Well, I want some bikes in my Space Wolf army, But I dont know if I should use the Swiftclaws or ally in bikes, I dont know what bikes would be best for just a small group of bikes running arround helping out here and there. The problem I see with ravenwing is that you need a troop unit that isent bikes to take them..

Well if you ally in Raven Wing, you'd have to ally in a TAC squad and a Librarian too. The cost would mount up for what is essentially just FA bikes.
If you want bikes, then use Swiftclaws. Just make sure they're support for something else - drop pods, TWC, fast moving rhinos. On their own they'll just die.

You could just use your Wolf Guard, It's not Cheep, but the would make l Biker Gang. Just arm them with Chains and Tire Irons.

So I was pondering and calculating a bit and came up with this for Ravenwing Allies, How does it seem?

Librarian on Bike
Ravenwing Command Squad
5 Sniper Scouts
6 Ravenwing Black Knights

517 points

Should I get normal Ravenwings instead of the black knights? can you build the normal ones from the command squad aswell?

The issue is what does this contribute to a SW list? Black Knights are a weaker, faster version of TWC. The command squad is utterly pointless. The librarian is a pseudo-RP, the RP is just better. The sniper scouts are the only thing in that list that SW can't do.

They add cool biker models! XD I guess I could take vanilla marine biker allies, A Chapter Master on Bike, 5 bikes, And an attack bike. Thats 340 points for 6 bikes and 1 attack bike.. And the 5 bikes are troops..

Swiftclaws have twice the attacks of vanilla marine bikers, but only have WS and BS of 3 making me unsure if I should actualy go for them with my bad rolls.. Sure you can have 10 swiftclaws vs 8 vanilla marine bikers, but I dont know if I want 10 bikers, Seems like too big of a group.. They are nearly identical exept for the WS and BS diferences and diferences in attacks..

Well the BS of 3 is negated by the twin-linking and the WS of 3 doesn't drastically affect their output, but affects their receiving damage, however that's mitigated by T5.

The difference is you're not paying 140(ish) point tax on getting bikes, however those bikes you do bring will be scoring. I guess it depends on if you feel you need those scoring units in a SW list or not. Personally I'd rather use my GHs and ally in guard.

That's actually a cool idea, they should somehow make that an official rule in the Wolves book.

Merellin wrote:So I was considering expanding my space wolf army a bit and I was curious about quite a few units, Ulrik the Slayer and Bjorn the Fellhanded from HQ's aswell as Iron Priests from Elites and Land Speeders, Swiftclaws, Skyclaws and Fenrisian Wolves from Fast Attack. Are these units good? Do you use them and if so how? How do you equip them? Tell me about them ^_^

So you want to know about the 'off beat' options in the Space Wolves list? Fair enough! Here's my thoughts/experiences on the matter:

Ulrik the Slayer : Worthless. Far too expensive and doesn't actually bring anything good. A normal Wolf Priest is better in my opinion.

Bjorn the Fell-Handed : Awesome in the right list, but risky. You potentially give up a lot of Victory Points. Some of my opponents don't mind FW and so I run him in a Drop Pod list as my only HQ choice. This has the fun side effect of him being my Warlord, which means he can roll on the Warlord table. A scoring Dreadnought with AV 13 is hilariously fun! But he is also a massive risk as I can give up 2-4 VP if I lose him. More if I don't claim him as an objective. 99% of the time he is terrible though, just over priced and a liability.

Iron Priests : The only time they are good take is if you throw them on a Thunderwolf and take 4 Cyberwolves, and even then they aren't that great a pick. But can be fun in a fun Thunderwolf/Fenrisian Wolf Troop list. Won't be winning any games though unless it has no Objectives...

Land Speeders : Are bad in 6th edition, for all Space Marines. Too weak. They were one shot ponies usually before, they are lucky to get that shot now. Plus there are better uses for your FA slots (FW units, Skyclaws, Swiftclaws, Thunderwolves...)

Skyclaws : Are... interesting but not as good as Swiftclaws. 6th edition made Jump Infantry better, but WS3 leads to too many casualties in close combat for a small unit, even with T4.

Swiftclaws Are amazing! Bikes are incredibly strong in 6th edition. T5 means S10 for instant death, so its useful for your HQ on bikes. The additional special rules really make them useful, more so than Skyclaws. Still not as good as Thunderwolves though which is why you don't see them as often. Totally viable though. You aren't gimping yourself in some lists by taking them, WS3 or no.

Fenrisan Wolves are useless in a unit of their own. They are too weak. You can do cutesy things by taking them as Troops, but they can't score so that's only good for a theme list in non-competitive/friendly games. They are okay with Lone Wolves however.

Blood Claws are of limited use. If you take them, play to their strengths: numbers. If you aren't taking 14-15 Blood Claws, you are gimping yourself. They cost the same as Grey Hunters but are for the most part inferior. I have taken a unit of 15 with a WGPL w/ MotW, Wolf Priest w/ Saga of the Hunter, and Rune Priest w/ Storm Caller before however. 18 T4 3+/4++ (in the open) models with Fearless and Preferred Enemy and a smattering of power/rending attacks are usually fat enough screen to keep your Thunderwolves and Grey Hunters more or less intact. And if the enemy ignores them they have the numbers to do some damage. Plus they are scoring.

I hear some say to throw them in a LRC with Wolf Priest, but I'd question that. Grey Hunters with Ragnar Blackmane and a Wolf Standard would largely do more damage than 15 Blood Claws.

So really, these guys are largely not taken because you have better choices in-slot of comparable prices, and where you don't your Battle Brothers do! Never forget your allies, not in this edition and not with Space Wolves.

This is the only one I disagree with. I have actually done better with them in 6th than in 5th.
I run my in a squadron of three with Heavy Bolters and Typhon Missiles. With the new Damage Allocation rules it actually takes a lot to remove them all.
I just keep them in my backfield “Flitting” back and forth. When combined with my Long Fangs I can do a lot damage to both Mechanized and Infantry.

As an aside, I went out digging for old models while on vacation and found an old Wolf Guard model with a mechanical prosthetic leg and an original Urlik model for like $10 together. Both painted HORRIBLY, but hey, metal models strip SO easy!

Plan on using Ulrik as just a standard wolf priest, but cool grab. I love finding old, cool models for cheap

ON TOPIC:
I hate land speeders. I am not a fan. I am warming up to the idea of Skyclaws just because I have an itch to paint assault marines. I think you have to go "ALL IN" for Skyclaws to work, though.

I think part of the trick of using some of these guys is to combine them with other standard tricks. Whats fun also is that its not your typical SW list, as such it might just throw people off.

Logan's Heros - 1995

HQs
Logan Grimnar
Ulrik the Slayer
Wolf Priest with Saga of Hunter

Elite -
Wolf Guard x3 (Arjac, stock guy with no equipment, one guy with PF/LC)

Troops -
Grey Hunters x10 with two plasma guns, MOTW, banner
Grey Hunters x10 with two plasma guns, MotW, banner
Grey Hunters x5 with banner
Blood Claws x15 with two Plasmaguns and one Pfist

Fast Attack
Thunderwolf Cav x3 (one guy with both pfist and SS)

HS -
Longfangs x5 (four multi-meltas, drop pod)

Fortifications
Bastion with Ikarus Lascannon

Deployment -
Logan, Arjac, longfang squad goes into drop pod.
The bastion gets placed practically ontop of one objective in my deployment zone. Ulrik goes ontop of the Bastion to man the lascannon. Single lone Wolfguard (scoring) goes in the Bastion to man the heavy bolter and claim the objective.
Last Wolf guard (with weapons) joins the bloodclaw unit as well as the wolfpriest and they get put into reserves to outflank.
Thunderwolves are deployed either behind the bastion out of LOS (if going second) or right up front if going first.
Both 10 man GH squads run up a flank to opponents objective with the 5 man squad sits back in cover on another home objective.

Game plan - On turn 1 the drop pod comes down, using relentless we inflict 4 multimelta shots and one arjac hammer throw split however needed. Both 10 man GH squads rush up field as do the T-wolves. Ulrik shoots a BS5 lascannon at something.
Turn 2 - 3 rince and repeat as Ulrik shoots at incomming flyers and large blood claw units comes in on the flank and threatens something big. Getting plasma shots off as they approach. If Someone decides to shoot/assault grimnar and his group... hoboy thats just a good time for all. The T-wolves are dug in getting S10 WS5 A5 attacks on something. Good times once again.

It seems like it would be a really fun and aggressive. LD issues are mitagated because of Ulrik and his ability as well as logans LD10 and arjac stubborn. The army has 5 scoring units with one inside an AV14 bunker (which he can exit out of LOS to claim the hidden objective.

Yeah, you have to play the mission (and its easier to do with 5 scoring units), its not quite so plug and play, but the look on the other guys face when he plays against a SW list that has no missile launchers in it has got to be worth something. Also Arjac is only in there because he is a ton of fun. But for a little more competitiveness, you take him out and replace him with a basic termi with assault cannon and add two Wolfguard to the Bastion sitting unit. Then you put the two ten man Grey Hunter squads in drop pods. Now you really are in the enemies face and playing very strongly into the SW strengths.

It is funny, after posting that I ended up discussing tactics with one of my gaming buddies and he agrees with you. I'm personally not sold on them yet until I jump through the BRB one more time, but my friend says I've overlooked the rules for Fast Skimmers which shore up a lot of their vulnerability problems.

I used to run them all the time in 3rd Edition because Long Fangs were so spendy (point wise) and I needed heavy weapons. Given we still only have a handful of heavy weapon platforms I think I need to take a second look at these.
