Subject: How does the storm raven work as an assault vehicle?

So I'm wondering how the storm raven works as an assault vehicle? I have no experience with fliers but I read the FAQ for blood angels and it said that a storm raven that moved more than 6 inches must use the skies of blood rule. In this rule it states the unit cannot assault so is the assault vehical benefit lost now or am I missing something? Thanks:-)

Generally if the unit you're planning to put in them doesn't have a good invuln save (like hammernators) don't bother, the risk is too great.

It works terribly as an assault vehicle. You have 2 options for getting units into an assault with it:
1) A more dangerous version of deepstrike. Unit cannot assault until next turn. Earliest possible assault=turn 3
2) Storm Raven drops into hover, units assault out of it with assault vehicle special rule. Earliest possible assault=turn 3
There's also option 3:
3) Storm Raven gets shot down before it drops it's troops off. Everyone inside takes a S10 ignores-armor hit. No one assaults because they are all dead.

Be fair. On a 10-man squad theres the one bolter guy whos likely to survive

It works if you take a few of them, and the units dropped of are good enough to assault and destroy most of your opponents stuff. The only problem is that the storm raven has to survive around of shooting once reaching its destination. It will also be shot down right away once it goes into hover if you don't have enough of a threat. but if you play very aggressive I have seen it work miracles.

Taking a few Stormravens with actual units inside is a good recipe for getting tabled. The Stormraven is medicore empty, and gets bad when you try to use it as a transport. AV 12 HP 3 is just not that tough in the scheme of things. However the real killer is the reserve rolls.

The Storm raven's best usage is to troll armies with poor heavy-anti air like the Orks or Tyranids who are almost completely lacking in any reliable way to deal with fliers with an AV of 12 and above. (Unless the orks have Flakkadakka guns but still STR 7 vs AV12 is still odds in your favor). Given that the Stormraven will likely shrug off most incoming attacks from the Orks or Tyranids feel free to have them strike at juicy targets like Battlewagons or Hive Tyrants with their plentiful arsenals.
As a transport the Storm Raven is okay at best, but as a Gunship it has it's uses and is especially punishing to armies with bad HAA. Just don't try to ace combat it and expect it to do well against other fliers.

Important question: how to you resolve your comment for a TAC list? Is the Stormraven in or out?

Given the overprevalence of the IG's three Vs (Valkyrie, Vendetta, Vulture), Heldrake spam, and the Necron flying circus it is best to assume that most armies have heavy AA in abundance now. Ironically the vanilla marines are also lacking in heavy AA, as are the space wolves. As the Grey Knights not only have the storm raven but can easily make theirs better than yours, trying to play ace combat with them is not a good idea. Against the Tyranids though, get out a bottle to collect all the delicious tears because there will be much crying from the nids thanks to our almost complete inability to efficiently deal with AV 12 aircraft.

Short answer... if you want it as an assault vehicle, take a Land Raider instead. With BA in particular, this has the benefit of being a dedicated transport and not using up an FOC slot too.
Be aware that the Land Raider will draw a lot of fire, and doesn't have the benefit of hard-to-hit - however it has strong armour anyway, can pop smoke launchers on turn 1 to help and by turn 2 you're likely getting your unit into assault anyway.

And given the death of Leman Russ tank heavy lists, the lower prevalence of meltas, and the nerfing of Broadsides, Land Raiders don't have quite as much stuff gunning for them as they did in 5e. Be warned though, Necrons will make you cry.

I see, thanks for all your replies that's a shame I liked the idea of flying across the battlefield and dumping a unit and dreadnought to combat but now that's out the window cant see me getting one!

I use my Stormraven about 50% of the time, but always empty and mainly as a hedge against helldrakes. I find it helps a lot vs helldrakes, a hindrance against Vendettas, and a wash against everything else. It's a badass model too. It kills Dakkajets really quickly as well.

Other than for fluff reasons, i see no reason to take a storm raven as a transport. Its over priced for either role you want it to perform, especially if you can take ig allies as battle brothers.
