What will really make this worthwhile is an affordable 3D scanner.

People keep asking if these things are ready for 28mm. The answer is no, at least not in any financially feasible circles.
Now...my follow up to that is this:who cares? the terrain you could make, along with the larger scale models (you could easily make different parts to a foot tall or so space marine)...now THOSE possibilities are almost as exciting to me as printing my own armies of little space men and bugs.

I know it's the wrong scale, but this is some serous awesomeness with regards to what you can do with a 3d printer. Arnies Terminator chain-gun! https://www.facebook.com/therpf?hc_location=stream

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

I finally looked into this and it looks like its a great price for just the printer. However, the cartridges seem to be extremely expensive for what you get.
I wish it would list exactly how much plastic is in a "cartridge." If this is a standard printer and it the plastic is fed through a gear at top just above the extruder there should be no reason why a person wouldn't just go buy the plastic on amazon for much cheaper.

Shapeways might be a good way to create special characters for HQ or for RPGs. I personally am going to try to expand my 3d software knowledge for that purpose.

and 40k was like McDonalds - you could get it anywhere - it wouldn't necessarily satisfy, but it was probably better than nothing.

Print off your required models right there... no shipping, no ware houses of product, no limits on what you do or don't stock...
The future is here people!!!
Yep. I think you are on the button there. Printer at home are a bad idea for most, as the upkeep on them will always be expensive. I had a laser printer but its was such a bitch (cleaning, replace parts, toner etc) that I just used to go down to staples to get my printing done. I think the same will be for models. If GW had their own custom specified printers and you simply go down and get your file printed this would be cool. Also, imagine a bit of software for conversions and assembly from digital components!

I've considered using Shapeways as a way to get a printed prototype that I'd then make a mold from for cheaper reproduction.

IIRC its about 300g of plastic, but as I posted its like a loss of 25%

Every brick & mortar store is basically a showroom for Amazon, particularly BestBuy and their obscene prices...

I still shop Staples and Best Buy for tech that I want the replacement plan for.
For this printer, I would definitely get the replacement plan.
