I'm starting a mechanized ork army and I'm going to be making most of my own vehicles, killa cans artillery and such. Here's my first project almost done:

will post pics soon

I have less of an issue making out the clear plastic than I do with the pictures being sideways. Might want to sort that out before posting the next lot.

Not to mention; why do I need a picture of two birds and a deodorant stick in the background? And why put a model on a newspaper that actually makes it harder to distinguish the model?

Ok, I already said they were bad pictures as I took them on my cell phone but when it's actually done I will get GOOD pictures but you guys are just being trolls right now. Read the description before you complain.

No, we are not trolling.

We are addressing how it would have been a lot easier, even possible, to comment had you changed the composition and orientation of the pictures.
We are not worried that the pictures are slightly blurry shots from a cell phone. That is quite OK for WIP pictures.

But it wouldn't kill you to prop up a piece of white paper on and behind the model and use two seconds to turn the pictures right way up.
I mean, don't you look at the pictures before uploading and ask yourself; "Will people be able to tell what is actually in the picture?"?

You might think; "I really need to show this to Dakka, like RIGHT NOW!", but we can wait. Trust me, we can even wait until tomorrow when you can take the picture outside in natural light.

Your actual model might deserve a lot of praise and enthusiastic comments, but your pictures got exactly the comments they deserved.

Yeah, I'm sorry about that I actually didn't know they were sideways, they just showed up like that when I posted them but the next ones won't be.

You can flip them in the folders on your computer before uploading, that way they will upload the right way. You can even flip them on the camera/phone memory if your taking them off straight

Nobody should ever upload straight off of their phone.

I will have these painted up soon and I will be attempting to scratch build a dakkajet ( bi-plane style), a trukk, 3 killa cans, an orky defence line and a bastion soon.

will also be getting some boyz soon and scratch bulding a big trakk with supa cannon and a bunch of trukks.

The plan is to make some big trakks/battlewagons, trukks and meganobz all from scratch but does anyone have any requests or suggestions... Or challenges of what they would like to see me scratchbuild?

Kudos to you for giving scratch building a go, but I must say I would refuse to play against any of these. I'm sorry but they are just too.... amateur.

Keep practising though and keep collecting lots of little bits of "junk" from all sorts of old/spare electronics or machines etc. Would like to see less cereal boxes and toilet roll tubes and more interesting salvage.

My only gripes are you have no trouble distinguishing what you used to make them. Some spackle could go a long way, here. Also, you need like seven billion more rivits.

How do your looted vehicles scale compared to GW? Playing against this, I would worry that you modeled to your disadvantage by having super-heavy sized vehicles with 10 armor all around.

Some nice use of pre-existing vehicles. But I have to agree with Jaxnfury, The problem mainly lies in the matterials you have used. The cardboard is not a great material to use. Even when re-enforced it generally will bend under any pressure and transporting these models will very quickly wear and stress them.

You asked for some suggestions/challenges, so these are mine

I would like to see your next scratch build involve plasticard over cardboard - its a more rigid material but gives you a much stronger model and can be made to most shapes.

I would like to see more detail added to your models - Add rivets, extra plates with varying thickness.

Have a look at this guys blog : http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/blog/426770.page
Plenty of inspiration here

Keep up the work! can only improve

Personally, I like the scratchbuilt style. I think it looks fabulously ghetto and true to the orks.

I'd love to see what these look like painted, keep it going!

Thanks, a lot! I was really going for the ramshackle ghetto style and I think it really works for orks. I should have some painted up soon. I also have another rokkit buggie to post pics of and I'm going to make some meganobz and 2 trukks soon.

Scotland.

They look ok for a scratchbuilt model, but I have to agree with JaxnFury.

Why? and what do you expect? it's scratch built, the whole point of this thread is making the best models without using any GW kits...

If your learning to scratch build thats one thing to take into consideration.. But a scratch build doesn't have to have gw parts on it, but it does need to look like the model and be roughly the same size as the model.. If your scratch built model is twice the size, then you are going to have problems playing against experienced people, unless its against a friend and he don't care.. I do a lot of scratch building for my ork army, plus the plasticard is way cheaper than dropping 45-70 a model, for when I can build it for less than $10.. You also have to take in consideration the Rule of Cool will trump over all the rules.. If it is truly awesome, your opponent will likely not care seeing how impressed he is with the model.. Keep scratch building and honing your skills at it and don't give up..

Thanks man, will do and don't worry I made sure they were actually the right sizes, its hard to tell in the photos. Although I just play with my friends anyway so it doesn't matter, we used to do things like proxy chaos cultists as kroot, chimera's as basilisks or my personal favourite: A hellbrute as a drop pod so the scratchbuilds are a step up for us.

I really like the aesthetics on the biplane. Enough that I might try to make a similar one, although I have about five ork projects in line before it. I'm also amused by all the looted Eldar weapons. If you haven't already, I'd recommend giving them some backstory about how they krumped the panzees and took all their good kit. Maybe decorate with some spare panzee heads if you have any lying around.

That said, I have to agree with the people advising you to avoid cardboard. It is going to bend, tear, crease, and generally get banged up badly. Plasticard is by far a better construction material. It's fairly inexpensive and can be found in some game stores and most model train hobby shops. It's a bit more expensive (given that the cardboard is basically free) but your models will have a much longer lifespan.

Also, is that hot glue that I'm seeing all over the place? In places it looks like cobwebs, and in places it looks like someone just...enjoyed himself all over the model. Superglue is a much better choice.

Yes, it is hot glue LOL and I'm not going to argue with anyone over how that looks, I mainly just use it out of convenience, I will have to clean up all the flash before I paint them. You're all right cardboard is not the best material but as of right now I won't be needing to take them far anyway so they should be Ok.
