The strange thing is, you don't even need a lawyer. If it ever went to court, which it wouldn't, GW would lose. Immediately.
I guess some businessmen just have spines made out of jello and can't handle a little pointless threatening by someone bigger than them.

If theres a price hike im going to pretty much quit this game for sure. I have easily over $10k in GW product (a lot of that still in retail packaging) that will be going up for sale... way I see it is thats $10k less dollars that GW wont be getting from the people that buy my second hand stuff, let alone the future sales they will be losing from me.

Well, honestly it's not that easy... as someone who is currently involved in a lawsuit (as the plaintiff) I can tell you that nothing about the civil process is simple or cheap.
I think it is just a case of it not being worth the trouble. Which is a real bully move on GW's part. I'm not a GW-basher, but they are getting incredibly heavy-handed lately. I've been in this for nearly 20 years now, so I know they've never been the most easy-going of companies from a litigious standpoint, but man they really seem to be on a tear these days.
I think what makes it so galling is that there is very little gray area on this issue. Most issues of law can be argued either way, but there are so many legal precedents against what GW is trying to do here.

1. Its worth more than that
2. Tradition is an invalid argument, as tradition dictates that we would have seen a price sheet by now for the pending change.
3. If GW raises their prices on anything at all they will have pretty much priced themselves out of the hobby. A large chunk of their range is solidly in the "the price is too damn high" territory for me, as it is most people I game with (hence why we almost exclusively play warmahordes in the area now, PPs prices may not be tons better but the fact that I need significantly less stuff makes it an attractive option.

They have been doing this June price hike for years, so I don't understand this reaction. The price hike is usually 5-10% to "compensate" for 5-10% less sales, so above inflation.
Ailaros wrote:It turns out that the supreme court of the United States disagrees with games workshop on this one, and only one of those two entities has the force of law.
Following the Chapterhouse lawsuit, I am not certain that GW is aware of that. They don't show any respect for US law institutions.
I believe that the price hike will be far more than just 5%-10%
Far more indeed. Expect 5% to +20% or more. Just like the (June)2011 price increase and the (June) 2012 increase.
Same pattern. More revenue streaming. More losses to the customer base. But they will make a wonderful profit in their financial report as they ramped up their product line for this fiscal year, which in turn will probably be given out as dividends to the stock holders.
Sounds like the usual to me.

You don't need a lawyer for a criminal case either, but it's not to bright to go in without one.
But your chances with a lawyer are a lot better, since they know the Rules for that Court, who to file what with, and where. If you go in without one, and do not have all the paperwork done just right, you may lose, even if the case should have been fully in your favor.
Even then, GW can still drag you into court on two or three things, file to push dates back, file a restraining order to stop you from selling their product until the issue is over in court (which can be done, and sometimes will get passed down) tying up your product, and putting you in a spot where you might get into legal trouble if you slip up.
On top of that, you have to go to court, and may have to go over and over, meaning you are not in your store to make sure things get done, orders placed. You are paying a lawyer so that cuts into your wallet, and into orders. Paying employees to cover you not being there so you can go to court.
And some stores are not that big. I worked 7 days a week (5 on drill weekends) Had one reservist who worked part times, and two other part time employees, to cover days I was not there, or times I had to be else where. So it cost me more money to pay them extra house to do anything.

You are misinformed and/or remember badly. The June price hikes are usually announced about one week in advance and rarely leak much earlier. For obvious reasons.
chaos0xomega wrote:3. If GW raises their prices on anything at all they will have pretty much priced themselves out of the hobby.
They price about 10% of their customers out of the hobby per year. They priced the complete Hobbit range out of anyone's reach. They will go on as long as they are able to pay dividends to Tom Kirby.
Adam LongWalker wrote:I believe that the price hike will be far more than just 5%-10%
The individual price hikes will be more. 5-10% is the estimated price hike average on all sales (some items will not get more expensive).

They can't, and that's not what they're doing. They're just changing their retailer agreement so that if you want to get stock from GW at the retailer discount you can't sell bitz. There's absolutely nothing they can do to stop people from selling bitz obtained through other methods (which will cost more, of course). The bitz sellers that are closing are doing sovoluntarily because they've decided that getting the discount on GW products is more profitable than running a bitz business.

Because GW will still refuse to sell them products at the retailer discount if they find out that a store is running their bitz business on ebay. And apparently the bitz business isn't profitable enough for anyone to be interested without getting kits at the full discount.

I honestly been playing since 1990. I really can no longer afford to buy anything from GW minus ebay or something. A price increase again might be needed by GW, but will push the game out of a lot more hands including my own.
I instead intend to finish what i have and move on. I did want a few more pieces, but they are not necessary really. If prices were more reasonable I would be funding GW more. Now they will have almost if not 0 from me. Heck i cant really find people to play with or encourage new people to play it anymore.
I probably will get a few Warmachine and Bolt action stuff and go that direction and other minature companies if and when i feel like them.
From the new releases i see less and less the dark gritty universe and world of warhammer as well and has a warcraft feel to them to me in my opinion... heck i am waiting for fighting pandas in warhammer next...and joking aside on that their rules in my opinion are less play tested at least to my view than they seemed to be back in the day.

the price hikes are getting eye watering now, thank heavens i got my Tau order in (which i had bugeted for...).
But its still bonkers i fully expect a vindicator to be £40 sooner or later, on that note you can off GW.
Though warmachine can be equally expensive as GW in some ways, but Bolt Action is far cheaper...

I was priced out of the hobby long ago. That hasn't stopped me from making four different armies this year though.
Think of it this way: the models you buy now will be worth a little more after this price hike. You can make that new army, you just have to sell an old one you don't use anymore.
I've only ever bought models with the money I've made from selling them for a few years now. Waiting for the odd 30% discount from the online retailers helps.
I know some people love their old miniatures and don't want to sell them, but its an easy solution for a minimalist like me.

Interestingly my local GW manager speculates (and he has no insider info as we know they never, never tell shop staff anything!) that paints will go up this year.
I anticipate an increase like last year, big hits on some ranges and nothing on others. I imagine nids will get hit as they avoided any raises last time out.
GW's policy is virtually public, it is certainly on their shareholder statements. They will raise their prices heavily because their policy is to maximise unit profit, this will continue regardless of volume decreases as long as the price rises allow profit to continue to grow. Clearly smaller production runs, etc are ideal for a company that does not produce enough volume to take proper advantage of economies of scale.
They will only stop increasing prices when volume sale decreases outweigh the increased unit profit and profit falls. Then I don't know what they'll do. I can't see the current management cutting prices to increase sales, this does not seem anywhere on their radar.

I disagree. I remember the past 3 or 4 years I had ample time to buy several hundred dollars worth of product between the leaking of the price sheet and the actual changes going into effect. Approximately 1 month is the usual timeframe between the two events.
By the way, just going to throw it out there, GW has effectively doubled or tripled its volume of yearly releases with its new monthly codex/army book release schedule, its possible they won't raise prices based on the fact that they are (or should be) selling at greater than expected volumes (judging by the whole "Tau are completely sold out via pre-orders alone" thing I would imagine this is the case).
Also, food for thought: If GW LOWERED prices 10%, we would all be singing hallelujah to the heavens and buying ridiculous quantities of product based on that fact alone, lol.

1.) We will see in 3 weeks latest who is right
2.) GW is not releasing more products this year than previous years. We just see some overdue, long ready army books and Codices finally released. Miniature release is steady.
3.) GW has severely reduced its production, closing manufacturing sites in China and USA, following reduced sales the previous 7 years. Now if there is demand of any product, they can't react that fast.
4.) GW only knows one answer to all sales problems: Raise prices to keep revenue flat for one more year.
