Hi! Let me start off by saying that I'm new to all of this. I've been somewhat of a lurker of the genre for quite some time. Now I finally have a job that can finance it and a friend of mine who's taking a plunge into the world of 40k with me!
I'm currently building up a tau army. I was thinking of making a thread in the painting forums of my first ventures into this. Let me know if anyone's interested.
Also any comments or helpful suggestions are always welcomed!
Welcome oh lord of many layers (like an ogre) to that most wretched hive of scum and villiany known to the shrek loving kids at the local mall as dakkadakka.com.
Also a PM thread detailing your first steps is a great way to get feedback and stay motivated.

I love how when you play 'xcom: enemy unknown' you learn a bunch of the flags of other countries. You see i already know he's from nigeria because of that game. Pssh like parents and teachers know what they're talking about when they say games don't teach....while letting me defend earth from an alien invasion. Hey it might be useful some day. Who knows?
That game seriously needs a 'street fighter' mode. Just saying a dude beating the crap out of a car as a bonus stage would be a plus to that game.

If tau is what you're into go for it. Sometimes people go for what's new and exciting. I try to shy away from codex jumping fever every time another army gets re-released. I don't have it for every army (because i don't like nids or space wolves) but be sure it's something you like the feel of as far as play style and fluff goes. Personally i think dark eldar are all about style but the models were too outdated at the time. Now that they're incredibly fantastic and i am getting tired of playing horde armies with ranged elements i plan on doing something more hit and run focused with plenty of pain to offer. Dark eldar also have hover bikes and hover boards. How can you hate that? Only a fanatic that doesn't believe in gravity would hate that and they'd probably think it's still cool by (in their minds) flipping off the laws of gravity . So yeah imperials do hate that stuff even though they're all in space.

Actually! I'm in Afghanistan right now. Nigeria is just where the satellite pings off of.
But on another note. I do like the look of dark eldar, but I hate to say I fell in love with the tau battle suits that gak is awesome!
Btw..... xcom is such a punishing game....

I've played and beaten many classic ironman games 4-5 i think off of all the starting locations just about the hardest easily being south america due to how things are set up. It's just an easy continental bonus to get with just 2 countries and your main country gives you a measly 80 fake-o-bucks.
Currently i'm finishing up my impossible difficulty game but i took it off ironman mode. Impossible on ironman mode is just far too difficult.
I'm planning to do the 'slingshot' DLC soon and later that upcoming xcom DLC that they had a cool trailer for over here.
