in combat, the access to the Sagas would allow for individual characters... Albeit Grey Knights would be an easy fit with Naginatas/Halberds...

Space Wolves can't make a successor chapter, too many flaws in the Canis Helix. It's too unstable.

Successors are not bound by their parent chapter at all. The Ultramarines may live and die by the codex astartes, but a successor chapter can choose to use it as bog roll if they want. They might be looked down upon by some, but others will hold them in higher regard for eschewing the codex.

True. But the geneseed does relect certain phsyical characteristics also or reflect army considerations,
Pale/Dark skin for Raven Guard or Salamanders
Black Rage, Unforgiven, unable to spit acid etc

Some of these reflect your army choice or paint scheme, thus although seemingly trivial, it can impact on the modelling and painting.

I thought that the dark skin for Salamanders was caused simply by growing up on Nocturne, and wasn't to do with the geneseed at all. I know that the pale skin of the raven guard is due to a melanchromic organ mutation, but as far as I am aware the Salamanders geneseed is mutation-free.

LOl, you want to really diverge, make the CSM with MoK. Berzerkers for the true elites. Plain MoK for the others... That way everyone can have a sword.

Lexicanum has it as a malfunction. Causing onyx skin and red eyes. Essentiall raven guard opposite.

I'd use the Black Templars rules, so you can make a CQC Chapter without problems like Black Rage, Canis Helix etc.

I think Vulkan was black skinned with red eyes, like those of nocturne. So those bearing his geneseed would be the same, it is a bit odd however. I also think the salamanders are one of the more 'isolationist' chapters iirc there are only a couple of canonical successors.

As far as a name i would recommend something like:
The Sons of Kobayashi or The sons of Shinji or something similar. Basically something very 40k but with a little japanese noun/name thrown in. I would avoid any conceptual japanese words like Bushido, Ronin and samurai as to me they seem a little hamfisted.

In fact I said: "use 'em for ispiration", not "use 'em", it's a big difference ^_^.
You can call bushido, for example, the Path of Honor, since Marines are all about honor and bitches... ehm, purity sigils

I don't think he was questioning anything you said; he was simply adding his own suggestions.

I was thinking of doing a name like " the sons of". Think it would work better and I think the black templars might be a good rule choice for them because I don't have to worry about specia l rules like the blood. I do like the wolves codex for there special rules like there sagas too but only for playing none of the fluff.

Did come up with a name for the chapter and a little fluff for them as while. They are the "Sons of Tokaji" a succsessor chapter to the white scars. They prefer close combat and each chapter master takes on tokaji as there family name in honor of there first chapter maste, Tokaji Yoshimatsu. That's the idea I have so far just have to work on it more.
