So i finally got around to painting the Dark Vengeance models and while painting the DAs, I was thinking about painting the CSMs with the DAs colors and using them as proxies. Or at least painting them as some Fallen who want to 'redeem' (depending on how you look at the fluff) themselves before the DAs and fighting for them.

What is your stance of using models from one army for another army?

Do they have WYSIWYG weapons and equipment? Sure, I don't care how your marines are painted.

Are they completely random models (for example, using Tau as Tyranids)? No, that's too confusing.

I'm open to proxies, but I'm strict on myself to doing the WYSIWYG so yeah. Or at least being close to what the model had, a example would be the CSM Chosen with the bolt gun in the Dark Vengeance set can have a combi-gun.

Again, I'm open to proxies from other people so long as I know who are who. But for myself, I plan to keep them as close alike as possible, such as SM models and CSM models, Tau models and IG models, etc.

But the imagery of Tyranids being proxied by Tau. Suddenly, those blue xenos aren't so funny in assaults now.

I have several Space Wolf, Blood Angel, and Dark Angel models painted up and serving in my Salamander army. (I even have a couple of Chaos Marines!) Tycho looks particularly smashing in green.

Mates playing games? I have no problem, we are all there just to have a bit of fun. Of course, nothing too outrageous!!

As long as the models are close to what they're portraying (so no 28mm proxy for DP etc) and it's not an entire army of confusing models then it's all good with me. Sometimes people want to try something before re-mortgaging their house.

Would you allow models from other games with similar bases to the model that you want to proxy, like the old Star Wars Miniatures models, to be used in your games so long as they are clear as to what they're standing in for?

I've seen someone use storm troopers from star wars as imperial guard stormtroopers. It made me grin xD

As long as its just aesthetics that are changed im fine, so long as you dont just put down a base with a pair of legs and say it has artificer armour and TH/SS

They're not that far off.

If they were adequately modelled as WYSIWIG and were proxied within reason, I'd allow it. I recently had to proxy a couple of BA Tacs to bulk out my CSM squads, and I made it clear beforehand so there was no confusion. Going along the lines as counting your Guardsmen as Tyranids, that's where I'd draw the line.
Regardless, I think it'd get pretty annoying after a few games, as personally, the idea of proxying is supposed to be temporary, such as if the models aren't finished yet or they're still coming in the post. After a while it'd soon stink of "I don't want to buy any more armies so I'll just use these as whatever I want".

I can understand that. The thing for me is that the other person who I shared the Dark Vengeance set with liked all the CSM models but didn't want the Chosen or the Chaos Lord (he has Typhus and Plague Marines instead) and I thought it would be a waste to just dump them in a corner and gather dust.

Well, chaos are still marines. The models are close enough as long you are making sure the equipment is right.

Sure. As long as it's WYSIWYG it's fine with me. I also don't mind small "proxies" that are easy to remember like a 5-men Tomb Blade squad, 4 with Tesla and 1 with Particle Caster. I just warn "All TB have Tesla".

I have about 2000pts of Chaos right now, basically all Space Wolve Kits (the FLGS here sells them for 20 bucks for a pack of Grey Hunters). Basically a little filing, some backpack swaps and the appropriate fluff (mine being Malice worshiping Renegades who are constantly replenishing with newly corrupted marines hence the "newer" power armor and imperial symbols) Basically sutff I cant file off or I am afraid to I just paint a bloody X over.... IE Imperial Eagles on metal guys get Xed out.

So to sum up, go for it just swap out the backpacks and maybe file off some of the symbols

I don't like proxies at all. For trying out a unit before you buy it is okay, but that's about it. And I think the chaos marines from dark vengeance are a bit far off from loyal dark angels, really. Would very much ruin the aesthetics of the game for me - especially when playing against actual chaos marines.
