1 vote for grass noted.
So might be done?
Did a little gold drybrush on the bronze. Sword is the soulstone green over a green metalic. Thinking about glosscoating the orbs?

Wow - that to do pile is … well just wow! Built and primed it gives you plenty of options!
The Necron warrior looks much better with the darker gun, and I’m leaning towards the green grass base, like you said it adds a nice bit of colour.
For the destroyer, he looks really good. Wondering whether the sword needs to be closer to a yellow green rather than a cool green to tie in with the gun?? I’m really liking the brown wash you’ve used as a spot colour on the model.

The primed pile is a little hefty, but I generally try to make it that way to last the winter. And I don’t have the closet full of unbuilt boxes that a lot of hobbyists do; most of the pile of shame is there. Most of the unbuilt stuff I have is scraps from other projects or gifts. I’m not doing the light to dark shift that’s so popular these days with power weapons. I was actually thinking of it might be too bright. kabaakaba wrote:With grass it's looks better. The recesses are a little darker, but I could line them to call them out more. Might be worth experimenting on the next one, and going back to fix this guy if I change my mind. JoshInJapan wrote:How rocky are you planning to make the bases, if at all? Killer robots walking over well-tended lawns doesn't feel particularly 40K to me.
Fighting over neatly trimmed goblin green tables (broken us by some spike cacti) is peak 40k, for certain vintages of the game. Work a cardboard building in there to seal the vibe. I want these guys to feel at home in retrohammer, even if they are modern sculpts. The lawns are well tended because it’s an Eldar maiden world. Was the tomb they are waking from hidden unknown for millennia beneath? Did the Overlord leave his favorite mcguffin here back in the day and is now coming back to claim it? Killer robots just want to kill the happy frolicking elves? These are questions I’ve yet to decide on an answer for. But they are being painted to be a foil to the perfidious knife ears, and will be based to match. I could add more rocks to the scheme, but the parts are going to match.

I’ve seen pics of Eldar done up in a Japanese cherry blossom theme, and if I had the time/money/skills for it would re-do my entire army. Fits the model’s aesthetic, looks awesome.
I’ll just have to settle for colored flower tufts on bases.

Heh. Thinking more about it, and the language of flower arrangements. “What message does yellow daisies and orange lilies send? Anti-tank”
Quick retro research: necron side of the sanctuary battle was an overlord, 33 warriors, 2 destroyers, and a bunch of scarabs. I should put 2 Lochust heavy destroyers on my two-buy list. The stabby ones are descendants, but different role. Doomstalker fills the job, but different thematically.

Big Necron looking good, Nev. I don't see the gloss adding anything, but sometimes we do things like that so WE know it is there, so I can't say you shouldn't. Freshly manicured Goblin Green is a look that never goes out of style. OK,maybe. Anyway, cool idea to replicate the sanctuary battle force.

So, I’m sure you are all waiting with bated breath for my take away from the reveal show.
Red Corsairs: Chaos is not my thing, but those are some pretty nice looking models. I especially like the human captain on the platform. The raider kit is also pretty nice. seeing what I got from the UM upgrade sprue I’m a little disappointed in the Corsairs.
Eldar Corsairs are a little closer to the cut of my jib. Still, I’m pure craftworld at the moment, and don’t feel the call of the void to go out pillaging the stars.
Yriel looks the business. Would not mind grabbing him and painting him in my colors. But a pretty low priority. I’d rather get more PLs.
Jump troopers look nice, but if I’m grabbing that kind of unit, it’s going to be a squad of swooping hawks.
The seer is the most likely to see acquisition so far. Love the model. The only thing that might stop me is if he’s got keyword issues that make it hard to fit into my list. But even then he might get a head swap and serve as a spirit seer.
Not sure how I feel about the vyper/starfang. Nice that we got a new kit, but it feels very different. I suspect that at least one will join the host. I’d like to see more angles/sprue pics.
Maelstom rules - the campaign sounds fun, but I’m wary of dropping money on rule books at the end of an edition. Hard pass. Battalion collections for DE and Voton are great if you play those armies and want those units. But as I don’t, another pass. Not familiar enough to know what kind of deal they are and how much of the box is dross.
OBR: Do I need another Death army? No. Do these guys tempt me? Yes. I’ve always been kinda “meh” on the OBR. But the archers and the assasin guys kinda rock. But not enough to get to to drop for another whole army. And they are not in the spearhead, so I’m spared from dipping into the army that way. Cool for those who do play them, as it looks like the flesh out the range well with some new needed options.
(I actually was able to watch the first half of the show, from this point on it’s just me reading the summaries)
Tzeench stuff looks real cool, but is also my least favorite of the chaos gods. and I don’t need a new army.
Lumaneth hero looks cool. Might grab him if I need an elf warrior mini for D&D. Spearhead looks interesting. But once again, I don’t need a new army.
High Elves in shorts playing sports? OK, it’s silly. Not enough to get me into BB.
SoB animation on W+? I subscribe, I’ll watch it. Not enough of a teaser to say much. Animation looks fine.
Lots of Custodies stuff, presumably in plastic. Initially for 30k, but saying there is going to be a rules update for 40k. Good news for those who play the army, which is not me. But should make them a lot more accessible.
Glaive and Whirlwind? Looking nice. If I ever get back into 30k, will probably grab them. But that’s not going to happen any time soon. Not a fan of how they dribble rules out in supliment books.
Teasers for IW? Maybe demon primarch? Dark mechanicus? I’ll let others speculate
--
So, the only thing that caught my eye are the Eldar. And I’m so far behind painting/buying them, no big rush. Not going to pre-order or rush out on release day for any of this. Eventually some of the elddar stuff will cross the bench. Vyper, maybe the seer. posibly Yriel.

The Necrons are coming along nicely. Solid progress - I agree on the grass to, fwiw. With snow it all just kind of got lost in similar shade/colour.
I'm really not a fan of the vyper. They've taken a Falcon weapon turret and slapped it on a Starweaver chassis. It looks... not original. Like a half idea done in a pinch.
But then again I've been looking at Vypers for just over 20 years in the hobby and they haven't changed. Maybe I'm just reluctant to change.

But then again I've been looking at Vypers for just over 20 years in the hobby and they haven't changed. Maybe I'm just reluctant to change. It’s probably a safe bet that some 3D sculptor will make an old style open gun chair for it. Looking at the close up pics, It looks like the windguard on the turret might be a separate piece. And you can see the legs of the gunner. We may be able to get the wind flowing through their hair with some minor conversion work. It’s not like the NuVyper is a bad sculpt, or doesn’t fit into the range aesthetically. But the old one just has so much inertia. It’s eternal. It’s been zipping around shooting things longer then most 40k players have been alive. And it has that uncanny valley thing going with being enough different from the original, but not so different that we see it as an other. I have no problem with the starfang, despite it being the exact same model, just with different windows (and guns, but those are trivially different visually) From a rules PoV it will be interesting to see the sprues. Between no wargear prices and NMNR, what do we get to play with, and what’s worth it? Pictures show scaterlaser, starcannon and brightlance up top, missile launcher or shuriken cannon below. You will note the back half of the turret guns; they are the same. This is not the standard side mount, using the same guns as the rest of the range. Barrel swaps, not full guns. I would expect to loose the canon/ ML options. Chin gun looks to be the same mount used on modern bikes. Will we keep the twin cats? scatter laser? If we are lucky the new datasheet will contain legacy options. Which I’d bet will go to legends in 11th. I suspect BL/ ML will be the go-to build. If we loose the twin shuriken cannon options I’ll be sad. When points were a thing they were a really irritating bang for your buck. -- In hobby news I pulled most of the AMs off the handles and put 4 more necron warriors down, got them their silver basecoat. Will finish the marines next month, but am also going to try to push one though alongside other projects. After getting the necrons started I then proceeded to get distracted and play though the Ghost Bear DLC for Mechwarrior: Clans. Not bad, but overall not a huge fan of the clans version of the game. I’ve got more DLC on the mercenaries version to play, so might start another run through on that. Automatically Appended Next Post: Little morning progress. Paint scheme note: There are a few places where there are exposed wires where the insulation/tubes. Or just sticking out from damaged bits. I think I’m going to include those in the brown wash to turn them copper. One spot where there are smaller wires poking out from a torn conduit, will probably do those in yellow/orange. Automatically Appended Next Post: More Edits:
Doing a survey of the PoS, it looks like the 3 oldest models are a pair of DW w/ stormbolters and a scout sniper. Looks like I’m going to clean and prime a pair of chapter shoulder pads for the DW, and one needed some repair work. Automatically Appended Next Post:
3rd Company, where we at?
So I own most everything I need. One dread is a little light, would like another. We got one in the 10th starter, if that happens again in 11th I’m set. If not I’ll grab a basic redemptor.
Need to finish building the heavy intercessors, and another stick of 5 basic ones. And then prime/paint them.
That will give me 50 basic intercessors and 10 heavy ones for battleline units. While I would prefer to have every troop on 32mm bases for symmetry, it’s not enough to paint yet another 10 man basic rifle squad. If we do get a new primaris tac squad (which I’m not holding my breath, but am praying to the Emperor for) they will replace the HIs. I might make a squad anyway, just for nostalgia. I’ve got a 3 spare bodies to play with.
On the same issue, the fast attack is also mixed. 10 assaults on foot, 5 jump, 3 bikes, 3 inceptors. They hit the numbers, but not in a way I’m happy with. I’d like 5 more JP marines to even things out. I also have the idea to counts-as a GSC ridgerunner as an ATV. I’ve got 3 more bikes on sprue to make at some point. Kinda hoping they get a full kit and I can use them as a base to kitbash new options.
Heavy Support is overflowing a bit. The supressors are technically HS, but are not needed for the numbers since I got the infernus. If I want to get them all on 32s I have 2 easy paths; I’ve got 5 hellblasters from the full kit, and 5 more push fit infernus marines. Also 3 more agressors. Part of me wants to grab some desolators, just for the options in the toolbox. But I don’t like the way they look. I’d be more likely to grab a 30k heavy weapon box with the MLs and do a counts-as. But that’s a project for another day.
Command is pretty well set. The only thing on the radar is to prime/paint the new Lt to replace the old one. If I get a new one in some box, the old one is also on the short list to be updated. The DI Lts just did not age particularly well. But the slots in the force org chart are full.
As mentioned before, I need another dread. Ideally I’d like 3, a shooty one, a choppy one, and a flexible one. But the brutalis comes with stubbers so is dead to me.
This is just the manpower. I should get more transports. But the impulsor is no rhino.
So to get this whole thing done, I need to finish 4 JP guys and get 10 marines and a dread from sprue to table. Should not be hard. Stretch goal would be to get 10-20 more to get all the FA/ HS uniform and the HIs replaced. Plus the Lt.

Slow and steady. 8th edition came out in 2017. So like 9 years to paint 100 line marines, 9 command, and 2 dreads. Works out to a little over a marine a month. Obviously not done yet. But paint a 10 man squad (and a little extra) a year for about a decade and you too could have a full comapny of marines on the shelf!
Persistence pays off. Keep plugging away, don’t give up.

I'm late to the party on the Necron bases, but I'm throwing my vote for snow. I understand the nostalgic pull of green velvet fields but thematically metal space ghosts just go in the cold for me.
Your hero is looking great. I wonder if there's space to break up the teal on the blade a bit - maybe paint those orbs in the metal colour?
I'm a big fan of the new Eldar too, particularly the bug-eyed farseer. I am also interested in the weapons loadout for the new Vyper - I have fond memories of double shuriken cannon flyers running around before it got changed to only cats.
If I ever get around to making a marine army, whether Chaos or Imperial, I think the Corsair minis will get a workout - I just love the chunky aesthetic of oldschool marines. And their rhinos. Impulsors go in the bin 8-)

I’m not holding my breath, but am eagerly waiting for the new eldar. Lot of potential. I need to clear some out of the backlog. I do like the “not mutated, just evil” renegade look as well. A lot of chaos is all about the twisted warp stuff, less about the marines. JoshInJapan wrote:I always encourage Oldhammer, but if you're going Goblin Green for the bases, doesn't that mean you have to paint their weapons red?
Even when they were in vogue I never liked the red guns. If I get raided by the nostalgia police, so be it. There are a chunk of both vets and phobos/scouts in the primed pile. The 1st will probably get the effort to make it a formal structured company, but both have a lot of units on the to-do list. So for being a long weekend I got very little done. I need to get better about getting to the bench

Just got their nuln oil. Next step is the bright silver. And copper a few wires I missed. Also in the news I’m boxing up a lot of my hobby stuff. Not to move, but some guys are coming over next week to jackhammer my basement to fix a broken pipe under the foundation. Right next to where my glass displays are. So everyone who fits goes into the foam, and cabinets are going to be moved into a safer local temporarily.

Late to the party, but I found that for Necrons (the only minis I ever tried to paint quick) putting a light coat of Black Templars Contrast over some of the shiny bits that are not armour plates (like piston in legs and arms, and the spine) can help to add some more contrast and it allows just a little metal to shine through if not applied to thick so reads as dark metal.

Not a bad idea. Right now I’m basically working with 2 tones. Nuln oiled leadbelcher, and runefang steel. Plus I guess the black legion gun. So 3 tones. Using a thin black templar would let me pick out more stuff if I wanted to diferentiate.

More warriors done. They take longer then nids, but a lot less then marines. Finished the HB marine. Decided to just clip off the hoses. Such a pain to line up. Next up is the 3 basic guys in the squad. Plus pistols and extras, which I didn’t clip yet.

Necrons looks great together and I'm absolutely in love with this simple green bases!
You should add marines body counter each time you add new model

Wow, a second company almost there too. Absolute madness. I can't imagine how many points that totals.
The 'crons in the baclkground of that pic look great, for such a simple and effective scheme. I do think the green offers the colour, and allows the silver to pop. It could of all got lost in the snow.

Necrons are looking good!
And the company of marines is seriously impressive!

If I add any other army bits to bases for these guys, it will be Eldar. But generally I don’t. Some models come with them included, so I paint those as needed. It does happen occasionally. My 3rd co primaris ancient needed a nid with a knife though it’s head, and the sculpted banner did not deliver, so one needed to show up on the base.

I didn’t update my army totals this year. I normally keep a roster in an army builder with everything in it. But with 11th looming this summer, I just didn’t bother. I should go and do it though, before I forget. Will make tracking changes with the new edition easier. With legends and counts-as things are a lot harder to track then they used to be. Plus the points updates. Should be in the 14-16k range for my Ultras.

Thanks. Chipping away at the goals. Will be nice to wrap up the company, but it will probably not happen until summer.

In painting news I put the silver down on the next batch of necrons. Different guns from the first batch. Should not change much paint wise.
Stay safe and warm out there. A lot of us are getting a bit of weather this weekend.

The latest batch of Necrons are looking good Nev. The colour scheme works well and the darker guns look good.
