Swift Swooping Hawk

Finally received my new Minitaire paints. With that and my new thinning mix I got to work on my Mymeara Eldar. I am working on a test model first after that I will move onto batch painting.
Aside from this first Wave Serpent the plog will feature:
2 More Wave Serpents
2 Warp Hunters/Fire Prism/Night Spinners
1 old Falcon/ FW NightSpinner
3 Hornets
1 Phoenix Bomber
and loads of infantry.
Wave Serpent primed with White Vallejo Surface Primer
Basecoat with Trollhide from Minitaire
Second color is Vallejo Game Color Foul Green
Third Color is Minitaire Snow White
The pilot is almost done, still needs the purple ghost tint to simulate glow from the screen and gloss varnish on the goggles for the perfect reflection effect.
Next step is finishing up the weapons and gems. To be continued...

Got some more work done on the Wave Serpent.
Stone and oil lining done. Oil lining works really well. Glad to have picked up that trick.
Tried using a Minitaire Purple Ghost Tint to reflect the light of the screen on the pilot himself. Looks allright but a tad too dark for my taste. Will try something lighter on the next pilot.
Still need to Matt Varnish the whole thing
Overall look

Got my hands on an Eldar Aegis Defense Line and I immediately saw the finished product in my head.
I am going for a pure white with transparant blue forcefield aura, going to gloss varnish at the end to give a pearly surface look to it.
The pictures are at the 2nd stage. Snow White basecoat is done with a Plasma fluid ghost tint. Next step will be the inside of the defense line, gloss, oil lining, gloss and done.
Close up
With communication's array (basecoated only)

Great Craftworld choice, it's certainly one of the more interesting and rarely seen schemes. Looks like you're off to a good start. One thing I'd suggest is maybe making your colours slightly darker in places for greater contrast between the turquoise and jade.

Finished the first varnish and the quad gun + comm array for my Aegis Line
And here is my almost finished Wraithlord
Still have the ghost tint to put on the weapons and the sword.
The tabard is not quite done yet and will likely need some greenstuff in order to fix it decently. Basing is not done obviously, still not quite sure what kind of basing I will do.
Maybe a snow base with an IG cut in two at the waist with blood splatter.

What is the Oil Lining technique? I've never heard of it before. It is a way to line between the armor plates on the Wave Serpent?
And I like the look of your Eldar, but they look a little flat. There's no depth to the colors. Front to back, there's white, then a transition to light blue, then a transition to light green. There's no depth to the blue or the green. There is no shading or highlighting to give that sense of depth to the surfaces. For example, the top part of the Wave Serpent hull is all the same shade of green, while the Scorpion helmets have a lighter area on the top towards the front, and a darker area lower on the sides. That area of the Wave Serpent has a lot of different angles and surfaces that will reflect light differently, so they all look flat when they're the same color. You have done a great job with the transitions between the colors, but the hull is a bit long for only 3 colors, so maybe you can look at adding another color at the rear of the hull, above the intake, and transition into the green from there. Another idea might be to bring the blue further back, and widen the blended area, so that you don't have such a large area of the green.

As someone who does not particularly like the eldar aesthetics, I am glad I clicked on this thread.
I love the airbrush work you have done. While I don't feel like I can offer advice, but keep up the great work!

I fully agree with you. It looks nice but depth is missing. This was my first test model and I will try to make it better on the next Wave Serpent and the Fire Prism that will follow. Perhaps add in a darker blue and a darker green in all the depressions on the hull like a darker blue on the side of the cockpit.
Oil lining is the technique I used to paint the inside of the lines on the wave serpent. Technique works very well for all similar patterns such as Tau or Dark Eldar. I first learned the technique on a dark Eldar Hellion board and it pretty well.
1- Uour model must be finished first. All the acrylics/washes/highlights must be finished.
2- Seal the model with some gloss varnish.
3- Make a dry palette and put a little bit of oil paint on it (about the size of dime/nickel won't need more than that). I use the small Van Gogh tubes which are like $6 for 40ml and it will last you possiblity a lifetime since you use such a small quantity each time.
4- Put some oil thinner (I use Taltine) on your brush and start thinning a small part of your paint. Re-dip your bursh and re-thin until you get the desired color.
5- Then very carefully you dip your brush into the mix and gently press down into the line. This will release the oil mix into the line and almost magically the lines will start filling themselves with little to no effort.
The advantage of this technique over trying to actually paint the inside of the line is that the risks of paint spilling over the sides and affecting the overall finish are next to none.
If oil paint spills, no biggie just dip your brush in thinner and clean it up with a towel the gloss varnish will protect your acrylic against the thinner so 0 damage to the model undernearth.

What's the dry time on that lining?
|
The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Been a while since I used that technique. Personally I usually let it sit overnight. Actual dry time might depend on how much paint and how big the lines are. For exemple the lines in a Tau battlesuit vs the lines in a wave serpent.
Waver serpent's lines are wide and deeper.
You could probably get away with an hour or so for Tau
