Hey everyone,
I had a question about how you guys take your models to the flgs or friends house?
The official cases are just so much and I don't want to spend that much on them.
I am thinking of making my own case but in the mean time how can I transport my miniatures without damage?
Thanks

Wrap in napkins or toilet paper, stack in any size box. I use trading card sized cardboard boxes to transport my tyranid small creatures, and a shipping box for my monstrous creatures.

you can put them in cardboard trays, think like the bottom of something water bottles or soda would come in. I've done that before. Also if you have any egg foam lying around you can put that in it. I've used a bead case before too, just put one or two minis in each little pocket. Or you can even use an egg carton, (although there can be some breaks). Anyhow, there are lots of ways to carry minis without a case.

I used to use a fishing tackle box, the individual compartments work pretty well.

I just use a box. Ordinary, small packing boxes with no bubblewrap or anything, just that I use small boxes, and put in enough models to stop them shifting too much in transit. Then I just carry them in a bag.

Rarely if ever get damaged, especially when I have separate boxes for larger models like my soulgrinder and monstrous creatures.

My storage is a hybrid of Plano tackleboxes, battlefoam, and GW product boxes with loose minis rattling around in them (I need to improve my storage). The Plano boxes work well, though I can imagine that minis (particularly metal, due to weight) could bang around and get chipped. My paint jobs aren't good/complete enough to care, so I can't guarantee.

Another good tip is to look at scrapbooking cases. You can get them in form factors basically identical to Army Transport, and if you watch for deals you can get them a lot cheaper. It won't come with any internal organization so you'll need foam or something else to go inside.

I use the tool boxes designed for nuts and bolts (little plastic box with individual sections) and i put foam squares on the bottom and load up guardsmen. I also use furniture foam sheets with long thin rectangles cut into them stacked into heavy duty tupperwear. For vehicles I use large heavy duty tupperwear storage containers (like you fill with clothes under your bed) lined with foam on the bottom. Even with the biggest ones I can barely put my IG vehicles into one ><

I've got a rolling tool box from Wal-Mart. It cost around $20. It holds all of my paints and supplies up top and 3 slotted boxes of troops and my rule book and codex in the lower part. My tanks I have in 2 double row trading card boxes which stack neatly on top. I carry my fliers by hand along with my "deployment " tray.

I use shallow-ish wooden trays with fold out handles for my DE vehicles. The prows poke over the edges, and the hulls rest close together. MUCH easier than trying to foam-pad those fething spiky skiffs without losing the sails, blades etc...

My ork vehicles ride in a beat up wooden packing crate. and like it! Trukk and BW models are tough enough to survive a bit of jostling, so long as the Wrecking balls and Claw arms are packed seperately.

Double rifle case with eggbox foam.

In the US you can get these for almost nothing from Walmart. In the UK they're ~£30. I don't imagine that they're expensive in Canada.

You can get a 2000 point army in there without any difficulty.

Those are nice, with the exception that your army is is 1000 times more likely to get burglarized. I knew a guy who kept all of his armies in pistol and rifle cases, which are very nice, but his thieves kept breaking into his car to steal the cases thinking they were guns.

I use these:

and these:

http://www.joann.com/sterilite-medium-showoff-storage/prd791172/

Basically, you put infantry in the compartments (about 3 per slot works for me, less if the model is particularly bulky - for instance, Terminators can only fit 1/slot) and then stack them up inside the box. The JoAnn's near me has the same boxes in that second link, only bigger, which I can use to basically fit a full 2000+ point army. Tanks and gaming equipment (tape measure, dice, etc.) all sit on top of the organizer cases.

It's not the neatest storage in the world, but unless your models are particularly spindly, they won't break. The only things that have broken off for me have been Assault Marines, and it's mainly because they have a teeny tiny contact point with the base.

Edit to add: it's also a very cheap storage solution, you can get storage for a full 2000+ point list for right around 15, 20 dollars.

Another one i forgot that is very easily attainable at pretty much most hardware and big box stores is "really useful boxes" shop around because some places charge too much, but this with a good sheet of foam or egg crate foam will set you up for life.

I went to a craft store and bought a big sheet of magnetic material (like what makes refrigerator magnets stick) Then I got a hole punch about the size of a miniature base (not sure where I found that)...

Punch out circular magnetic discs, glue them onto the bottom of all your miniatures, then get a small metal tool box (the kind you can cary in one hand). Stick them on the floor, sides, top... Really efficient use of space and as long as you don't throw the box they shouldn't move.

The problem with the magnetising bases method is some models just don't take to it well. A Gaunts or Skeletons ankles will snap the fist time you try to remove them without resorting to carefully prying the base off. At which point taking your army our of the case will take half a day.

You don't leave any kind of case, gun or otherwise, in plain view in your car.

Thieves are stupid - do you think they won't break into your car if they see a miniatures case?

If you're looking for foam on the cheap - find an upholster and ask them if you can buy off-cuts.

Keeping your models safe is certainly worth thinking about as part of carrying them. Even if the thieves take time to check the case and then decide they don't want those silly plastic men they might cause considerable damage to the car and the goods.

I currently just use an empty box that once held reams of printer paper. I put a towel on top of the models to add cushion and stop shifting and it mostly works. The models do get tangled which is a bit obnoxious, and I know there'd be more chips if they weren't varnished or not varnished very well.

I plan, for now, to use an above mentioned comment. We purchase large boxes of eggs which have large trays inside for the eggs. I think that in the box, combined with a bath towel will do ok. Just missed out on a guy selling three used Sabol cases and a Sabol motor pool case for $25. Such a bummer.

I went to Walmart and got a good solid plastic storage case for like $9 and went to the fabric store and bought a big roll of 1inch thick foam that they us to put inside couches and chair padding for $16. Then I just busted out a super fine sharpie and a straight edge ruler and marked out a grid pattern and made my own custom cute foam with a razor blade. Looks pretty good too. Only cost me about 30 ish dollars. Fit my whole green tide army in just right with a little room to spare. I just used the razor blade extras they have for box cutters. Had to use a few of them since the foam dulls them pretty quick.

Safety tip. Be extra careful with the razor blades. Just take your time about it and it looks really good. I just wish I could find thicker pieces of that same type of foam. They only seem to have the 1 inch so I had to double up for the HQs
