It goes to the teams. And they pay tax on it. you obviously read my post. Please explain to me which part you are struggling with, and I will try to explain it better.

Ok look this is my opinion, the NFL is a large "organisation" that employs hundreds of poeple from executives to Janitors, the NFL MUST make money in order to survive, fanning out profits to diffrent people so they pay tax on it is IMHO wrong pay the taxes yourselves, you are not a charity you are a business, or at least be more active in communities.

BTW the teams do not receive ALL tv money, just FYI.

Yes, they do. The owners of the individual teams receive everything.

That was Major League Baseball.

The exemption for "professional football leagues" dates back to the 60's, and its grounded in statute.

Edit: Messed up the link.

Ah yes, baseball, that's right.

Anyhow, I agree with your point that government involvement in professional sport is very strange. We have it here as well, you'll see all kinds of odd little exemptions for professional sports popping up in bits of law. It's a weird feeling when you spot it as well, because it's inclusion is almost always ridiculous and unecessary, but it is a reference to something that's quite interesting while you're doing something very boring.

As to the issue at hand, I certainly do love that the NFL is non-profit, and Goodell makes more than 10 million dollars .

And he pays tax on his salary.

It's just that the organisation that employs him doesn't pay tax on their profits... for the simple reason that they're not in business to make profit.

Yes, and those people, when they receive their lawyers fees and commissions... pay tax on them.

Consider the CEO of a very large profit making company - the CEO is paid $10 million, and he pays tax on that. In addition, when the company generates $5 billion in profits they pay tax on that as well.

But what do you do when the organisation isn't trying to make a profit, but is just trying to deliver a service to a number of people and companies who are paying annual dues to keep that organisation doing whatever it is doing? Well then the CEO still pays taxes on his $10 million in salary, but the organisation itself doesn't pay taxes because there are no profits to tax.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
