hey guys, I'm looking to depart from my usual armies (nids and Eldar) to take on the Chaos Space Marines.
I love the look and feel of their fluff, plus they have some of the coolest models in the game!

I was wondering what would be a good way to start off? I'm hoping to go Nurgle as being almost unkillable
as far as troops go is very nice to have

A nice nurgle combo is a lord on bike with MoN and chaos spawn with MoN

3 Helldrakes.

and ally it with Chaos daemons or necrons.

honestly, I don't like using flyers. and I'm not interested in allying teams because if I wanted to use Necrons or Daemons,
I'd play Necrons or Daemons hahaha

He only has nids & eldar, both of which can not ally csm.

I am so glad you want nurgle, bcuz I recommend plague marines for new players.

Suggest more pm meltaguns in rhinos or footslog plasmaguns. Recommend giving pow fist to plague champs instead of pow axe+ mb in the future. If you go with many rhino route, I recommend taking predators& vindicators other wise oblits+MoN.

These kind of suggestions upset me, bcuz people are not taking the time to truly read and give proper recommendation. However I had been suggesting IG players to get 9 Vendettas.

Hey kiddo! Welcome to Chaos! It's an extremely rewarding army and provides a lot of options, an amazing back story and some challenging paint jobs. I know you said you don't like fliers however, Heldrakes are arguably the best model in the game gameplay wise, and they look tremendous. It is such a mind screw for your opponent to look across the table opposite of two or three of them. I personally run 2 in every list I build. They're worth their points, and cost. GO WITH THE HELDRAKE AND THANK ME TOMORROW!

As for other units. I recommend going with plague marines if you like nurgle. Even if you're not going to use them every game, it's excellent to have at least 50 cultists. They're great for their points cost, and if you get the HQ Typhus he turns them into plague Zombies. They're a great method of delivering a mean HQ and they're a cheap troops choice if you decide in a game like purge the alien to min your troops cost and bring big bad units. So if there's anything to take away from that paragraph, it's make sure you build your army with lots of troops. They're your core, they score objectives and last I checked 5 out of 6 games are objective based.

Next elites: In my personal opinion this isn't our strongest suit, you're definitely NOT doing it wrong if you decide to take zero from these choices. If you decide for plague marines, take a chaos lord with the mark of nurge or Typhus. That unlocks them as troops and you will love your life.

Fast Attack: Heldrakes fall into this category and they're a MUST BRING. They're soooooo good. Durable and not to mention their flame template is AP3 and ignores cover, can be fired up to 12 inches from any point of the base of the model, and has the torrent and soul blaze special rules. Nurgle bikers are also fairly decent. T6 is nothing to scoff at. Raptors are ok if you want to take a melta or two and deep strike them. They aren't the best though.

Heavy Support: This is really the best part (in my opinion) of our codex. We have a bunch of things to choose from and honestly I think it's a matter of preference here. Personally I don't think land raiders are very good. Aside from those, Predators are excellent and VERY cheap, the only thing to remember with those though, take them to do 1 thing really well, i.e. don't take heavy bolter sponsons with a las cannon turret, they won't perform well. Take either auto cannon and las sponsons, auto cannon and heavy bolters, or triple las cannon. OBLITERATORS, they are excellent. Very nice variety of weapons and they can deep strike. Take them with the mark of nurgle so it's very hard to kill them, and I personally like to bring them in a squad of three. All the other heavy support options are good as well.


So in short TLDR: GET HELDRAKES, bring a nice amount of troops, ignore elites if you want to, and bring your heavy support with a plan in mind. I hope this helps, and welcome to the eye of terror!
