Is Logan Grimnar competitive? Can he be? Or is he just fun?

He's pretty good, but he's just so damn expensive. But at least he's a force multiplier and a beatstick, so he can definitely justify the cost.

I was thinking of putting him in a pod with Terminators and drop in and beat face! I also thought of the same thing with grey hunters. Or the same two things in a land raider... It sounds to tough and awesome to be true.

I've also been thinking about the Old Wolf, and wether or not he was worth the points. If anyone can make any other recommendations on how to use him, what squads he works well with, what points level he's most cost effective.

Thanks!

I wouldn't run him any lower than 1850pts (and I'm far more comfortable at 2000+, but 1850 would be a bare-minimum).

There's a few different ways to run Logan. One is to stick him with Multimelta Long Fangs in a Drop Pod and use relentless and split fire to hilarious effect.

The best way to use Logan, imo, is to make the ultimate Alpha Strike list.

Something like:
Logan
RP
RP

6 PA WG, 1 TDAWG (all combi plasma, combi melta, or combi flamer heavy flamer in a pod) x4 or x6
Long Fangs (all multi meltas, in a pod, plus a TDAWG with Cyclones or AC, Logan rides here, TDAWG accepts bad challenges for Logan)

You win or lose the game by turn 2.

Logan is a beast no mater what you do with him. I have basically two ways I run him and both of them are a little extreme.
Logan [with 5 Wolf Guard Terminators, including Arjac and a Wolf Guard Terminator with an Assault Cannon and Power Maul]
Njal [With 5 Wolf Guard Terminators, one with a Cyclone]
Björn

This comes out to 13 models at 1,500 points.
For a 2k list I add two Land Raiders.

Then I just use him as a Sledge Hammer usually switching between Logan and Arjac for challenges depending on what I am fighting. Njal sits on high ground and pounds them with Thunder and Lighting.
One game he personally took out two 10 Khorne Berserker Squads one Chaos Dreadnaught and a Chaos Daemon.

I have only lost once and it was a three-way game were Björn got taken out and I had no way to get someone there to stop giving up the VP.

This should give you some sort of idea of how brutal he can be with the right combination.

Logan is one of the best HQ choices in the game. He's pretty up there for characters in a fight (he can almost go toe to toe with Abaddon) and brings a lot to the table.

For what he brings, he's cheap. Most Wolf Lord builds run arund 230pts and he's running 275. And he brings loads more than a normal Wolf Lord.

Scoring Wolf Guard are useful. Having at least one Terminator unit is probably not a bad idea. I'd still bring some Grey Hunters, but 1 or 2 units of Wolf Guard could be useful. Just remember to take advantage of mixing Power Armor and TDA.

After ripping on how bad Logan is for a while (mainly based on experiences against a Loganwing list) I decided to try him out for myself.
He's good. The army he can allow you to bring to the table is good. However he does have some traps.

TDA only Loganwing is ass bananas.
Logan isn't a monster in CC compared to so many of the things out there. Despite how many people describe him as such, he'll still be slapped about by many of the nasty CC choices out there.
You need the blob squad crutch that so many lists rely on.
You're going to have to paint some drop pods.
If you're not playing with WG as troops, you might as well not bother with Logan.
People love to kill him. However you could see this as a blessing in disguise. You can trap opponents or distract opponents with Logan and a decent body guard. Many will go after him if they believe they can. He's strong enough to be fairly ballsy with too.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

I usually give him just the Assault Cannon [I have a Pro-Painted Björn that I don’t plan on replacing]. Currently I am thinking the Plasma Cannon, with his BS6 1 can Re-Roll any 1s I roll for him.

Alright, I've been thinking about buying a plasma cannon for my Bjorn because of that exact reason. I'm going to try this when I get back to the U.S. Should if nothing else be a good laugh. I love those powerful low model count lists. Especially since I travel alot.

Anpu I hate to crash your party but that list is illegal. Logan Njal and Bjorn ALL have Saga of Majesty, and as you can only have each saga once per army............ Need to drop 2 of them I'm afraid

The main selling points for Logan are:

- Makes Wolf Guard troops, for Cyclone Launcher nonsense.

- Tank Hunter

- Saga of Majesty

His one-shot power is okay, the other abilities he can bestow are okay, but the above three are what justify his points premium IMO.

He's not really a combat character, though he can hold his own. He's a force multiplier, not a force in and of himself.

I always cringe when I pay the points to play him, but having 5 or 6 squads of relentless Cyclone launcher scoring troops is badass, no question.

The multi-melta pod trick is funny, but not worth it unless the rest of your list is designed to be there for support turn 2 (things like scouts, fenrisian/thunder wolves, bikes, more pods, etc.). If you leave him hanging in the wind, he will get killed - no question. He dies like a regular TDA wolf lord to plasma.

I think the best way to run him is in a blob moving up the center of the board, surrounded by small squads of CML wolf guard, supported from the back by long fangs. Anything that gets close to try to strike gets swarmed by 40 marines and murdered, anything that stays at a distance gets swarmed by 40+ missles and murdered. Also good to have some thunder wolves or other S10/melta in the list for land raiders, etc...

Arjac is ridiculous, BTW, but for some reason I ALWAYS rolled a one when throwing his hammer. Like every game, six games in a row. I figured he was cursed and retired him to the shelf.

23 - 3 - 3
6 - 0 - 4
7 - 2 - 1
6 - 1 - 1

Noise Marines ear-rape figuratively, then literally.
