Grim Rune Priest in the Eye of the Storm
|
Here is my 1st thought out Allies list with what I have. We normally play non-competitive list with low vehicle counts, but we have just started to include some flyers. Normally I face Orks Marines and Nids.
May Space Wolves w/Guard
Rune Priest in Power Armour, 190 pts (Chooser of the Slain; Runic Armour; Bolt Pistol; Runic Weapon; Master of Runes; Warlord; 6E Psychic Disciplines: Divination; Saga of the Beastslayer)
Long Fangs Pack, 180 pts (Close Combat Weapon x5; Heavy Bolter x1; Lascannon x2; Missile Launcher x2; )
1x Pack Leader (Bolt Pistol; Power Axe x1)
Aegis Defence Lines, 100 pts
1x Gun Emplacement (Quad-gun)
Grey Hunters Pack, 225 pts (Bolt Pistol x7; Boltgun x6; Close Combat Weapon x8; Plasma Gun x2; Plasma Pistol)
1x Grey Hunter w/ Mark of the Wulfen (Bolt Pistol; Boltgun; Close Combat Weapon)
1x Grey Hunter w/ Power Fist (Wolf Standard; Bolt Pistol; Boltgun; Power Fist)
Grey Hunters Pack, 225 pts (Bolt Pistol x7; Boltgun x6; Close Combat Weapon x8; Plasma Gun x2; Plasma Pistol)
1x Grey Hunter w/ Mark of the Wulfen (Bolt Pistol; Boltgun; Close Combat Weapon)
1x Grey Hunter w/ Power Fist (Wolf Standard; Bolt Pistol; Boltgun; Power Fist)
Land Speeder Squadron, 270 pts (Land Speeders x3; Heavy Bolter x3; Typhoon Missile Launcher x3)
Lord Commissar (HQ) [Guard], 95 pts (Refractor Field; Bolt Pistol; Carapace Armour; Melta Bombs; Power Maul)
Veteran Squad (Troops) [Guard], 180 pts (Close Combat Weapon x7; Lasgun x4; Demolition Charge; Melta Bombs; Grenade Launcher x3; Demolitions)
1x Veteran Heavy Weapon Team [Guard] (Autocannon; Melta Bombs)
1x Gunnery Sergeant Harker [Guard]
Valkyrie Assault Carrier Squadron (Fast) [Guard], 140 pts
1x Valkyrie [Guard] (Multilaser; Multiple Rocket Pods x2; Heavy Bolter Sponsons x2)
Hydra Flak Tank Battery (Heavy) [Guard], 330 pts
3x Hydra Flak Tank [Guard] (Heavy Bolter; Twin-Linked Hydra Auto-Xannons x2; Extra Armour; Hunter-killer Missile; Pintle Storm Bolter) {New Models I want to try}
Guardsman Morbo (Elite) [Guard], 65 pts
Basically the plan is to put the Long Fangs and the Rune Priest in the ADL. Being supported by the Land Speeders and Hydras while the Grey Hunters work on taking objectives. Harker’s Squad is there for late game objective Stealing.
Opinions?

I'm in more of a position to comment on guard than SW so I'll do just that:
You'll want a vendetta not a Valkyrie: adds more AT and anti-flier punch
You don't need anywhere near that many hydras: you already have a quad gun and once you upgrade to a Valkyrie you'll be fine for flier defence. Keep one if you want but the lack of interceptor REALLY hurt these guys in 6th.
Lose the grenade launchers: they are by far the worst special weapon in the codex - take plasma or melta on the vets.
Lose the lord commissar: you are better off with a CCS with 4 special weapons given the fact that the buffs the commissar gives are almost obsolete if you have no blob.
I love marbo, good choice.
Harker becomes even better if you take camo cloaks btw, as I means they get +2 to cover saves IIRC
Seems legit from what I can tell though Automatically Appended Next Post: Also I would consider going easy on the upgrades for the rune priest, as you have said he will be sitting at the back. Consider putting the grey hunters in drop pods to get them close more quickly, and I'd be tempted to say take ML on the long fangs, with maybe one or two lascannons if you must. Also take a 6 man squad to allow for 5 heavy weapons.
I don't know enough about SW to comment any more than that. Not a bad list ATM btw, despite my comments.

Well I have done a few tweaks, for right now I am keeping the Hydra’s as they are brand new and I want to give them a try. Beside they do horrible things to infantry and light vehicles.
As far as the Valkurie it had to do more with the Cool Factor over the Firepower, but I exchanged it for my AC-130 Vendetta.
As far as the Grenade Launchers, they have served me well, the High Strength helps me wound and the Frags do well vs. Swarms and Hordes.
If I was not trying out the Hydra’s I might go with a Drop Pod List.

The thing with the hydras is they aren't actually very good as they are only BS1 at ground targets! The grenade launchers are not a good choice compared to others... Considering it's a vet squad, you always (ALWAYS) want plasma or melta, as they are both better strength and AP, and grenade launcher frag mode will only ever get 1 (2 if you are lucky) enemy models.

i play SW, so the rune priest, which is his role in the list? if your gonna use it to kill T5, hence the saga you give him, hes gonna be another stain in the foot or wheel (bikes) of the enemy, with only the PA, he gonna die so easy, so, if you plane to send it to the fight give him runic armor, to join gray hunters and travel in the rhino, or give him a TDA, for the 5++, so, if gonna be a front line character i recommend to generate biomancy powers, if you get endurance, the unit where he is, its going to become a monster unit, in this way, there is no sense for the chooser, so left it.
If you gonna leave him behind, you could only give a runic armor and generate divination, to join a long fang squad and give them prescidence, buy the chooser and man the quad gun with him (BS5 and 4 twin linked shots, its a win )
About the gray hunters, don't make them so expensive, you can drop the power fist and instead give them power axes, they don need the plasma pistol, its better the plasma gun, if you concern are the heavy vehicles, then make a unit or two, with two melta guns, the tanks gonna blow beautifully , the mark and the wolf banner are must have, for the close combat, so, if you put you gh in drop pods, i recommend the melta guns, the power axe is optional, but i prefer to leave them only with the mark and brass hairy balls jejeje
the land speeder, they aren't going to make it to the end of the game, in a SW list, they are suicidal, so the best option is used like that, put them only the assault cannon to the three to make some slaughter between the infantry and deep strike them, or put to the three a multi melta, so bye bye enemy heavys
if not, the heavy bolter is enough vs light infantry
finally, the long fangs, everybody play them only with ml, but i prefer a combination of lascanon and plasma cannon, to deal that pesky Sv2+
that is my recomendation, son play and test what work for you, and more importantly, look against who you are playing, to manage to counter their strong points

Mostly he is for the Presences with my Long Fangs and to man the Quad Gun. I am still up in the air about the Saga, mostly its because I keep getting that tunneling Nid in my face, maybe I will just go with some Melta-Bombs.

The two thing I keep finding myself needing is a Power Fist for dealing with MC's and AP2 Shots. I have thought about a Power Axe, but personally I like the Fist, also I love the model holding the Standard with the Standard.

Actualy they have never failed me with this configuration,
finally, the long fangs, everybody play them only with ml, but i prefer a combination of lascanon and plasma cannon, to deal that pesky Sv2+
actually I only own two Long Fang Packs. When I dived into the Bit Box for Heavy Weapons I came up with 7 Missile Lauchers [1-2 were Scout ones], 2 Las Cannons and a Scout Heavy Bolter. So I put 5 Missile Launchers into one [thinking it would become my go to Pack] and the rest into the 2nd Pack. After a few games the 2nd Pack was proving to be the most useful one, now its my Got to Long Fang Pack.

Imperial Guard FAQ Amendments section:
"Page 51 - Hydra Flak Tank, Hydra Autocannon.
Add the Skyfire special rule to the Hydra Autocannon's type."
They have skyfire, but not interceptor, and as such are only BS1 at targets other than skimmers, FMC, and flyers. Automatically Appended Next Post: MASSIVE nerf in 6th, although they got better at what they are SUPPOSED to do. Good against dark eldar or cron air, though.

OK, so it's under the Skyfire Rule in the BRB.

if the mc nid is your problem, use a lone wolf with terminator armor, power fist and storm shield, if you have the points with thunder hammer, then when the nid blow the ground, pray to miss or your long fangs survive, then shoot all against him and if survive the missile volley then charge with the lone wolf, he is dead already
with the grey hunters use a unit of 3 wolf guard, split it between the grey hunters and the long fangs, with terminator armor and powerfist the three with combi-plasma, they are 144 points, you have 2 attack base of power fist and a Sv of 2+ and 5++, if they are footslogging then use a unit of ten grey hunter, if they are going in drop pods then make it of 8 grey hunters, with one plasma gun, mark and the standard, there no need of the plasma pistol, it is really expensive for one shot at 12", its better the gun, for ten points you get one shoto at 24" and rapid fire at 12", if you fell like, give them the power axe or a power maul to the unit for 2 atttacks of s6, or three on the charge at i4
