Im not the most experienced player. I like to go watch a match or 2 after work at the local shop just to learn a thing or 2. When I see something that seems odd I like to go look it up latter.
Well this seemed a little odd...I would ask there but I didn't want to cause a confrontation between the 2 of them because they seemed a little tense at each other.
It was a match between daemons and Tyranid (just sounds interesting in itself) I watched as one guy drops his bloodthirster in on his hq some dude with 4 scythes for arms (not tyragon..but cant tell you more sorry).
Bloodthirster goes 1st...lands 6 blows... 5 wounds and 2 of those were 6's..considering those are supposed to be decaped blows I was a bit surprised to hear that tyranid cant be instantly insta killed...now the snake scyth thing strikes back..lands 3 blows and 2 wounds and 1's a 6.
"insta death...your bloodthirsters dead!!!".
At that point I left before people started throwing things. Seemed a it odd so i figured id ask you guys

The only way it could have worked was if it was the Swarmlord (or a Hive tyrant) with Biomancy that happened to roll a cerftain psycic power, thus giving it EW.
So its plausible, but not consistent.

Well if it was a unit that had iron arm casted on it (fairly common to see with tyranid mc's) it would have eternal warrior on it so it would be immune to ID as for the tyranid IDing the thirster I'm not too familiar on nids wargear myself so I can't help you with that

Based on the OPs post however, the most likely scenario is that it was the Swarmlord vs the Bloodthirster, with the Swarmlord getting the aforementioned Psychic power.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Bonesabers do cause ID standard. Boneswords need the additional LD rolls for ID. Aside from that situation, i can't think of anything that would simply ID the Thirster.

Could have been a conversion. Also Mawlocs are not HQs. i'm assuming OP meant that it was not a Tervigon.
The only HQ models that can have 4 "Scythes" is the Hive Tyrant or Tyranid Prime. The problem is neither of these would cause ID on a Bloodthirster. Unless it was Enfeebled.

Keep in mind, though, there's no official Swarmlord model (except a modified and proxied hive tyrant.) If he had done some custom work then the swarmlord could potentially look snakey.

Actually there is. It is one of the variants you can build with the plastic Hive Tyrant. Prior to that there was not one.

The only thing in the Codex I could think of that could ID the Thirster would be a Swarmlord indeed.
As Happyjew said there is an official model for it in the current Hive Tyrant boxes. It's on my list of things to build somewhere. Deep down somewhere.

Sounds like shenanigans. The Swarmlord only has 5 wounds but gets a 4++ against it. You said Tyranids don't suffer ID this is not true (it used to be true). Whilst Iron arm can give the SL eternal warrior it also increases his T by d3. So did he successfully roll that power then cast it and did the BT really do 5 wounds when wounding on most likely 5s or 6s at best 4s? The Daemon player would have known the SL had EW because the Nid player would have had to tell him he was casting Ironarm and what that power does...

For some reason, people can hear "Monstrous Creature with Strength and Toughness 7-9, Eternal Warrior (possibly FNP as well with Endurance) with WS 9 and Initiative 6, 4+ invuln in CC, always causes instant death, forces successful invuln save rerolls for opponent" and still think it's a good idea to charge it with their expensive CC HQ.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Or for some reason they can hear it and think someone's trying to pull their leg in the worst manner possible. The 6th ed rulebook psychic powers do make some psyker units worth a lot more than the points they were costed at in their pre-6th codex.

I'd even say overcosted considering that it's slow, nowhere near as durable as other similarly priced HQs against shooting, and incredibly reliant on Tyrant Guard to keep itself alive (further increasing the amounts of points you need to spend to have Swarmlord in your army) and getting the right psychic powers. The only reason current Tyranid lists can get away with having 260+ point HQs like Flyrants and the Swarmlord right now is the points we save on undercosted Tervigons.
