Animated gifs in as avatars?

Are extremely annoying. Most respectable websites have these disabled, I don't understand why dakka doesn't.

Double Edit: I'm for prohibiting animated gifs in signatures, though. Unless it has a hot chick.

I like animated gifs as avatars.

If you do not, that are plenty of browser plugins you can avail yourself of - for either Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, or Internet Explorer. Most can be configured to do it on specific domains, or with a hotkey.

Are there even that many gif avatars? I can only think of 2 or 3 off the top of my head and even then i cant recall who they belong too.

Gif sigs aren't that bad either i don't think. I find them enrapturing most of the time. Like the gif of the smiling Asian chicks who have mustaches. Or the one with the girl that headlocks the guy with her thighs and flips him on the crash mat. I could watch those all day long.

I completely forgot about Kronk's avatar, to me it doesn't just move, it flows and dances

The only "prominent" dakkanautaroos that have animated gif avatars are Kronk, Insaniak, H.B.M.C, and now Ouze...

Insaniak's is subtle. The cat's red eye opens and closes.

No way... This requires further investigation.

And on further investigation i have discovered the eyes do in fact blink. It only happens like every 4 or 5 seconds though so its easy to miss. No wonder then that ive never noticed it before.

Mine is as well. There's a sparkle on the right flip flop every 30 seconds...
I don't think anyone has noticed it.

While there is no rule specifically against them, animated images as avatars or signatures are still covered under Dakka's primary rule, which is to be polite. Part of being polite in a visual medium is not deliberately making other posters' eyes bleed.

So while we don't have a problem with animations per se, if we receive enough complaints about someone's avatar, or we see one that we feel is a little over the top, we will ask them to change it.
