I ask this question to everyone who I have ever played D&D with and it always provokes pretty good answers.

You get to either has 1 magic item under 8,000 gold or get 1/day 2nd level spell or lower caster 3 spell for the rest of your real life. What would it be?

Since I can't find my PHB to look over spell lists, I'm not going to comment on that one for now, but itemwise, I'd have to say either an immovable rod or a headband of intellect +4. The latter for me, I think.

Or, though it's over the limit, a rod of wonder, just for gaks and giggle.

Tough choice. For spells, I'd take either detect thoughts or invisibility. For items, a folding boat (7200 gp) seems pretty cool.

Oooooo what a delicious question.

If divine spellcasting counts, definitely cure light wounds
If not, spider climb

Item wise, def a clear ion stone. You not longer need food or water to survive.

Gold can be found or more magic items. Gaining a new spell for life sounds great. Charm person and take complete advantage of it.

I think I'd take the spell in almost every case.

For a thief or cleric, Invisibility 3x times per day would rock. An invisible heal-bot!

For a front-line fighter, Blur or Mirror image.

For a ranged fighter, Gravity Bow (Pathfinder, not 3.5E) is extremely useful.

EDIT: Make Whole

Is probably my choice. It's a great way to make tons of money with no ethical quandaries whatsoever. Sensitive expensive things break all the time. I can either buy scrap and resell it, or have people pay me to do repairs at HIGHER than normal prices because I can do instantly and reliably every time. With zero expenditure on my part.

30cu/Ft covers a fair amount of really nice stuff. Best part is I could do it on the weekends while keeping my normal job until my reputation picks up.

As the flipside to Chongara's answer, I pick shatter. Breaking up any object of up to 30 pounds seems like a pretty sweet deal to me!

In pathfinder, it's only 2000 gold, so I'd assume it was about that in 3.5.

However, I agree with you that it is a wonderful magic item. A real steal at 2000 gp! Used mine all of the time.
