Subject: Doom of Malantai, Cataclysm, Exploding Transport, Wounds gained?

So last night I played a game where my tyranids were pitted against my Traitor Guardsmen (a buddy is playing my armies against myself, I'm improving my lists a lot). At one point the Irishmin (Doom O'Malanti) podded in, sucked some souls and S6 blasted the side armor of a chimera causing a wreck (I don't know why people don't like cataclysm...). So his power cost him 2 wounds and then ratlings finished him off next round (I rolled 1,1,2,2 for 3++). But, in hindsight i was wondering.... When the transport exploded the occupants suffered 7 unsaved wounds. So, does doom o'malantel get those wounds since he was responsible for their occurrence or is the transport itself the source? I don't think this is just a one time situation; this could happen in many of my games. Nothing in FAQ. Thoughts?

I would say no, as the Doom did not directly cause the Wounds.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

The transport was the source of those wounds.

Agreed. Absorb Life requires it to inflict wounds, not to cause something else to inflict wounds.

I'd disagree here.
The Dark Eldar requires a unit with Power from Pain to kill a unit to get a Pain Token. It was FAQ'd to say that if they blew a transport and killed the whole unit within, that's a pain token.
They aren't directly killing the unit inside, so i'd imagine doom would get those wounds as well.

I was about to quote this too.
Power from Pain will give a unit a pain token if they wipe a unit out directly or indirectly.
I think the Doom would work the same, depending on the wording in the codex of course.

Absorb Life requires Doom to inflict wounds.
How is Power from Pain worded?

Power from Pain: "Whenever a Dark Eldar unit with this rule destroys a non-vehicle enemy unit, it immediately gains a 'pain token'."
Absorb Life: "... for every unsaved wound it inflicts."
Tough call but I would probably give the Doom the life based off the Dark Eldar FAQ.

Here's the FAQ: Q: If a unit with the Power from Pain special rule destroys an enemy unit, does it gain a pain token no matter how the unit was destroyed? For example the resultant explosion from shooting at a vehicle wipes out an enemy unit. (p25) A: Yes. Iranna.

I see the similarity but I don't think it's similar enough to tie the two together, and the FAQ is very narrowly worded.

I'd say he is indirectly causing Wounds, just as the dark elder unit is indirectly killing a unit.
Also, as a bizzare scenario...
Doom casts enfeeble on a bike/jetbike unit. They fail a DT test and lose a wound from this. Does doom get a wound back?

If you give him wounds from an exploding vehicle, then yes he'd get one from any indirect action.

So it'd depend on whether him causing wounds via an indirect action is deemed right or wrong.

Not quite the same thing. The wounds from a vehicle explosion are caused due to the attack. The dangerous terrain test isn't caused by enfeeble but by the choice of the owner moving the model.

I'd say that, due to it being a grey area, you should probably just go with him getting wounds from direct attacks.
It'll most likely make your games go much smoother.

A: Yes.
Power from Pain says "destroys a...unit," while Life Leech is a rule about the Doom ["it"] causing "unsaved wounds."
These two things do seem to be different. The DE did not cause unsaved wounds--the DE caused the unit to be destroyed due to unsaved wounds caused by the transport explosion.
In the same way, the Doom did not cause unsaved wounds--the transport caused unsaved wounds.

From the wording of Absorb Life the Doom has to inflict the wounds in order to gain wounds.
