Hiya everybody. I have been playing goblins for a short while and have recently been toying around with "pure" NG lists now that we are over 2000+ in local tourneys and I can afford skarsnik for LD8. Previously to this I have been bringing a cheap common goblin warboss. I have considered breaking theme again to bring a bit more competitiveness, in the ways of an orc shaman lvl 1 or 2... or a common goblin BSB with spider banner...

I also realize artillery and pump wagons aren't "NG" but with NG crew, they are good enough for me.

I also didn't have 2 units of 20 archers previously, instead 1 unit of 40~ I'm not sure splitting them like this is the right choice anymore.

This is the current list (from memory as I forgot to save it to my phone last night)

lords: 748
Skarsnik (general)
NG Warboss GW, Wizard Hat (in skarsniks horde)
NG Warboss, Spear, LA, CHarmed Shield, Dragonbane Gem, Great Cave Squig
NG Great Shaman Lvl 4, Dispel scroll (roams with a posse of 20 archers)

heroes: 133
NG Big Boss GW, BSB, Standard of Discipline (considering swapping for common gobbo with poison banner) (skarsniks unit)
NG Big Boss GW, Ruby Ring (roams with small unit of 20 archers)

core: 752
50 NG HW full command nets (bus)
50 NG spears full command nets (horde)
42 NG bows full command (horde, skarsnik bsb and stupid wizard go here round them out to a 10x5)
22 NG Bows Musician
20 NG Bows Musician

special: 660
30 squigs/10 herders
15 squigs/5 herders (formation dependent on enemy, 5x4 normall, 6x3+extras for more attacks.. or could do 10x2 in front of skarsniks horde etc, and reform as necessary (to cover ground more quickly)
15 squigs/5 herders
5 squig hoppers
5 squig hoppers

Rare: 720
doom diver
doom diver
rock lobba
rock lobba
pump wagon outrigga spiky rolla
pump wagon spiky rolla
mangler squig
mangler squig
mangler squig
mangler squig

comes out to 3013 with me trying to memorize what everything costs point wise, so its a bit rough...

What do you guys think?

Do you think too many manglers? I could add another unit of 26/9 squigs and another of 11/4, and have probably 15-20 "space squigs' i could add in as latch diff reinforcements.

I have a 3rd rock lobba, and a 3rd doom diver I can use.

I have 3 spear chukkas as well.

I usually bring more lvl 1 NG shamans, but brought a level 4 to dispel.. Maybe a mistake.

Looking forward to C&C.

First off, I want to say this army looks like more fun than a barrel full of squigs! Good job on the theme build! I'm trying to do something similar with a 'pure' Orc army

Just to be clear, they only place where you are looking at breaking theme is with the BSB? I can't recall off the top of my head, but is the poison banner 'common' goblin only? If so I would just build the model as a NG and count him as a common goblin on paper. I feel that to be acceptable and I wouldn't think twice about it if someone did that in my gaming community.

Theme-wise and effectiveness-wise I want to say 'no, you can never have too many manglers', but it goes smell a bit of spam I might drop one or two and get some of those mentioned spear chukkas in there.

A question must be asked... Fanatics? I would understand if you didn't take any; as is it seem like with that many units on the table they could prove more harmful than good.

A buddy of mine plays NG w/ a big x40 block of archers which works pretty well. Smaller blocks just don't seem to really do enough damage on thier own IMHO.

I would have never thought of putting the wizard hat on a goblin boss, but I have to say I like the idea!

Thanks guys! yes it is quite a bit of fun

The spider banner is unfortunately common goblin only(ew), but myself would do exactly as you've said boss, I would just use my NG BSB anyways, and be like "dis is a common goblin yo. he just dressed to match cuz of the peer pressure"

Well I am considering adding an orc shaman as well for another direct damage spell. (but mainly hoping for hand of gork to move 1 of 4 manglers where I want it).. Another reason was to hand of gork NG units with fanatics 1" away and release them, but FAQ killed that...

Onto fanatics, well I have plenty, and just haven't had great exp with them. Smart players know how to get them out in the open quick, and in doing so can really mess up my first turn... Last time I had 3 pop out kill his unit that triggered them, but ended up blocking the direction I wanted to send my mangler.. I had to carefully choose which fanatic/mangler to move next to not have them run into one another and most likely kill eachother... I have considered adding some more back in though..

The wizard hat isn't optimal, but it's a "fun' item so I had to bring it. If I had points I would bring battle axe of the last waaagh on a squig boss as well. I mean, the game I got transformation of Kadon was awesome. I think I only got to play 1 turn.. Doom diver 1 shotted DoC nurgle DP, my squigs ate his drones, fanatics killed furies, and then I summoned a dragon from a block of goblins, we called it there and went to the bar, lol. Heck in some games I never get a spell off with the guy due to poor winds of magic etc. People do watch out for him/pick him out though when they know he's packing purple sun or dwellers.

Yes 4 manglers does seem a bit "much".. but I'm trying to have enough redudnancy that opponents are forced to shoot them leaving my squig boss, hoppers, and pump wagons free to rain terror down on my foes.

I feel like the 2 small blocks of archers is a mistake also, yeah need to revise them.

@ solosam47 I will post a picture here tonight, and link to my blog is in my sig. will post some more pix there tonight. Currently I can't fit this army on a single shelf, its taking 2 up so an army wide shot is difficult.. Will have to throw it all out on the table... Hopefully nobody hates on me for all the WIP-ness... I mean.. Its like 300+ models guys, and I'm trying to maintain a high quality standard!

Have you considered putting the crown of command, instead of the ruby ring, on the second NG Big boss? I don't know if skarsnik gives it but if you come up against a bus that is harder than you (which can be common fo NG) stubbon can make a big difference.

May your chest inspire the hopes and dreams of millions.
May your arm girth frighten the elderly, slow moving adults and very small children.
May your gains be plentiful.
Go forth and LIFT.

I hadn't considered that. I thought of putting it on the squig boss giving him and the hoppers LD7 stubborn, or keeping them within 12" of general and letting them use inspiring presence.

I do like the idea though. Previously i had another boss in that block with the mask of terror (to prevent unlucky terror check if charged by something causing it)... The stubborn hat might make a bigger difference though. Thanks for that idea!

Brentyboi, tried out the crown and man... Thanks for the suggestion. It certainly has a lot of uses! 20 gobbos held up 70 slaves 2 assassins and the bell/greyseer for 4 turns while manglers moved through them. worked great.

So have played 10 test games or so and switched list up 5 or 20 times, so here is the current incarnation! Tournament is this sunday!!! SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!!!

Lords 467/750

Gobbo general, LA, enchanted shield
NG warboss GCS dragonhelm potion of speed, spear, shield, light armor

goblin chariot
goblin chariot

Rare 595/750

Doom Diver
Doom Diver
Rock Lobba
Rock Lobba
Mangler Squig x 3
Pump Wagon spik rolla outrigga

my thoughts at first... I don't like not having a lvl 3/4 for dispel purposes... The power stone may go to waste if I don't get enough decent. Skarsniks prodda and ruby ring aren't reason enough for it.

the crown of command is working out very well for me. another boss thrown in to absorb challenges might not be a bad idea. If I drop a chariot, and power stone, I could pick up 2 bosses with GW? I could even bump him up to a lord instead, and have about 40 points left over? enough to add 1 more boss w/ gw and a 5 point magic item/upgrade somewhere

Finding room for a wizard hat would be pretty excellent as well because, it's just too much fun to me. 161 for that I think?

So did some more revising.... I caved and dug up the wizard hat boss as he's more fun that the boss on squig. also added orc shaman

lords

Goblin warboss charmed shield dragonbane gem, LA (general)
skarsnik
NG warboss GW wizard hat
Savage orc great shaman dispel scroll (level 3)

heroes:

NG big boss BSB shield LA +1 LD banner
NG Shaman lvl 1 power stone, ironcurse
NG shaman lvl 1 ruby ring of ruin
NG shaman lvl 1scroll of shielding, obsidian amulet (MR2)
NG big boss crown of command, shield, LA
NG big boss gw
NG big boss GW

core:
20 NG bows (general/bsb bunker)
41 NG bows nets FC - 1 fanatic (skarsnik, crown of command, MR2 shaman, and 1 vanilla boss go here)
48 NG HW nets FC (1 ng shamn 1 gw boss here)
67 NG spears nets FC (1 ng sham, 1 orc sham, 1 wiz hat boss here)

special:

squig herd 30/10
squig herd 14/6

rare:
doom diver x 2
rock lobba x 2
mangler squig x 3
pump wago, squiggy rolla, outriggas
pump wagon, spiky rolla

So I dropped 2 units of hoppers, 1 herd and the squig boss.. and picked up a bit more...

I also included a lone fanatic so I can honestly answer "yeah i have some" when they ask if I have fanatics. hehehe. Usually set down a baggy full of 20 of them on table just to mess with people.

I included more bosses in hopes of accepting challenges with them to prevent skarsnik, crown of command, wiz hat, etc being challenged and killed.

any added dps they do is great as well. skarsniks unit will have 4 characters in it which worries me for sword of anti heroes. eh..

I realize wiz hat isn't optimal but...

way i see it is...

I have a lvl 3 big waag, 3 lvl 1 lil waaghs anda lvl 2 random lore + ruby ring and skarsniks prodda... I should be able to get 2-4 direct damage spells if I roll decently. between those, sneaky stealin, and hopefully foot/hand.... hoping to have a good grip on magic phase. I realize with 5 channels on a 6+ and only a lvl 3 I wont be king of it... but scroll of shielding, dispel scroll, and power stone I hoped would help. I considered bringing forbidden rod as well.

I know skarsnik is for the theme, but i keep looking at this guy, how do you like him? I can't decide if I like his rules for his points.

I've been enjoying the idea of him with NG archer blocks to take advantage of the hit and run style rules.

He is a lot of points. I wouldn't recommend bringing him in an army of less than 3k points. Maybe 2500.

His prodda is nice, the S6 D6 bound spell with only needing a 5 to cast. Having killing blow is nice on gobbla but never actually had it happen for me.

In my 3 tourney games, he blasted chariots and fast cav apart with his prodda, killed a doom wheel, and killed a 400~ point vampire lord. Vamp was a close one. Put 4 wounds on me before I could swing back. Luckily he only had a single wound left and skarsnik finished him off.

I actually have only used the flee ability one time ever with him. Usually forget it exists honestly.

My biggest reason for taking him is his ability to put units in reserve Have had several games happen where 80 man plaguebearers (or something similiar) with epidemus are held in reserve, then walk on, to never get into the fray of the game. especially on battle for the pass, and meeting engagement when they are areadly putting stuff in reserve on a roll of 1. So this way a roll of 1 or 6 puts them in reserve.

I love his reserve rule, had a dwarf player who had two cannons which had to walk on the board. I just haven't decided if he was worth his hefty point premium. On a character with no ward and only a 6+ armor

Yeah he is a bullet magnet. People "gun" for him knowing he is an easy kill and worth alot. You can use that to your advantage though. You can almost bet people will target his unit, so don't put your high level mage or general/bsb in same unit. I typically have been running him in a unit of 41 goblins with FC/nets/bows.. skarsnik rounds them out to a footprint of 47 models. I then add a NG big boss with shield/la and crown of command to make the block stubborn, and add either a vanilla boss with GW to accept challenges after unit champion, and a lvl 1 shaman with MR2 amulet + scroll of shielding.

That way at least when skarsniks unit gets hit by a bad spell that actually causes hits (minority of spells of course) they have a 5+ ward against it naturally with MR2... then if you pop scroll of shielding that becomes a 2+ ward vs. that spell... I popped mine too early in my 3rd game of tourney. I only saved 3/7 wounds on a 4+ on a unit that didn't have MR. I forgot to dispel it (curse of years) and next turn it did like 17 wounds, and 20 more the next round...should of used it 2nd or 3rd round for a 4+ vs 17-20 wounds.... but if someone tries to brain bursta, snipe with a spell etc skarsnik just pop that scroll for a 2+ ward and save his booty. of course this doesn't help if he is hitting you with puple sun, pit of shades, dwellers etc. but nothing really does

I also usually deploy a unit of squigs to a flank of his unit, to flank charge whatever does make it to his unit.

Making artillery walk on is pretty nice. His prodda's bound spell is pretty nifty for added thump once dispel pool is empty (or to drain the dispel pool)

@ 3000 in tourney my Direct damage/magic missle output was like this

between 3 lvl 1 shamans I got vind glar each game
I also had a ruby ring
Skarsniks prodda
then the lvl 3 sham will have foot, or GOM/brainbusta etc at least 1 DD
then lvl 2 wiz hat will usually take a DD/MM if he has option to take one from rolling doubles/not so useful spells with a DD/MM as lore standard.

so 3-4 DD/MM a turn, not game breaking or anything, but a little bit of punch when ya need it. Can't tell you how many times a player has had a small dispel pool and let vind glare, prodda, or ruby ring go through to save dice, and me generate enough hits to break a unit or kill it.

That is a cool list, I would love to run a pure Clan Pestilence army against it one day.... if only I didn't hate painting plague monks.

I'm a bit of a noob, and don't know what a pure clan pestilence army is but if you ever make it up to OKC send me a PM and we can do it!

this was a fun to list to play! only got to play it in tourney against 1 skaven player who had a single block of plague monks, and that was my only experience against them at all. didn't realize they had frenzy and didn't plan accordingly!
