Subject: New to the game (playing Menoth)

Alright, my brother kind of talked me into playing this game. I've been grabbing a few Menoth pieces here and there via ebay. I've now got the fully Menoth starter from the 2 player set as well as a Vigilant and a set of Exemplars. Since I really don't know a whole lot about the game and we haven't played it even yet, I'm not exactly sure what sort of units I should add. My brother is going to be my primary opponent for the time being and he is running a Hordes Trollblood army and a Warmachine Khador force, though that one isn't nearly as developed as his Trolls.
Unfortunately, I'm on a bit of a tight budget, so I can't go nuts getting huge smashy stuff. Are there any cheap units I can get that can really mess him up?

The usual Menoth staples are a unit of choir, 2 vassals, and a unit of Exemplar Errants with UA. You'll also want a Reckoner to add to your collection.
Unfortunately, the Vigilant is a pretty lame jack since it can't weapon lock larger bases anymore.

Vigilant isn't really a jack that performs by being an all star, but instead he is a nudge that keeps other things working
Main 2 uses for him is in the back protecting your stuff with Girded, and in the front receiving charges
He is really hearty despite being a 4pt light jack and can take a beating. Sure anything that would scrap a heavy, would scrap him, however end of the day I rather he being scrapped than a heavy.

The problem is he isn't enough of a threat that the enemy will devote any effort to killing him.
All he is is the most durable 4 pts you'll ever put down. He can't even chip the paint of an AV19 heavy with average dice.
I really hope he gets better in MKIII because I love the model.
The only use I can find for him in the current meta is as a zone contester.

Because its not his job to kill heavy jacks?
Its like claiming Daughters are bad for the same reason
Having a durable Zone Contester, Charge Lane Blocker, and Blast protector with Girded is solid usage for him

Anyway...
Choir and a Vassal are the first things to get. With the 2player box stuff, that'll put you up to 25pts. Play some games with just that, to learn the ropes.
Then you'll generally want one of our 3 large front-line units - Errants, Temple Flame Guard ( TFG) or Zealots. All have their uses, and different players swear by different units. Just remember, all really like to have their U/A (though the TFG can get away without their officer and standard if points are tight).
Are the exemplars you have Exemplar Errants or Knights Exemplar? if Errants, there's your front line unit. If Knights Exemplar, they're a good smashy second line unit, but you might consider getting a front line unit as well (or get Daughters of the Flame, and run Knights Exemplar and Daughters).
After that, you can start looking at getting another jack (you won' run all your jacks together, but getting some jacks will give you more options about what to field). A heavy Reckoner/Sanctifier/Castigator kit can be magnatised to give you 3 different options when you want them, so it makes for a good investment. For lights, pKreoss loves a Redeemer, so that might make a good purchase.
If you want some more options, grab some solos - the Covenant, Nicia, Wracks, Vilmon or the Mercenaries Rupert Carvolo or Gorman Di Wolfe, all make great options, if you want a cheap little add-on.
By that point, you'll have a bunch of options and should be able to play 35pts pretty easily. Reassess what sort of things you want to get then, and branch out with a couple of casters. It sounds like a bunch of stuff, but just add a few pieces to your collection slowly, try a few games with them, and move on, and it's pretty easy on the wallet

Yeah, to be totally honest, I bought the Vigilant mainly because it looks cool. The units I have are:
-Kreoss
-Repenter
-Vanquisher
-Crusader
-Vigilant
-Exemplar Cinerators
-Knights Exemplar (not errants)
-Revenger
I'm thinking about getting the Sisters and definitely need to get a Choir. The guy at my FLGS said the Wracks are good. Would any of you recommend them?

Wracks are pure gold, and great for filling in that extra point, I'd take them every time before our other one point option, the meckanik. Because our faction likes running a few jacks, having even that one extra focus a turn just helps keep everything running a little more smoothly. You'll also want to look at the Vassal of Menoth, a 2pt solo that really helps our jacks, especially the Vanquisher.
So, the "essential" support tools for our faction would be Choir, Vassal and wracks. Get those pieces first, as they'll really make your jacks shine like nothing else.

So, the Wracks are basically focus generators, right? That can be very useful indeed. And I know the Choir buffs the 'Jacks, but what does the Vassal do? The Knights Errant, btw, those are basically the same as the Exemplar except they have sword/shield combos and crossbows, right? Which is better to arm them with? The crossbow or the swords?

The Vassal buffs your jacks too, in a different way.
He can either give them an out of action attack(ranged or melee) or he can give them Enliven. Which means the next time the jack takes damage it can make an advance. Both are pretty useful.
And Errants have both Crossbows and Swords/Shields. No matter what you assemble them holding they have both.

I do want to add that Errants play very differently than the Exemplar.
Errants have a rule that allows you to remove another nearby model in the unit whenever a model in the unit is killed. While this may not seem very strong, it has a wide number of extremely potent applications.
One thing they can do is stop all rules that trigger on 'being killed.' For example, berserk allows for an additional attack whenever the attacking model kills another model. However, if you use the Errant's ability, the ability is doing the killing and not berserk, so berserk doesn't trigger.
It can also be used to deny melee and ranged attacks. For example, if you are in a large melee with another unit, you can 'sacrifice' models that are fighting enemies that haven't attacked yet, denying them any targets. The guy who 'died' in the first place will probably be safe, because the model that 'killed' him would have already swung.
They have an attachment that makes them immune to magic and gives a couple other abilities, but what I described above is one of the main reasons they're chosen.
