Just read this and had to post it up, it made me laugh, but is just so indicative of the guard mentality.
I thought others might get a kick out of it or be reminded for those who have already read the novel.
‘For the next few days, you’re in the Imperial Guard. First rule of the Guard: Go forward. If you get lost, you go forward. You lose your way? You go forward. You fall away from your group? You go towards the enemy. That’s where you’ll do the most good, and that’s where you’ll find your friends. Understood?’
General assent answered this, too. It came with a little more reluctance.
‘Right. Next groups!’
Now go fight the fungal reproducing gargantuan war loving ape monsters!
Cheers to all and a happy 4/20 for those that partake.

The funny thing about this is,if you put in to the tabletop the quote would just be, sit back. Sit back and shoot. Not sure what to do. Sit back and shoot.

If I am playing with a team mate, am I allowed to say "You will advance!", and shoot him if he disobeys?

If you dress up as a Commissar, yes

Yeah I finished Helsreach last night, it was a really good read, even if the Templars are a bit to high and mighty for my taste. And definetly, the whole book is great for human astartes interaction. I also loved the part where the priest bails from the titan, gave me a good chuckle imagining it.
Make a commisar outfit and build a bolt pistol and no one will argue with you!

It is one of the best 40k novels I've read up to now. All the scenes with that IG spec-ops guy are awesome. I also love the scene where one of the IG officers in a meeting suggest giving up and evacuating the city.

"We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "feth" on their airplanes because it's obscene!" (Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now)
And you know what's funny? "feth" is actually censored on a forum about a dystopia where the nice guys are the ones who kill only millions of innocents, not billions. |

The entire book is full of awesome. Although, the best speech is when Grimaldus is speaking to city before the siege starts, it gave me chills, my heart raced, and I wanted so bad to be there.

The last line of the book was my favorite.
I dare not repeat it and risk stealing that moment from future readers.

Helsreach is the best Space Marine Battles novel BY FAR.
And the best characters aren't the marines. Andrei is one of my favorite characters in any novel.

But yeah, that was some quality power-writing. Maybe it was Melodic Speed Writing, but I think it was more like European Power Writing. Kind of. If you get my meaning.

Andrei! That was his name. Yeah, he rocks. So do the Titan's priest and princeps. Actually, come to think of it, most of the characters in this novel just simply feel right - they aren't too shallow, but they're not uselessly complex either, and none of them really are archetypes, carbon copies or mary sues.
