After reading the above article, am I correct in thinking that a Freebooter list can run anything?

Like I could have a Warboss on Bike and his retinue of Bad Ass Biker Nobs with units in Battlewagons and pretty much any units that I want from the dex?

I just keep getting told that Freebooter armies are the elite all Nob Armies only.

I like the freebooter background a lot and it fits in with my Space Pirate Ork Theme, but I just keep getting told that Freebooter armies are the elite all Nob Armies only.

Elite all nobz? What?

Freebooters are pretty much the "Whatever goes" catagory.

Heck half the time they are mostly ramshackled from whatever they've grabbed, but yet at the same time they'll have lots of Imperial and Xeno's loot as well as their own gear due to the money and equipment they've been given.

Some fluff sources (Rogue Trader, the RPG series) has them with some really random stuff, one group had dark eldar splinter weaponry (modified for themselves) even.

Bad Moons can ride bikes. Evil Suns can take Lootas. Snakebites can run Big Meks.

Its not what each faction *can* take, its what they *should* take.

Roight propa Freebootas would be at least mostly Nobs and Flash Gits.

Anybody playing a freeboota list should be required to put a pirate hat and eyepatch on their warboss and talk like Kaptin Bluddflagg.

This. Lootaz could easily be squeezed into that view too.
There's nothing wrong with taking a unit or two that are typically tied to other clans, as long as the bulk of your army is in the right place. That is, of course, only if you're THAT fussed about fluff - it's your army to do what you want with. You could get around it by just making sure everyone has appropriate conversions and paintjobs (lotz o' pirutt hatz!).

Except freeboota's has no real composition? I've seen them with plenty of things that would be quite odd.

Freebootaz have no composition. AFAIK, it's just a designation given to a group of orks that will work for anyone as long as the loot is good.

In the 2nd edition codex freebooters were just collections of orks who set off on their own much like pirates. The most famous of these were Kaptain Badrukk's Flashgitz.

They originally had nothing to do with being all nobs, they were orks who had left the mainstream clan system and set off on their own. I guess that means they can be whatever you want them to be!

The main change you'd see in a freeboota army is generally better kit as they can afford to buy better gear from the local mekboyz with their hard earned loot and punched out teef.

Not to mention different gear that orks wouldn't normally have, it's best to represent allies as Orks with fancy gear. (To represent the animosity for those of Desperate and Convenience, the others are jealous they got some fine gubbins. )

Well so far I have a general mish mash of units.

Nob Bikers, Battlewagon Boyz, Lootas, Dakkajets and a Big Mek in 1850. Basically my favourite units.

Their background is that they are a bunch of Intergalactic Bad Asses that are looking to prove themselves in war. Thing is their Warboss is a bit of a glory seeker, throwing himself and his boyz into unwinnable situations just to prove they can win.

During a siege on a Necron Tomb World, Warboss Torg, the leader of the Waaagh assaulted the Necron Vault head on and within a week, half of the Orks were dead and many more were captured. Torg raided the Vault again and again and when his Boyz were all but wiped out, Torg was captured.

He was brought before a mighty Tomb Lord who had subjected some of the most powerful Orks to horrific experiments where they were transformed into half Ork, half Necron constructs.

Torg managed to escape using his brute force and managed to rescue some of his krew. In single combat, he tore the Tomb Lord apart and with his Boyz, escaped on the back of their salvaged Warbikes.

Torg then travelled the Galaxy to recruit the best Bad Ass Orks he could find, raiding everything he set his eyes on getting ready for the Tomb Lord to resurrect so Torg could claim his vengeance.
