Low points tournament (1200) book missions, what armies do the best at low points??? I'm thinking guard or orcs because of the number of cheap troops.

My Tau friend excels at low point games. While others are hindered, he can still reliably pound out high damage guns, and has fewer targets to focus his fire on.

I'm personally a fan of Deathwing in low points, because the army's biggest disadvantage is much less important when neither army is especially large.
1200 points gets you Belial, 20 terminators, four cyclone missile launchers, and six sets of TH/SS
|
The Seraphs of Thunder: a homebrew, almost entirely converted successor Deathwing. And also some Orks. And whatever else I have lying around. |

Da boyz won't do you wrong in smaller games mate, just swamp 'em in a Green tide. You can easily get 100+ boys on the field at this points value, a KFF Mek and a kitted out boss (Ghaz might be worth it), and maybe a few outflanking solo deffkoptas to deal with heavy artillery at the back of the field.
Green Tide sucks for larger games though, more because of the hassle of moving 180 boys to the game and around the board than any actual weakness in the army itself.

Grey Knights.
Coteaz 3 PC servitors a monkey or 2.
I also use purg squads w/ a Tech Marine w Conv beamer. Works really well put it way in the back. Give the Squad 1 to 2 Flamer and 1 Psy Cannon. Don't need LoS.
You get ignores cover and it is all she wrote.
Edit add:
I Murder at low points w/ Tyranids. A Tervigone troop choice.
Doom and 3 Zoans w/ 3 Guard.
A couple of Biovores and a Flyrant.
Very Nasty.

HQ
Ghazghull
Big Mek, KFF, Cybork, Burna
Troops
30 Shoota Boyz, 3 Big Shootas, 1 Nob w/ Bosspole & one of the Big Shootas [x2]
30 Slugga Boyz, 3 Rokkit Launchaz, 1 Nob w/ Bosspole, Eavy Armour, & one of the Rokkits
90 of the most cost efficient troops in the game, with cover saves and heavy weapons, and one of the ded fightiest characters around.
The Nobs give precision shots, bosspole leadership, and eat challenges for Ghaz so he can stomp other stuff. Big Mek gives 5+ cover saves plus burna shenanigans. Ghaz kills pretty much anything he can get his hands on. Boys dakka dakka dakka WAAAGH DA ORKS
With Mork's help you'll get a little night fighting as well.
Edit: My bad, thats only 1000 points. You've got another 200 to play around with. The PK Nobs might be worthwhile in that case, or you could grab a Dakkajet or Deff Koptas. Or an Aegis + Gun + Lobbas + Ammo Runts

We've been doing 1000 point games lately.
Orks are probably the scariest.
Orks, Tau, Nids and Coteaz spam (not sure on what exactly he takes) have been doing well.
My DE have been doing well also just with venom spam. I managed to barely beat the Orks in a game that seemed to have luck on my side. He'd most likely beat me in a rematch.
Nids are very scary with their MC (similar to the Eldarzilla low point armies), but DE is such a hard counter to them, I'm not sure I'd run them in a tourney.
I think Orks are the best bet and they are a fun army to have on either side of the board.

We just hosted an 70+ player tournament with some restrictions(200 or less points values for HQ and single units) at 1000 points.
The 'stronger' lists were:
Tervi-spam lists with 4 of them and Doom
Grey Knight lists of a couple varieties
Necron Flyer Shenanigans
Some of the lists that people thought would do well but didn't:
DA Deathwing
Orks in general
|
Farseer Faenyin
7,100 pts Yme-Loc Eldar(Apoc Included) / 5,700 pts (Non-Apoc)

Eldar: 0-0-0 (Yes, I feel it is that bad)
Battlefleet Gothic: 2,750 pts of Craftworld Eldar
X-wing(Focusing on Imperials): CR90, 6 TIE Fighters, 4 TIE Interceptors, TIE Bomber, TIE Advanced, 4 X-wings, 3 A-wings, 3 B-wings, Y-wing, Z-95

Interesting.....I can see GK lists with lots of henchmen, but I don't see how you can have a good list with just GK's....

1500 points is considered a 'medium' game and 2000 a large one.
I personally like smaller games of 1000 or less. Keeps the skirmish feel

Necrons with MSU can be nasty at lower points. Multiple fliers are hard to deal with at low levels, and a couple squads of immortals in scythes plus a destroyer lord with triarchs or wraiths are nasty. I faced a doom scythe, d lord, triarchs and five warriors in a 600 point mini tourney and was crushed right quick.

And what sort of lists would people be inclined to use in a 1000 point tournament, I have a doubles one in June! I might use it to start a new army

Sisters of Battle! Because the look on people's faces when one standard kitted unit fires 40 bolter rounds, rerolling 1's to hit is priceless. I call it the "I'm gonna need more dice." People in tourneys have often never faced a Sisters army before.
I wouldn't expect to win, though. After all, bolters can't kill your enemy's cool models.

Well, in small pt games you need numbers. But one or two tougher units/MCs would definitely help.
For instance, CSM with 2 Helldrakes would be rather hard to counter.
