Wherever they tell me

Afternoon Dakka,

Just a quick question to make sure I have this scenario right.

A team of 10 scouts with snipers is shooting
-Three 6's were rolled to hit, and 3 others hit.
-Separate the three 6's and roll those to wound, with 1 rend and 1 normal wound
-Roll the other three hits and get 1 normal wound.

Would I then use the rending shot to pick out who I wanted, have my opponent roll to save the normal wound - precision shot, then roll to save the normal wound?

This process just seems like Snipers are still pretty terrible, even with precision shot. Seeing as how you only have a 1/36 chance of actually getting what you want.

You can use both the rending and normal shot to pick out who you want, as they are both precision.

Not terrible - killing that melta or powerfist can be huge

I thought the precision shot model allocation was made prior to the 'To-Wound' roll? Not near a rulebook, so forgive me if I'm wrong.

Youre wrong. You only allocate succesful to-wounds, Precision Shot lets you choose where you allocate instead of following the normal rules, but it doesnt change WHAT Youre allocating - successful to-wounds.

Precision Shots allocate Wounds. Wounds are allocated after you roll To Wound.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

Happy - I was saying successful to-wound, rather than Wound, as there are so many times "Wound" is used it can be confusing

And I was still typing when your post went up so I did not see it. Otherwise, I would have not replied.

So do you separate the precision shots out, and roll those separately when rolling to wound? That's the part I'm not clear on.

Where does the belief that Precision Shots need to be allocated before rolling to-wound? I see it a lot and I have no idea why.

Yes, because otherwise you have no idea what shots were precision.

MSP - no idea, at all. Allocate only happens after rolling to wound, and PS just changes the rules on allocatin....

Wounds in the wound pool are grouped according Strength, AP, and special rules (p14). Assuming S+AP are the same in your scenario, you group according to whether they have Precision Shot, Rending, or Precision Shot AND Rending. As the attacker, you decide which order to process the groups in, but you must completely process one group before moving on to the next.

This isn't adding much to what everyone else said, except that you have to fully process a wound pool group before moving to the next one. I never get more than 1 Precision Shot, so I have no personal experience of the process
