Bloodthirsters are awesome for destroying anything so I would definitely recommend getting one. A lot of people say tzeench daemon princes with mastery level three and wings are good but I have no experience with them so can't help much there. Plague bearers are good for holding objectives. Plague drones are fast, tough and can be upgraded to have poisoned (3+) weapons which glance vehicles on a 6+ so are good against anything with a high toughness. Soul grinders are awesome too (give them phlegm to drop pie plates) and bring some AA to your army.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I am no expert but I have noticed that 4 heralds are used for their abilty as a force multiplier. Soulgrinders are most popular heavy support since they come with a skyfire cannon. I am not sure about troops, although plague marines n noise are great for csm, I am not sure if plague bearers and daemonetts are the best choices. If I had to pick which troop I would mass, it would be the pink horrors since they are shooty.

I've just started playing daemons too and they look like lots of fun to play.
My main issue is the HQ slot is so crowded, and for me its a real struggle to pick. You definitely want heralds, they are just amazing army multipliers for their cost. Then that leaves a single HQ slot for either:
Bloodthirster: Just awesome
GUO: Mastery level 3 and biomancy and will just never die
Fateweaver: Great army buffer with spells, also a single re-roll per tern is to good to pass up with grimoire etc
LOC: Take mastery level 3 and divination and becomes a great cc and shooty FMC
For me its real hard to choose and I guess it depends how you want to theme the rest of your army. Also flesh hounds are pretty good, as well as seekers.
Anyway thats what I kind of noticed so far but a more experienced player will be more helpful

I think the best thing to do is decide what style of army you want to play first. There are so many ways to play a daemon army. I've gone for the Khornate flying circus route and my list looks like this;
2x bloodthirsters with 2 greater and 1 lesser reward each
2x 15 bloodletters with blood reaper, lesser reward (for AP2 weapon) and instrument (these guys deep strike)
20 plague bearers (for objective campling) with instrument
2x daemon prince with wings, armour and 2 greater + 1 lesser reward each
soul grinder with phlegm (for pie plates and AA)
My army is mostly fast and in my opponents face very quickly for a turn 2 charge with 4 monstrous creatures. I have a little bit of high strength fire support to soften up a target before my flying MCs land and a hard to kill unit for sitting on an objective or tarpitting something.
This list is hit and miss though. It either tables my opponent by turn 4 or I get tabled by turn 5.

Daemons are really strong now. Most people get blinded by the treats they could get from their gods and then get dissapointed when they dont get it. Think of it like this instead, you get khorne Axes and eatherblades and all those nice things for less cost than marines would and sometimes you get something even better!
It can also be a benefit in a tournament to be able to "select" ne gear dependent on what you face.
I have started to run a slaanesh/khorne list. Lots of Heralds and large sized troops with kitted troopleaders. MCs costs much but are great, except against GK, keep a SG for them
Automatically Appended Next Post: With instruments the storm table make more damage to the enemy than me since my khorne cover my slaanesh and vice versa. But it isnt really that painfull to Any side I think

Daemons are great fun and a very unique army. They've change *a lot* with this recent codex so now is a great time to get started.
First and foremost, Daemons are a melee army (one of the few remaining). They also have a choice of either lots of Monstrous Creatures or going full horde mode with basic troops costing less than 10 points each. You *can* do ranged stuff but Pink Horrors are really unreliable due to all of the problems with psychic shooting attacks.
Some possible units to consider
1. A 20 strong unit of Seekers. Seekers are insanely fast (12inch movement with D6+6 run) so they will assaulting most opponents on turn 2. They have a lot of attacks and rending so they can mulch through big units like Guard blobs as well as tough units like Tactical Squads and Terminators. Add in the fact that the unit champion can take a cheap AP2 weapon and these guys are very good. Unfortunately they die in droves to shooting but they cost so little and are so fast that it almost doesn't matter.
2. A 9 strong unit of Screamers. Screamers don't put out nearly the same damage per point as Seekers but they have a better save (4++ from Turbo Boosting), can make flyover attacks to harass the enemy, and can provide some AP2 or Armorbane attacks in a pinch. Not the *most* competitive unit, but lots of fun and you already have three models.
3. A big blob of Daemonettes or Bloodletters. Daemonettes are faster, have more attacks, and can threaten Terminators but Bloodletters will absolutely ruin Tactical Marines. Daemonettes are probably better but the Letter models are so nice that I'd say they are a fine option.
4. A Greater Daemon! Not many other armies get MCs like we do, so make the most of them! The Lord of Change and Bloodthirster are probably the most competitive choices but Fateweaver, Great Unclean One, and Skarbrand are all solid. These make great army centerpieces and are lots of fun. If you really like MCs then grab a Daemon Prince too and use him in the Heavy Support slot.
5. Heralds. Heralds make your units better are pretty low costs. For 70 or so points you can get a character that seriously increases the damage output of your Seekers and is a monster in challenges. There is some risk with putting Heralds in our units since they add another 25-40% of the unit's cost without increasing their survivability but they make your unit a force to be reckoned with.
6. Soulgrinders! One of the only ranged options in the codex, they got a sizable buff in this codex. They are our only real Anti-Air and long ranged support.
7. Allies! We can ally into CSM and Guard easily. This means you can grab Vendettas, Heldrakes, Obliterators, and Cultists to fill out our armies.
