I was playing a game of 40K with a mate, and after moving my tau fire warriors into position i was told they could only fire at snap shots.

I checked the rulebook to find any mention of this (rapid fire weapons only able to fire snap fire after movement) and failed to find any. Afterwords 2 staff members of the Place I play at said the same thing, despite me not finding that rule in the book. They stated that it would be in the latest BRB FaQ... and after checking online on GW's website about it, there was no mention at all.

So I believe the internet could help me out here. Do rapid fire weapons get penalized for moving in any way anymore?

No, there is no penalty, they were wrong. You can move normally and shoot rapid fire weapons once to their max range, or twice at up to half range. BRB pg 52.

Compare it to the wording of Heavy Weapons for instance (BRB pg 51) where it specifies moving causing them to fire as snap shots.

If it comes up again I would challenge the staff on it, because they're flat out wrong. If it were to be FAQed, it would be because the rules were ambiguous or unclear. In this case, they're not.

Rapid Fire disallows Charging after you fire (actually i think its the only one for Relentless too, off the top of my head, where you cant charge after firing it) it does not force snap shots its not a heavy or ordnance weapon.

I assume disallowing a charge is explained by the doubletap taking concentration so you cant shoot it "on the go" like assault weapons. Either way, thats not the question lol.

Relentless still lets you charge after firing rapid or heavy weapons

I believe there is a table to cover this at the back of the BRB as well.

Whenever someone confronts you with a rule you've never heard of the best way to handle is to politely ask them to point it out to you. Ditto for the staff. Sounds like they were screwing with you.

^^This. After you have shown that Rapid Fire does not do what they think it does, the burden of proof shifts to them. And if they say it is in the FAQ, ask to see the FAQ entry. I always carry my relevant FAQs with me, printed out. I do occasionally reference them, and in this case it sounds like it would've been helpful.
They also could be getting confused about older editions. In 5th, there were some restrictions on moving and shooting Rapid Fire type weapons.
