I have just downloaded Wargame Dice for my ipad, it solves the issue of dice on the floor and it has a scatter die... but what other apps are good? IS it worth getting the battle assistant things or not?

Sooooo, how does a scatter die work? do you not move your ipad? align it with a specific spot on the table?

actually, i just downloaded it, its quite nice, it even tallies up the numbers of hits for you, and separates them for sixs and such, and you can do several different pools. I wont use it for my smurfs or tau as much, but when i run foot guard i have a feeling my opponents will appreciate it instead of rolling 78 FRFSRF dice

The problem with dice apps and similar random number generators is that they tend to not be particularly random, so people distrust them.
Of course, many dice are also not perfectly random, but that's mitigated somewhat by rolling lots of them at once.

Are the Ipad versions of the codices any good? Assuming you don't already own the print version. That might be convienent for searching and such.

There's some great features in them. The ability to search via text, tapping a rule to get the full rule from the rulebook, bookmarks and others make them more convenient than using the print book. For the colour fluff sections, there's expanded content, some images can be flipped through, the 360 views from the website are in the gallery pages, etc. The downside is they're charging the exact same price as the hardcove book. I understand there's work that's gone into making these, but not nearly enough to justify more than half of the hardcover price at absolute most. My only issue with them content wise is they could have gone the extra step and built an army builder into each book, which would have been really neat. Missed opportunity.

When people put Ipads on the gaming tables at my club, other people tend to use them as coasters (because frost rings from drinks might damage the board surfaces).
We do inform them loudly beforehand, though. In the sense of "it's convenient that someone left this great drinks tray on the table for me to rest my beer on".
It usually suffices to get them scurrying to get it off the table forthwith.

That's nice. Instead of 'hey, can you take that off the table' you say 'hey, we're going to ruin your personal property worth ~$700 for kicks'. I thought you said you didn't allow children in your club to get away from immaturity?

Battlescribe is a nice (free) army builder app, but I dislike the output.

I don't fully understand how to use the app. How do you set to reroll ones to hit, reroll all failed hit, reroll wounds. As a nid player I kinda need how to do those on the app

That would be where the alcohol comes in...

Unless you are playing some green tide or apoc game, there is generally a spare corner of the table to put books/dice/codexes. An iPad is no different then the rest of the clutter that takes up that spot.
Besides the whole "It's cool to hate on Apple" thing...

I'm actually surprised no one has said it yet, because it was the only reason all 4 members of my gaming group - with 3 ipads between us - said we weren't gonna use the rolling apps:
I like the feeling of throwing dice across the table.
I like the physical feel of a handful of dice and I like the sound they make when they roll.
I like the first glance where you go "woah, that's a lot of sixes! hehehe!" and then tally it up and go "... and not a single 4 or 5 in 30 die... how is that possible!?"
I like looking at the other guy going "these two are standing on an edge... reroll or do we say one 1 and one 5?" (we call that a "knight" in Sweden, by the way.)
I like losing two die that rolled on the floor and rolling them again into the pile on the table.
I like how everything about a board game is without any technical gadgets. I work with that and I play a lot of games on that. Board game night is for board games.
