Hey guys, I'm going to be purchasing a new computer in a few weeks and I could use some help looking for a new MMO to play. The last one I played was Runescape(many years ago!)
I dont know much about WoW but apparently thats pretty popular but its also pay to play, which isnt a huge problem, but if there's a great game out there for free I'd be more open to try that! Can anyone give any suggestions of a great MMO?

If you don't mind at least spending $5 Star Wars is actually not to bad. If you spend at least $5 in the store you get Preferred status, which is far better than the f2p status, and once you get it you have from that point on. There are some nice things you can get at the store as well. It is generally newbie friendly and has a story so that helps. If you are thinking about it I can suggest some items that make life easier.
Guild Wars 2 is a good option, but I found it wore kind of thin after a bit.

Are you looking for a fantasy setting or a sci-fi one? There are actually less subscription based MMOs out there now than free 2 play (F2P) ones. I'll give you a brief run-down of what is out there.
World of Warcraft - sure its the most popular but its graphics are cartoony and dated and you need all of the xpacs to do end game content (subscription)
Star Wars the Old Republic - very much like WoW in space but Star Wars. i found this game to be a pretty easy play, with a companion it is pretty easy solo leveling to 50 in a decent amount of time. Each class on both sides has their own unique story which is cool but planet stories and sidequests are all the same. if you have no interest in pvp or end game this is a pretty good game it has over 200 hours of voice acting. (subscription and cash shop)
Eve Online - the super space sandbox game. this is hands down the hardest MMO to get into, the learning curve is steep and brutal but very worth it. Expect to invest lots of time in the game. (subscription but possible to play for free via in game methoods)
Terra Online - fantasy action MMO. i found this to be more fun than WoW or SWTOR gameplay wise as you are not pressing a ton of keys to play your character. You can create custom skill chain combos that only require a single button press to activate. (cash shop)
The Secret World - modern horror MMO. the setting reminds me of Silent Hill meets Left 4 Dead and the character building is like Guild Wars 1. (one time purchase and then free afterwards, also has cash shop)
World of Tanks - action shooter MMO. it is really all in the title, its tank vs tank shooting matches. 6 nations worth of tanks, 5 different tank types. Shermans, Panthers, Panzers, Tigers, Pershings, Pattons, Maus and MORE! More accounts than WoW by a landslide. (cash shop but there are also loads of free events)
Planetside 2 - the FPS MMO. its like Battlefield the MMO. Choose your race and your class and take the dropship straight into battle with hundreds if not thousands of other players on a SINGLE map. (cash shop)
there are plenty more free MMOs out there like Aion or Lineage 2 but these i think are some of the most popular out there right now.
if you have any questions i have played all of these games except the Secret World.

If you are looking for a good F2P MMO then there are 4 decent candidates in my opinion.
Star Trek Online- A decent mix of space and ground combat but the end game is quite stale.
World of Tanks - basically an MMOFPS but tactical and well made, some balance issues but well worth playing.
Lord of the RIngs Online - In my opinion the best 'tradtitional' MMO on the market but its quite an old game now so the player base is declining
Neverwinter - just entered open beta the other day but so far it looks to be a well made game.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.
-Leman Russ, Meditations on Imperial Command book XVI (AKA the RT era White Dwarf Commpendium).
Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Palindrome... World of Tanks isn't an MMO. It may be advertised as one, but it isn't. Cause otherwise every game with an online progression system would be an MMO. It's also not an RPG.
But yeah, kinda need some more info on what you're looking for.
Sci-fi/fantasy?
Active combat system or just auto attacking and spamming hotkeys every 10 seconds?
Focus on story or PVP?

Uh, not really.
LoL, isn't by any stretch of the imagination, a MMO. I wouldn't consider WOT one either.
Guildwars clearly is a MMO though.

Yeah, if LoL is an MMO so is Warcraft 3, starcraft and every game with online multiplayer ever.

I can only back this up 1000%. I have actually played it. I was expecting another bland MMO that would only hold my attention for a month or two and be a waste of cash. How wrong I was. The combat is very action based and based on weapon class NOT the class you choose in creation, though the class you choose does affect what weapons/armour you can use.
I havn't played much of the content but there is alot of it.
Enjoy exploring maps? There is Points of Interests and Vista locations to hunt in each section. There are also various jumping puzzles to be found and completed. Some are brutally hard and some are pretty simple.
Enjoy crafting? Crafting can help you level in GW2. The recipes are not a case of get level Y then buy recipe X. Some can only be found via discovery which gives a nice xp boost aswell.
Enjoy combat? Theres a load of different enemies each with their own unique traits. The enemy variety is good but you will quickly run into high level variants of low level enemies.
Enjoy story? During character creation there is a choice that affects your personal story, this basically get a basic story on the go until you get more in depth with various factions. Also there is some choice to be made at certain parts, I had to choose between a friend and somebody of importance to save.
Enjoy PvP? I can't say how accurate this will be as I hav't played PvP, but World vs World is pretty much a massive game of domination. Capture and defend points. IIRC whoever is winning in WvW it gives bonuses for their server.
Also it has the added bonus of pay once and thats it, no monthly fees. There is however a cash shop option aswell, all convenience/style items should you wish to spend a little more.
Honestly I cannot recommend Guild Wars 2 enough. I'm still playing it 5 months after I purchased it. It more than I can say for SWTOR or Rift.
EDIT: There is alot more to be said for Guild Wars 2 but I would be typing all day XD

Give me a precise, universally acknowledged, definition of an MMO.
