Hey Dakkarites, I am slowly painting up some more orks, but with the prices doubling here recently it is putting a serious damper on my purchases. Now I want to get a box or two of lootas and then convert another 10 or so normal boyz into lootas and then chuck the flamers onto normal boyz. Is there and easy and effective way to convert normal boyz into convincing lootaz?

NExt little project is to get a box of nobz, mainly for the power klawz, but I already have 21 of those black reach nobz, so I don't want to shell out a fortune for more of these guys if they've only got one or 2 power klawz in there. Is there a simple way to convert these suckers to having convincing looking power klawz?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Johnny!
Things are getting stupid down here (That's why I'm building most of my Ork stuff out of styrene). I still can't find a March issue of White Dwarf! Making stuff for burnas and lootas is easy. Most Ork kits are brimming with extra guns and wotnots. Scratchbuilding weapons for Orks is easy.

The Nobz kit has 3 power klaws in it, 4 big choppas, and 2 cybork arms. You can make power klaws with these bits combined with others pretty easily. Plus, there are plenty of ways to make a power klaw, just google "how to make ork power klaw?" The best are made out of plasticard, but here's one of my personal favourites:

It's a little harder to make lootas, since they have shoulder-slung weapons and they don't usually have a "striding" pose. I would just use a combination of the shoota support arms and choppa & slugga arms, cutting off all the actual shootas to make bigger guns. There aren't many tutorials, but MrMerlin has plenty of cool Ork stuff! http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/409193.page

Your final option is eBay, which will allow you to get plenty of cheap parts. You could just order some loota bits off a buyer close to home or with low shipping cost.

or just order some Gun bits from races other than orks to mash them in with your leftover bits to make More DeffGunz..
AOBR Boyz and Regular Boyz convert to Burnas just fine ..Loootas take a bit more thought ..the Guns need to be multiple barrled they do Not have to be shoulder mounted to been seen as obvious DeffGuns thou it helps..

Awesome stuff, thanks for the tips and replies.

Pretty much all of my stuff is black reach, so I am very unfamiliar with the standard kits.

I also don't have the codex, as I know it will be replaced shortly, so in the interim I will paint up my army first, then when they get released I will shell out for it and be able to start playing straight away.

I think that perhaps I shall take some spare space marine gun bits and then make multi-barrelled craziness from that for the lootas.

Thanks again everyone. Big help.

Its not impossible to get a codex for free, if you do some searching. But i'd recommend it simply for the fluff. The ork background gives you some great insight into how far you can actually go. For example in the ork background it roughly says that meks often don't understand the technology at all and it simply works and often works how they want it to even when it shouldnt (supposed to be something related to ork biology). So basically an Ork could have something that makes no sense but it still operates as the ork wished it to. In this you could then create some pretty fantastical loota weapons for your orks.

I am currently in the process of designing my loota squad which will be scratch built weapons/conversions. These are some of my ideas:
  • Tyranid arm mutation - I have a large tyranid weapon that I am going to use to completely replace the loota's arm with in the idea that it has been spliced on by a crazy pain boy. With a little green stuff work and some power cables.
  • Back pack mounted turrets, using plasticard rod.
  • Other plasticard built weapons.

  • In honesty most of my inspiration came from reading/looking at: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/blog/426770.page Which was already linked earlier by Corpus 6667
So get over there and have a browse. But in all, so long as you feel like they look like good representations of loota's you don't really have many other constraints to work to. Keep them big/multibarreled and looking nasty

    Have fun and good luck!

Yeah, lootas don't have to mimic the shoulder frame of the standard GW models, they just have to look like they're armed with a ridiculously shooty weapon that can't be confused for a rokkit or big shoota.

I have about a dozen Lootas and not one of them is an official GW Loota.

A bits box and a bunch of spare boys can go a long way. Many players actually complement me on having unique models.

Popsicle sticks can often replace plastic card, for those of us who just can't find the damn stuff anywhere.

Ebay? I got a whole load off ebay from a manufacturer in china at what I would say was a very good deal. It was just an assortment rather than specific items but I remember looking at the prices of other sellers and it was a good deal cheaper.

I think you quoted the wrong post, but if it's from China it's probably always going to be assortments and recasts. It's much better to buy locally anyway, since shipping will be lower and faster.

Converting normal Ork boys to burnaz is easy. Just use the torso of one of the boyz and the arms, head and weapon/backpack left over from the loota kit. These guys torso's came from the battle wagon kit, but the AOBR boyz can easily be trimmed to fit
