I was in a csm vs csm (well i had damn allies). The guy i was playing kept pulling this rule out saying something about sargeants in a squad having accurate shooting, that let that character roll a 5 on overrated for a hit and if he rolled a 6 to hit in regular shooting he could pick his target.
Considering my bloodthirster had just decimated his 10 man terminator squad and was charging into his warlord squad i didn't throw a fit or question it...considering he was gonna be tabled.
So I was curious if anyone else had heard of this.

He's talking about precision shots. Characters can choose their target model if they roll a six to hit.

All characters have precision shots (shooting) and strikes (CC). BRB pg.63

And Tau characters can buy a system to give them precision shots on a 5 or 6.

Check page 63 of your rule book under the title precision shots.

All characters can make precision shots, which seems to answer half of your question. I'm not sure what you're asking about with the '5 on overrated for a hit'... If you mean overwatch, then no, there is no general rule that would allow that.

Yes, they're called Precision Shots, and Precision Strikes in close combat, allowing a character to allocate the wound he deals with that hit, instead of it being automatically allocated to the closest enemy model.

These only work on 6s to hit though, not sure what you mean by "roll a 5 on overrated" maybe overwatch? Then no, characters that overwatch still make snapshots, which reduces their bs 1 one, thus making them hit on 6s.

Then no Characters overwatch like everyone else but all their hits are thus precision shots as they need 6s.

No, the precision shots rule specifically says snapshots never trigger it.

Snipers also have this role by the way, which makes them a pain if theres a lot of sniper shots incomming.

Actually since it's in a separate paragraph down below many people miss that bit, GW sure knows how to format 'em

The ATS actually simply gives the model Precision shots.

It then goes on to say that models that have precision shots already hit precisely on 5's or 6's.

The rule Does not simply give them precision shots on a 5 or a 6.

Related note: even if the character uses his precision shots to allocate the wound to a specific model, you still get the option to look out sir! on it.

Also, when your opponent starts using a rule you have never heard of in game, it's usually a good idea to ask him (politely) where that rule is in the book so you can read up on it. This isn't a "dick" thing to do and knowing where such rules are will generally help you become better with a greater knowledge of the rules. I know I'd be happy to point out things like this to my opponent.

Except in the case of a Vindicare!!

But evidently if I try to squish your brain with my Farseer your Guardsman can put his brain in the way....Mind War does convey 'Look Out Sir!'. I think they did this rule just to screw with Eldar players as their Codex was a month out.

Farseer Faenyin
7,100 pts Yme-Loc Eldar(Apoc Included) / 5,700 pts (Non-Apoc)
Record for 6th Edition- Eldar: 25-4-2
Record for 7th Edition -
Eldar: 0-0-0 (Yes, I feel it is that bad)

Battlefleet Gothic: 2,750 pts of Craftworld Eldar
X-wing(Focusing on Imperials): CR90, 6 TIE Fighters, 4 TIE Interceptors, TIE Bomber, TIE Advanced, 4 X-wings, 3 A-wings, 3 B-wings, Y-wing, Z-95

If I'm not mistaken only characters can use look out sir. I always find it handy to snipe out speacial weapons/equipment/banners before trying for seargants so they don't get to deny my precise shots as often with LoS rolls.

Thats how I do it. The sarge in the unit is mostly useless compared to the missile launcher or HB guy giving me fits. So any precision shots will go to the guy that cant make miraculous saves against it.
