"...he could never understand the sense of a contest in which the two adversaries agreed upon the rules." Gabriel Garcia Marquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude
Another fantastic piece of American literature, but because it has aliens and lasers in it, more widely appreciated by the benighted masses. Grumble grumble grumble.
I thought it was a pretty pedestrian book actually.
-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

I did read starship troopers before I knew there was a movie.
Does that make you feel better?
Most of the books I read in my youth were pulled off the library shelf at random from a library that didn't have a very large fantasy section (sci fi and fantasy were rolled together into one half isle).

I'm looking forwards to it, the battle room looks like it'll be an amazing piece of work, I just hope they stick to the book and don't take too many liberties.
I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...
I've never read it either...then again, I've barely read any fantasy/sci-fi books outside of ASoIaF. I've always preferred authors like John Updike, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Ernest Hemingway, etc., etc., to fantasy and sci-fi. It all just seems the same to me. I probably just need to read more.
Oh, and before y'all start hating on me, just remember that I'm not hating on any of you.

I quite enjoyed it and, from your author list, we have similar reading tastes. But then I read pretty much anything that is to hand. Not that I enjoy it all, but maybe reading more trash as well as more good books leads me to judge those good books as better than they would normally be (when compared to the other half of my reading list).
I've watched the trailer through about 5 times now, ha. It looks like they have the scene at the lake (at least I hope that is where he is hugging Val), I liked that scene and her role in it. But apparently they are combining Ender's Game and Shadow, I wonder how that'll work...go from Ender in school to Bean on the streets? Skip Bean's backstory and introduce him as he is in Ender's Game?

I have some hope for it, as a friend of mine that is a huge Ender's Game fan posted this:
So what I know from listening to the audio book a few months back, Orson Scott Card has been VERY apprehensive about letting any studio do an adaptation of the novel as they "suits" wanted to make Ender a teen and have a girlfriend/love interest (and other cliche tripe) to appeal to the "Tweens" and mainstream and he told them to bug off for almost two decades. Then somebody who was true fan got the first draft of the screenplay right and combined elements from both Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow (i.e. Bean's story) to do this right for the big screen.
If it is true he held off the studios so they wouldn't go all 'sci-Fi Twilight' but eventually the right screenplay came along and he negotiated it, it may be a decent translation.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
Not a huge fan of Card, but I'm hoping that this will be good. If only they made some more Robert Heinlein movie adaptations that didn't blow, then that would be something. Then again, better this than another Twilight.
I guarantee you that I'm not really as smart as the test says:

Fingers crossed. The book is classic (though the sequel is better). I think Abigail Breslin may turn out to be a great choice for Valentine. Ben Kingsley is very good, of course, though I doubt his character will be as brutal as he is in the book. ]

There's an animated version with some reasonable talent (Kiefer Sutherland as Raistlin, IIRC?). Those books are just so terribly written that I kind of wince thinking about them. OTOH, a Hollywood screenwriter probably wouldn't do much damage to the plot, and could only improve the dialogue.

Speaker for the Dead. The third one (Xenocide) is pretty good, though after that the series goes downhill in a bad way.

I meant which series of sequels
But nevermind that, you answered.
I made the mistake of bringing up Ender's Game to my gay co-worker. Oops.
Not that the book itself has any blatant homophobia, but the politics of
the author ruins the idea of sharing the book with others. I also heard
he had a book that featured gays in a not so wonderful manner?
