Hello Dakka,
Like it says in the title, I'm looking to see if anyone on here is/knows of someone that's good with 3D modeling. I'm looking into launching a hard sci-fi miniatures game, but since I don't know how to sculpt or use 3D modeling programs, I'm needing someone that can. If you're interested, PM me w/h details and some example of your work and I'll get back to you ASAP!
Cheers!
~Tim?

While it wouldn't help much in the short term, you might be interested in trying out digital sculpting with the free program, Sculptris.

That does look nice. I downloaded K-3D, and was pretty daunted by the sheer amount of technical lingo and buttons. I'll take a look at Sculptris.

Since you said you have no experience sculpting I'm going to assume you also have no experience in manufacturing wargame miniatures as well.
Please read this, it will help:

Also, don't limit yourself to just digital sculptors, there are a lot of skilled traditional sculptors out there looking for work as well.

What kind of models are you looking at having made? I do 3D modelling a little bit, but I use a program called Oxygen which is designed for use with Armed Assault 2 series by Bohemia Interactive. I've made some stuff, to include some 40K things. However, I am not good at making models of people. I can do weapons and vehicles pretty well. I could be persuaded, though I'll be pretty busy in the near future. I can certain do something for you, as I'm on my way out of Afghanistan with no missions to go on.

Thanks for the link! It's definitely in line with what I expect. I'm looking at some more traditional sculptors at the moment as well as digital sculptors.

I wrote the "About Startups, Crowd Funding, and ZBrush:
A Gaming Miniature Perspective" and noticed some of you DakkaDakka folks checking in reecently. I figured I ought to post a little update, so towards the bottom you'll see a screenshot showing some of the issues you should be aware of with 3D sculpts, specifically geometry and polycounts. That's a bit geeky, but when you see the picture you will understand what I am talking about. http://www.fortressfigures.com/kcontos/before.html
I realize few people are going to spend $700 to buy ZBrush and spend the time it takes to figure it out, so I recommend you download MeshLab, http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/ an open source, portable, and extensible system for the processing and editing of unstructured 3D triangular meshes, It can open and convert a lot file types from many different programs, and free is a pretty good price.

I know a lot about manufacturing and little about the rest of the business and have also been in the process of building a miniature game. I am glad you some good response to your post with help. I mostly some sort of gut checking ridicule. I am not bitter, just made me have to look at the process more. I would really subject going with traditional sculptors and digital ones in unison. Some things just translate better. Also and this sounds messed up but learn to work with Chinese manufactures. After doing a hefty cost analysis of manufacturing types, you can get a lot of cost saving going with foreign manufacturing. Last but hardly least OWN YOUR MOLDES!

I can put you in touch with some 3D artists if you PM me. But here are a few things I learned the hard way...
You need concept art for everything. Not just a picture of a guy standing there with a gun, but you should have multiple angles in your concept art, or closeups of special details that need to be sculpted too. This is true for traditional sculpts too not just 3D.
If you are going to do 3D prints and then getting resin or metal figures, Zbrush will work fine. But, we've been looking into plastics lately and they say Zbrush is NOT good for plastic .. something to do with the vertices and insert-technical-words-here causing most edges to look jagged or pixelated when you get the metal molds tooled. If you make something in Zbrush, and import it into CAD software to fix it, it requires even more work and it's usually faster to just redo it from scratch. So if you are looking to do plastics one day, it might be good to look for artists that use CAD software from the get go, instead of 3D. But, Zbrush is still great for 3D prints and resin or metal figs though.
What you can also do is make a post on tabletopgamingnews.com just saying you are looking for artists for your game. Also conceptart.org is a great place to find artists, some will even work for nothing because they just want to get their portfolio built. But in my experience you get what you pay for, and the more reliable people will want to be paid

I need to plonk down some major time working out fluff and concept art. I might even attempt to learn digital sculpting on my own with Sculptris. I'll probably put some models up on Shapeways while I work on those other things. Thanks for all the help, guys. You've given me a really good idea of where I need to go, who to go to, and what to expect. I'll be keeping you all updated on what happens with this project. ~Tim?

Actually ZBrush is commonly used for plastic production, including CAD to cutter as wel as STL prototyping, and can export print files in several formats. It is a good idea to use a secondary program such as MeshLab to check the mesh prior to printing for any 3D software.

If you want good 3d Sculpts, then it will be much cheaper to hire an experienced artist rather than learn the art yourself
