Ok this is my first try at a list. Likely opponents are Orks, Imperial Guard and Dark Eldar. Possibley Chaos Marines at some point, but by then we'll have moved beyond 500 points most likely.

HQ
Librarian

Troops
Tac Squad - 10 men
Plasma Cannon
Plasma Gun

Tac Squad - 5 men
Plasma Cannon

Scout Squad - 5 men
Sniper Rifles
Camo Cloaks
Missile Launcher

Heavy Support
Predator
Heavy Bolter Sponsons

That was 500 points on the nose. Scouts hold close/mid objective and deal with any armor, 5 man tac mid, 10 man tac goes where needed, predator offers anti infantry support where needed most. As originally posted I don't have much experience with the libby so I'll stick with the first piece of advice and stick him with the 10 man squad for support. I have all the models for this list so until I expand and pick up some more heavy weapons options I think this will be it.

Looks solid. The libby can go with the 10 man squad and advance forward in a pretty safe power armor blob to take objectives.

While plasma is nice, the best you have in your army is S7. While you generally don't see a lot of heavy armor at low points, you get some. You are bringing an AV13 tank yourself.

I'm not sure what DA pay for upgrades, but a LC or some melta would be nice. If you do plan on marching the 10 man squad up, swap for a HB, they snap fire better. Or a MM.

Fair point, I know the IG army has Russes...I don't know if they're in his 500 point list, but he has the models. Ork army is 100% infantry boyz. Maybe swap the 10 man squad to a MM for heavy and melta for special? That would leave me with 10 points extra.

It's a coin toss. Do you melta up the advancing squad, while keeping the campers set for anti-infantry? Or walk a HB/F squad across the table while a pair of LCs cover their advance?

As long as you have the job covered, it doesn't matter exactly how you do it. Sometimes the right choice is which mini has the better paint job.

As I forget to mention it explicitly before, my advice is from a C:SM point of view. While there isn't a huge difference between greenwing DA and Ultramarines, take what I say with a small grain of salt.

I like the HB/F squad idea covered by LCs, but all I have right now are the plasma models, plus the meltagun from the tac squad sprue. So the melta route lets me get by with only having to pick up one set of bits for the MM. As I expand my army though, I think the first path I'll travel will be that mentioned.

I want to eventually move to a pure ravenwing army, but have a sizable greenwing collection right now so I want to try get that ready as soon as I can so I can start playing, since I'm going 6th company that gives me 10 tac squads to put together which should give me a fair number of choices for loadouts.

I'd say reduce the first squad to 5 guys, put one of the squads in a Rhino with a couple of meltas (or meld two of the 5-man squads into 1 10 man squad) and then have them be dropped off by any big bad vehicles you may encounter and melta the gak out of them

I like that idea...this is more of a rules thing, but being a new player I don't know exactly how this works (we've only made it to mission 3 in the DV tutorial missions) but can two 5 man squads ride in one rhino?

If you have a 10 man and you combat squad them, then yes two 5 mans can share the same rhino.

Here's an alternative list that doesn't leave anyone snap firing and let's you piss in TFG's Cheerios who brought a vendetta to a gunfight

HQ:
Librarian

Troops:
9x marines, no special weapons

5x marines, one with plas cannon

5x marines, one with plas cannon

HS:
Predator with TL'd Lascannon and Lascannon sponsons
Want a vehicle to die? Point this baby at it. It'll go poof real fast.

Throw the librarian in the 9 man squad and take Prescience for the rerolls to hit and watch them work miracles

Elite infantry getting you down? Throw down two plasma cannon plates on top of their 200 point 5 man squad and listen to them whine. Still not dead? Follow up with lascannons just to be sure.

It's 501 pts but it's not like you're going to tourney with this army

Revised list...not perfect, but I have the models for it. So until I get some more models to support the meltas/MM/lascannons/HBs I think I'll give this a try.

Why not Missile launchers instead of plasma? No get hot, high str, option of blast or krak, same cost, 12" more range. That's just personal preference, but my Devs/Tacs with heavies almost always have ML (and the Plascannon you have should be just fine as a proxy in a friendly game).

I know it's two more things to keep track of (I hate using proxies, personally, if I can avoid it), but ML do quite well, IMO. Plus, if you're trudging, couldn't you make a snap shot with a ML's Krak? Better than no shot, and if you have the shot for the blast, take it.

Well, there's no good reason. Basically I'm pretty OCD with my minis and the only MLs I have right now are old models that are painted a bit differently that I am painting them now....they're 15 years old. So its surely something I can try out, just not crazy about having an oddball out on the table.
