One of the major flaws I see with 6th edition is flyers. Not that the concept is bad, I like the idea of planes fighting in the skys while the war wages below. But because ground units have to snap fire at flyers and flyers get to fire at ground units at full bs it makes flyers too good. And I don't think I am the only one who feels that they are too good, nothing feels worst then playing against a flyer spamming army and feeling like you can't do anything in the game.

So to help balance fliers I propose that zooming flyers should always have skyfire, meaning while they are zooming they snap shot at ground units, just like how the ground units have to snap shot against them. If fliers want to fire at ground unites with full bs they must enter hover mode. This would add more tactics to flyers of whether you want to stay safe in the air peppering down shots that may hit and doing bomb runs or do you want to hover for a turn to shoot at something and leave your self exposed to the return fire. Flyers would still be very good because being able to choose when you are vulnerable makes them better than skimmers but it doesn't make them overly powerful because at some point they are going to be vulnerable.

This makes sense only for air superiority fighters up to a certain point. Infantry are seldom the prime target of direct fire weapons, but larger objects are.

I'm thinking of Warthogs and Stukkas here. Sure, Stukka used bombs, but the general way a Stukka attacked tanks can be used for missiles, rockets and gatlings as well.

Why am I saying this? Well, the Nightwing is one of the more (actually together with the Warp Hunter it's the only way to deal with a Land Raider that isn't going to cost you an arm and a leg) reasonably priced ways of dealing with Land Raiders and the Phoenix Bomber has strafing run, neither are capable of Hover.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

Strafind Run aircraft may be able to shoot without leaving zooming mode, but it'd increase their cost then

It could be interesting to have two aircraft categories
Fast Fighter / Interceptors with Skyfire
Slower Gunships without Skyfire

If aircraft would have skyfire all the time, people could just ignore them and make a ground-based army.

I wouldn't feel the need to spend loads of points to fend off a force that doesn't do much to my army.

This is basically it. Also, you have to realize that GW wants you to have a cinematic narrative to your game... so you can ignore the fact that zooming flyers really shouldn't be able to shoot crap reliably (even A-10's, AH-64's, and Spectre gunships miss half the time if they aren't firing missiles)

That just means they are BS 3
