Mournfang’s

Bruiser & Firebelly

100 Gnoblars

The table

Set up

Astrogoth and his assistant survey the field before we begin.

The Ogres win first turn and off we go.

Ogres turn 1
The ogre army surges forward.

The Slaughter Master hiding in the rocks hits the Infernal Guard with a Bone Cruncher, killing one.

The Slaughter Master fails to cast Took Cracker on the Mournfangs and the Fire Belly fails to cast Piercing Bolts.

The Ironblaster on the right flank misfires and cannot fire for the rest of the game.

The other Ironblaster kills 3 Infernal Guard in the center.

Chaos Dwarfs turn 1

The smaller unit of Bull Centaurs charges the ogres w/Bruiser on the left flan,

The Chaos dwarfs us the Chalice of Darkness to take away all of the ogres dispel dice, with their remaining dice the Sorcerer on the Taurus casts Purple Sun.

The Purple Sun travels 30 inches killing 4 Iron Guts, 1 Ironblaster, and 7 Ruglud’s Orcs.

The Ironguts panic and head for the hills, everyone else is fine. The Ironguts take another wound from being shot at by fire glaives.

The first Dread Quake misses the Ironguts. The second misses the ogres with the BSB, but smacks the Gnoblars killing 14, though they pass their leadership test.

Both Deathshriekers fire at the Mournfangs in the center. They kill one out right and put a wound on the other.

Overwhelmed with panic the Mournfangs flee, the ogres pass their panic test.

In combat the ogres only manage one wound on the Bull centaurs, the Bruiser whiffs. The Centaurs in return do 3 wounds to the Ogres.
CD-5 (3 wounds, standard, charge) O-4 (1 wound, standard, 2 ranks)

The Ogres flee right through the Mournfangs, who do not panic. The Bull Centaurs are too tired to catch anyone.

Ogre turn 2

Mournfangs charge the Bull Centaurs on the left flank.

The Ironguts rally.

The Mournfangs on the right and the ogres w/BSB also rally.

Magic is uneventful. The Slaughter Master casts Bone Cruncher but can’t wound. He goes on to cast Tooth Cracker, but the Chaos Dwarfs stop it cold. The Fire Belly whiffs and the Purple Sun moves 6 inches closer to the board edge.

The Lead Belchers kill in Infernal Guard on the left flank.

On the right the Lead Belchers put a wound on the Bull Centaurs.

In combat the Mourfangs put 5 wounds on the Bull Centaurs. The Centaurs can’t get through the ogres armour and whiff.
O-7 (5 wounds, standard, charge) CD-1 (standard)

The Bull Centaurs flee and the Mourfangs smack the Sorcerer on the Taurus.

Chaos Dwarfs turn 2

Bull Centaurs on the right charge the Leadbelchers.

Astrogoth casts Ash Storm on the Stonehorn, preventing him from charging next turn.

The Sorcerer on the Taurus casts Soul Blight on the Mourfangs.

The Sorcerer by the Deathshriekers takes one wound off of the Stonehorn with a fireball, but the big guy makes his save. The Purple Sun continues travels another 30 inches and kills 12 Gnoblars. The template misses the Mournfangs by ¼ of and inch.

Dread Quake #1 misses, #2 gets a direct hit on the ogres w/BSB. It causes 7 regular wounds and kills the ogre under the hole out right.

One Deathshrieker misses the other take a single wound off of the Stonehorn. One unit of Fire Glaives puts another wound on the Ironguts. The next takes a wound off of the Giant and the last scores a wound on the Ogres w/BSB.

In Combat the Leadbelchers score one wound on Bull Centaurs. In return the Centaurs dish out 3 wounds of their own.
O-1 (wound) CD-6 (3 wounds, standard, rank, charge)

The Leadbelchers break and are run down by the Bull Centaurs who hit the Mournfangs.

Impact hits from the Mournfangs cause one wound on the Sorcerer, 3 hits bounce off the Blazing Body of the Taurus. The Taurus causes 3 wounds on the Mournfangs, the Sorcerer causes 1 more. The ogres can’t get past the Sorcerer’s armour and the mournfangs are unable to wound the Taurus.
O-3 (1 wound, standard, charge) CD-4 (4 wounds)

The Mournfangs break and roll a 10, the Taurus rolls 11 running them down.

Ogres turn 3

Coming up really short the ogres fail to charge the Taurus.

The Giant charges a unit of fire glaives in the center.

Just next door the ogres w/BSB charge the Infernal Guard with their own BSB. Still stuck in the Ash Storm the Stonehorn just moves up slowly.

The Slaughter Master casts both Tooth Cracker & Spine Marrow on the Ogres w/BSB. He also kills one fire glaive with bone cruncher. The Chaos Dwarfs are not having much luck stopping magic this turn.

Ruglud’s boys can’t hit a thing. The Fire Belly makes up for it by roasting 18 hobgoblins, though the brave little fellows pass their leadership test.

The Giant jumps up and down killing 8 fire glaives. In return they only the dwarfs only manage 1 wound on the giant.
Giant-9 (8 wounds, charge)
CD-2 (1 wound, standard)

The fire glaives flee and the giant runs them down.

In the big BSB combat, the ogres deal out 4 wounds, the Bruiser does 3 more. Despite the tooth cracker spell the dwarfs deal out 8 wounds and the Castellon adds another 2.
CD-14 (10 wounds, BSB, standard, 2 ranks)
O-10 (7 wounds, BSB, standard charge)

The mournfangs hit the Bull Centaurs for 6 wounds. The Centaurs only manage 3 wounds in return. The Bull Centaurs pass their break test and hold.
O-6 (6 wounds)
CD-5 (3 wounds, standard, charge)

Chaos Dwarfs turn 3

Feeling edgy the Infernal Guard on the left charge the Tyrant and his Ironguts.

Hobgoblins turn towards the Firebelly and the fire glaives take aim at the remaining Ironblaster.

Astrogoth casts ash storm on the Ironguts and the purple sun finally moves off the table.

Dread Quake #1 misses the ogres w/bruiser, but a handy re-roll make it a direct hit thanks to a friendly Sorcerer nearby. For those of you that don’t know each chaos dwarf sorcerer can re-roll one scatter or misfire die per turn.

The poor fellow under the hole is killed outright and the unit takes 5 more wounds.

Dread Quake #2 hits them again for 5 more wounds, they prove tough though and pass their panic check.

One Deathshrieker miss completely the other hits the Stonehorn and takes off 3 more wounds.

The fire glaives take aim and deal 2 wounds to the Ironblaster.

The Taurus drops down and hit Ruglud’s with his breath weapon.

9 orcs get barbequed but Ruglud holds the unit in line.

The Tyrant issues a challenge which is accepted by the champion of the Infernal Guard. Before the champion can blink the Tyrant deals him 5 wounds and squishes him flat.

The Ironguts10 more wounds to that, in return the castellan causes 1 and the Infernal Guard deal out 8.
O-15 (15 wounds)
CD-13 (9 wounds, 2 ranks, standard, war banner)

Even Astrogoth’s leadership can’t save them. The Infernal Guard break and are caught by the Ironguts who then run into the nearby unit of fire glaives.

On the other side of the hill the ogres only score 2 wounds on the Infernal Guard, BSB/Bruiser whiffs. The Chaos Dwarfs hand them back 6 wounds. The ogres are still stubborn from the Spine Marrow spell so they hold.
CD-10 (6 wounds, 2 ranks, BSB, standard)
O-4 (2 wounds, standard, BSB)

The Bull Centaurs hand 3 wound to the mournfangs who only manage 2 in return. The lone mournfang champion breaks and is run down.
CD-4 (3 wounds, standard)
O-2 (2 wounds)

Ogres turn 4

The Stonehorn charges the Deathshriekers.

The Ironblaster charges the fire glaives

The Firebelly tries to finish off the hobgoblins and charges in.

Ogres and Leadbelchers move in on the Bull Centaurs holding down the left flank.

Ruglud and his boyz turn to taunt the Sorcerer and his Taurus.

The Slaughtermaster tries to cast spine marrow again, but the Chaos Dwarfs stop it cold. He does manage to cast tooth cracker on the ogres w/BSB. The Chaos Dwarfs have had enough of the ogre magic and use the Chalice of Darkness to get rid of the rest of the power dice.

With 18 shots the Leadbelchers can only score one wound on the Bull Centaurs.

The Tyrant and his Ironguts together can only manage 3 wounds on the fire glaives. In response the dwarfs hand out 4 wounds. The Tyrant holds his boys in line.
CD-6 (4 wounds, 1 rank, standard)
O-3 (3 wounds)
(photo missing)

The ogres completely whiff, but the bruiser/BSB takes down 3 Infernal Guard. The dwarfs hit the ogres back with 6 wounds.
CD-9 (6 wounds, standard, BSB)
O-4 (3 wounds, BSB)

The BSB dies fleeing so the Infernal Guard take their free reform to face the Stonehorn.

The Stonehorn kills 4 Deathshrieker crew with impact hits and the ogre finishes the rest off.

Seeing the charge coming the Stonehorn reforms to face the Infernal Guard.

The hobgobos put a wound on the Firebelly who does nothing on his own. The gobos win combat but the hot head holds his ground.

The Ironblaster kills one fire glaive on impact and the rhinox takes one more down. The ogre whiffs. The dwarfs dish out 2 wounds to the Ironblaster.
CD-4 (2 wounds, rank, standard)
O-3 (2 wounds, charge)

The Ironblaster flees the fire glaives test to restrain and reform on the Stonehorn.

Chaos Dwarfs turn 4

The Bull Centaurs on the left charge the Leadbelchers

Both the Infernal Guard & fire glaives charge the Stonehorn.

Sorcerer on Taurus charges Ruglud and his boyz.

Astrogoth again hits the Ironguts with an ash storm. He then blasts the giant with burning wrath taking knocking the big guy out of the game.

Dreadquake # hits the ogres w/bruiser again killing the guy under the hole and doing 3 other wounds, but they pass their panic check.

Dreadquake #2 hits the gnoblars killing 18, they pass their panic too. (had to use big bases, too many wounds to use individual head stones)

In combat the Leadbelchers whiff. The Bull Centaurs deal out 3 wounds.
CD-4 (3 wounds, charge)
O-0

The Leadbelchers break and flee through the gnoblars who pass their panic test. The Bull Centaurs run into the gnoblars.

The Tyrant kills 4 fire glaives; the guts add 1 more to that. The fire glaives put 3 wounds on the ogres.
CD-4 (3 wounds, standard)
O-5 (5 wounds)

Feeling the strain is too much the fire glaives break and run. They Tyrant and his lone Irongut restrain and reform on the hill.

On the other side of the field 3 orcs die from the Taurus’ blazing body. The sorcerer kills 1 more orc, Ruglud whiffs and the Taurus takes out the last 3 orcs.
CD-8 (7 wounds, charge)
Orcs-0

Ruglud bolts; the Sorcerer restrains and turns his beast towards the fleeing Leadbelchers.

The Stonehorn kills 3 Infernal Guard, the Ogre kills one more. The fire glaives deal the last 2 wounds to the stone horn and the big guy goes down.

The Chaos Dwarfs reform towards the Slaughtermaster.

The sneaky hobgoblins put 2 wounds on the Firebelly who squishes 3 gobos on his own.
Gobos-3 (2 wounds, standard)
O-3

The hobgobos win due to their musician. The Firebelly breaks the hobgoblins catch both him and the Ironblaster.

Having very little left to deal with 2 more turns of magic and war machines the ogres concede defeat and the game is over.

For my man of the match I would say it is a close tie between Astrogoth and the Sorcerer on the Taurus. The ash storms from Astrogoth saved my bacon a few times but the Purple Sun cast in the first turn was also huge. It took out the only long range missile fire he had and cost the Ironguts and extra turn of movement. In all I think I had a lot of luck more than anything else.

Well that is about it. Once again I was impressed with the amount of pain that Chaos Dwarfs can dish out. With their basic troops having S4 and I take either GW or fire glaives they will be S6 or S5 in combat. Things like ogres are not so tough being wounded on 2s & 3s. We had fun playing, but I think there will be a few less jokes about the beards.

We are still getting back into fantasy so if you see anything that we missed let me know. This was also our first battle report using the wound counters. It took a lot longer using them but it did seem easier to follow the pics, so let me know what you think and thanks for reading. Please forgive any typos or errors I have only had about 3 hours of sleep the past few days.

A fantastic read, thanks! Also, as someone who loves vintage models, I am in absolute awe of the Chaos Dwarf army...so many fantastic models. I'm very jealous!

Peace through superior firepower.

Thanks for reading. I don't get it either, but for some reason GW has always used Dwarfs instead of dwarves. I bet it helps with copyright. As for our next game another buddy and I are planning for Night Goblins vs. Dogs of War, should be loads of fun will let you know when it is posted.

Thanks, for me it is all about the details and putting out a good product. For future games I would like to add some more like charge/flee arrows and maybe paint the wound counters, but life gets in the way of second life. So we shall see when that gets done

Thanks for the comps, I love old models, especially the work done by the Perry Twins who I think did most of the Chaos Dwarf stuff I have. I like most of the stuff GW put out between the early 90’s and about 2006. If you liked this report keep an eye out in the future. I am working on a list and hoping to find a willing victim to throw about 30 bull centaurs at. I don't know how well it will play, but if I can con a buddy into playing it should be something to see all of them move across the table.

For me it was terrible timing, just turning of the comp to get some (much needed) sleep then I noticed this and read it the whole way through...

Only thing to add, the Bull Centaurs on the left flank should have lost their standard bearer, due to the "Last Stand" rule. Then the leadbelcher combat would have been different. But otherwise no real change to the result.

Glad you liked.
I think we were doing that wrong. They did lose the standard when they broke, but we were replacing the standard with a regular rank & file like the standard was dropped. We found out later that we did it wrong, but it balanced out because we did it for both sides through out the game.
