You need a whole mess of MC when dealing with Necrons, they are they only reliable way to punch through their Quantum Shielding without trying spamming Hive Guard or HVC. Devilgants can easily out-shoot Necron Warriors but need cover or will die in droves. Indeed cover is your best friend when using Tyranids, as most of your units have very poor armour saves. Your FMC will be very damaging against flyer spam, as a Hive Tyrant has a very good chance of taking down Necron flyers with vector striking.

Fun thing for tyranid's against necrons? You have no vehicles, so his glancing guns are useless.
Bad thing's for tyranid's against necrons? Mindshackle scarabs will mean in most cases, your monstrous creatures will kill themselves, not necrons.
So in short, Spam gribblies, rather than monstrous creatures when possible.

You shouldn't be using HVC's for anti tank. They're terrible. 2. You should be using lots of Hive Guard against Necrons for this very reason. AV 13 is the Hive Guard niche. A brood has enough shots to reliably get through and damage or destroy the vehicle (especially now with hull points). Like, really, if there's any army your should be spamming Hive Guard against in 6th, it's Necrons. Av 10-12 are better dealt with via Brainleech Devourers, and AV14 via good old Smashing or, if you're going oldschool, Zoanthrope Warp Lances. AV13 is really the only reason to take Hive Guard, and since Quantum Shielding makes them all AV 13 short of a Monolith, spam those Hive Guard. It's what they're there for.

Zoans in Pod are good 10 Str and AP 1 will also cut the AV to a 12 w/ Lance. Great vs Necrons. If he uses a Monolith even better.
I would do 3 Zoans in Pod and 6 Hive Guard for Elites.
Necrons also don't have a lot of low AP weapons so Tyrants w/ Armor saves 2 upgreade might be really good. Give them Old Adv, and sit them next to the Hive Guard.
Behind Them I'd prob still have a Tervigon to buff if need be.

MCs open up vehicles like crazy because you always hit on rear armour which is still 10 even with the quantum shielding. With the smash attack on any MC you max out at S10 and will pen on a 1 against av10. Whats not to love?
Also they mean placing your zoanthropes in a spore, which is basically a Tyranid drop pod. This get them in range for their warp lance/blast which basically makes vehicles and MEQ vanish.

Then cover him (the Over/Destroyer Lord) with small bugs instead. They may or may not kill him (though lots of dice will be thrown down), but they should at least be able to tar pit him and MSS against a gant is nothing.

Remember that Mindshackle affects one random model in base contact with the lord. If you've got 5 models in b2b he's only got a 20% chance of shackling your big bug. Challenges do NOT affect this - even though you're in a duel, he can (and probably will) mindshakle a random Tyrant Guard.

Actually, Challenges do effect this.
When you're in a Challenge, you count as only being in Base Contact with the other model in the challenge, no one else.
Therefore, the MSS will usually only effect this model.

All though it makes no bloody sense the Tyranid do have an unusual assortment of characters. I am never to concerned with MSS however, because I never attack Lords with MSS using the Tyrant. It dies equally well to warriors, or raveners, or genstealers, or zaping it with a Zoanthrope. Or even better, sucking out his soul with Doom.

The small bugs are good for infantry but it they won't do squat against Necron vehicles. They are all AV11 on the back so even with AG, the little bugs still can't glance the rear armor in CC or shooting.

Which brings us back to the fact that this is the one matchup where you should be spamming Hive Guard. Hive Guards niche in 6th edition is AV13. A brood of Hive Guard will comfortably destroy a Necron vehicle from outside of LoS.

You can also use your mycetic spores to drop in behind them, let your zoanthropes do what they do best. Or give your spore a HVC and let it hunt tanks. If you can land it close enough its basic weapon is already S6 and with a little luck pop the quantum sheilding.

What Zoanthropes do best in 6th edition is be a psychic toolbox. Give them Biomancy, not their primary powers.
All this tactic will end up doing is suiciding the Zoanthropes. They deserve more than that.
HVC's are terrible at hunting tanks. Seriously, horribly terrible. Inaccurate, single shot, with a -1 modifier on the damage table.
Imperial Deceit wrote:If you can land it close enough its basic weapon is already S6 and with a little luck pop the quantum sheilding.
This is probably the only way a Spore is going to hurt a Necron vehicle in the rear. I've done it, but only once. It's not reliable, and not a tactic you should actually plan around.
The other downside to letting a spore hunt tanks is, unlike Space Marine drop pods, you can't drop them empty. You will need a sacrifical unit inside to drop behind enemy lines. And short of Termagants, Tyranids are short on sacrifical units, and there's better options anyway.

I would disagree that they could "comfortably" destroy any AV13 vehicle.
A full brood of 3 will give 3 hits, which should deal 1 glance/pen.
Even with a pen and likely +1 modifier, the odds of you getting an Explodes! result aren't amazing.
I agree with the sentiment that Hive Guard are the best choice the Tyranids have in this match-up, but would argue that it's "the best of a bad situation".

Iron arm swarmlord is amazing for his points, even more so if he also gets endurance and/or warp speed. Iron arm also cures his instant death weakness which is awesome when the necrons will do their damndest to get a MSS lord to challenge him to stop him from facerolling anything he gets into base contact with. Forcing successful invulnerablolls to be rerolled and always dealing instant death is also priceless against wraiths, and lashwhip guards can force the wraiths (who WILL have whip coils) to go at the same time as you, and ergo get butchered.

From watching a pair of my friends play the OP's setup, I've learned two things:
1. Necrons hate melee. Watching Hormagaunts mow through a warrior squad is comical. Mindshackles aside, a Flyrant will beat wholesale Necron ass.
2. Don't try to out shoot them. You can't. Hive Guard make those cute AV13 vehicles into craters with no problem and Zoans will too. I can't say that Terma's are worth it just because of that nasty Tesla-ness.
Again, I don't play either army, I'm just going on what I've seen. Apply salt where needed.
