So I've been reading over the new codex, but didn't really read the old codex at all and I'm a little confused by shield drones. The two interpretations of them I have are they are either incredible or useless. Does the shield drone confer the 4+ invulnerable save to everyone in the squad? Or does only the drone get this save and do nothing else but sit out front and get shot down? Thanks!

Just like the old codex only the Drone has the invulnerable save.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

For a new player, it is confusing. I had the same confusion my self when I started. The drone is there to sit in front as a sheild or get LOS! shots tossed to.

It's not very confusing, sorry.

A shield drone is 4+ invul so its really not so great anymore in value compared to the last codex. I'm swapping out for marker/gun drones because their save is a 4+ (non invul) and they actually do something beneficial besides (maybe) absorb an invuln shot at my unit.

They are of the exact same utility, the last edition maybe but not the last codex. They also are a great way of soaking up a couple of power weapon wounds before your commander bites it.

Yes gun drones are better for shooting than a flying ++ save but they do very different things.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

Agreed, shield drones have their uses - though perhaps not in great numbers. They're comparable to having that one storm shield guy in the front of your Deathwing unit - really he's there to bite the dust first.
Shield drones are particularly useful if you're worried about being hit by something that will cause ID to a valuable character.
