Ok after getting the 6 riptides at 225 pts (with options) , then ill get 2 groups of 10 fire warriors , then one cadre fireblade , with 2 groups of pathfinders an aegis with a Icarus lascannon and to top it off a hammerhead, sounds like a beefy list now that i think about it

eh...sounds crazy. Lol. Everything that is wrong with SFO, right here folks!
Seriously though, it would be hilarious to see a unit of guardsman cause two wounds with their Power axes and run down the Riptide. and it could easily happen is the sad part. Probably better this way though.
But 2 is what I use right now, to answer the original question. Two seems to be more than enough.

How often do you see Guardsmen with power axes? How often do you see Guardsmen with power axes make it into assault? Power Blobs died pretty hard when 6e hit. And they're even worse against Tau. They get stripped of their paltry cover save and gunned down like dogs. Hell, even if you do make it into charge range you're eating a hell load of overwatch. Then you have to survive some attacks at I2, then you have to hit and wound. Pretty tall order. But your right in the respect that it would be hilarious to see. If those little fethers made it, I'd cheer for 'em.
Riptides are great. They were made to be very competitive because they want to sell that awesome looking model. Most people find room to put at least one in at any points level save 500 and more often than not they take two to three when points allow.

At 2k I take 2. I think taking more than 2 below 2k points means you will be losing out on taking other units such a Crisis and Stealths in the 3rd elite slot (ALthough the crisis requirement can be filled my the more expensive bodyguards and commander). Riptides are awesome but they only fill so many roles. Take 2 Tides then some Crisis with TLFB+FB so your Tides can concentrate on what they do best without having to worry about tank busting.
...Although you will miss the look on your opponents face when you tell them your running a Triptide list.
Does anyone know if a commander has to roll with his bodyguards? or can he leave the squad?

From my reading of the codex, the bodyguard is a different unit that the commander can join.

You sir would be in an entirely different 40K world than I am. Power Axe's are the thing todo in blobs. I dont know what you mean by "they took a hit in 6E" since they didn't exist til then but um...
To answer your question, every blob I see has Power axes. Generally 4 of them. And they are great because one dude is in a challenge while the other three chuck 9 Power axe attacks into their attacker. Which is boss. 12 if they charge! More boss.
So All I can say is, I haven't seen an IG player yet that played with anything but Power axes on each sergeant, assuming they planned on blobbing them. Makes sense.

Also with the blob allied in SM characters, either librarians hoping for forewarning 4 plus invul psyhic power or Azreal with constant 4 plus invul psyhic power, thats how I would run mine elimanates the need for static aegis defence line then

Do you play in the US? Blobs led by SM characters are EVERYWHERE. Did you see Tony Kopach's Adepticon/ NOVA list? Both had large blob squads that essentially only had Axes as their upgrades. Gonyo uses this as well, same with Hulksmash and Mike Brandt. Lots of players use Powerblobs, they are much better in 6th, IMO, due to challenges/allies and the change to an infantry meta.
