As I'm still trying to find an army to get into 40k with I find myself drawn between pre-heresy Emperor's Children (which is what I'd really love) and Orks. However, since I'm not too inclined to spend an obnoxious amount on Forgeworld, I'm starting to lean towards Orks.

Since I'm new to 40k, I'm not sure on the viability of this, but after reading a bit, this seemed to be the right direction to go in for an Ork army.

My favourite list uses 34 Ork Bikes. They are awesome units to run with a Dakkagun and a charge. I have never understood Nob Bikers unless you want lots of Klaws to do the dirty gubbins work. For your one unit of Nob bikers I have more of that in regular bikes. That is my line of logic and a 34 Bike charge backing up 2 wagons and a pair of Dakkajets is far scarier than a couple units of nob bikers that will get obliterated during their approach.

This is my doctrine for good Orky bike waagh!

HQ:
Warboss: Bike, PK, squig
6 Ork Bikers
1 Nob biker - PK

Wazzdakka Gutsmek
6 Ork Bikers
1 Nob Biker - PK

Troops:
6 Ork Bikers
1 Nob Biker - PK

6 Ork Bikers
1 Nob Biker - PK

Fast:
Dakkajet - 3 supashootas, RPJ, Flyer Ace

Dakkajet - 3 supashootas, RPJ, FLyer Ace

2 Deffkoptas - 2 TL rokkits, 2 buzzsaws

Heavy:
Battlewagon - RPJ, rolla

Battlewagon - RPJ, rolla

Now with my list, the wagons really are there for line of sight blocking because once my boys reach melee it is game over on the charge for whatever I smash into.

The Bosses will either flank or shadow the wagons, on turn 2 I unleash death. Dakkaguns go to work, wagons go to work (if they still work). Jets come in and Dakka some too. Once I am in melee my boyz have no fear of ranged attacks and Nobs will make sure the enemy leaders die a horrible pain related Nob based death.

Now to let you know, using 'eavy armor is worthless to a Biker. The model/unit recieves a 4+ cover save due to the smoke cloud rule. Cybork works nicely so please enjoy that.

I thought they got 4+ standard armour as well?

Also I only count 24 bikers and two biker HQ on that list?

I'm actually leaning towards a more diverse list like the one I listed now, although I appreciate the feedback on the all bike list. Any suggestions I can get on the list I posted? I'll probably put up an updated version with a few changes (no eavy armouf nobs. Too used to fantasy where the armour just furthers the save!)

For simple, competitive Orks, you just have to tick four boxes.

Shoota Boys [x]
Nob Bikers [x]
Lootas [x]
Dakkajets [x]

Considering your list is entirely these things, I imagine it will be pretty good.

I'd drop one warboss and a nob biker mob for a mek with a KFF, two battlewagons for your boyz and a powerklaw (or at least a BC if you want to keep your initiative) on the warboss. If you have points to spare after that just add another mob of vanilla warbikers with a PK nob and stick the warboss in there and you have pretty much the punchingpower of a nob biker mob for alot less points.

After dropping the eavy armour on the nobs and adjusting to a few new ideas, I've come up with 2 new lists. The first is more akin to the original, while the second one is taking on BobZoid's idea.

Which of these would work better?

My only major question would be: Is it possible to run warbikers as your troop and still be somewhat competitive? I see a lot about needing at least some sort of numbers for Orks, but I was hoping to get a somewhat low count model army, and I love the idea of speed.

Uh, YES. I can say this because my Nob biker mob completely crushes everything I go up against, and I only have a unit of three so far. They rarely last until the end of the game but if you send them up against something that needs to be taken out (and is ground-based, anyway) they will destroy. One caveat: you will need to take PKs with them, or at least a couple per unit. Once they get stuck in, especially against other troops, they'll help enormously.

I wouldn't suggest an ALL bike army, because you'll want some foot soldiers for taking and objectives (stock boyz/grots do this well). But if you can afford all the models (holy $$$) then I would say a bike-focused army would be incredibly fun.

Theres at least one guy on here who reckons all-bikes is a fantastic army. I'm not convinced myself as of it (I want to be, because I don't like using hordes of boys), though I do love to have a few of them on the table.

Response to the last 2 you posted:
List 2: No. Just 2 vehicles on the ground wont be too hard to kill, they've got large sides. The mek doesn't provide that secure cover and there are too few units to benefit from it. Also fail to see who will ride in it. Lootas? Or shootas, you need to drop one guy if you want the KFF in there though. Flyboss is situationally useful, but an easy 30 points that could go elsewhere.

List 1: Only 4 big choppas can be taken in the nob biker unit because the painboy cannot take any upgrades other than cybork body and orderlies. Overall looks good, but a few things I would change.
Shootas - drop the rokkits and get big shootas. Rokkits are too unreliable and the nob bikers and dakkajets can deal to vehicles a lot better. Keep the boys focused on infantry as preferably you dont want the nob bikers tied up against large blobs.
With the 20 points gained from the rokkits, and 10 points from the painboys' big choppas you have to drop, get an attack squig on each warboss. Another S10 is too good to leave out.
I would loose the last 4 big choppas in each nob unit, and 1 combi-skorcha for another klaw in the unit. With the warboss attached, 3 klaws will handle anything and if he leaves, 2 S9 klaws will be enough. 1 may not be. This makes the big choppas not so necessary and with the others having +1A now and still S5 on a charge, they can deal to infantry fine. 2 skorchas in each unit will generally suffice.
And that's it.

Spoiler:
Warboss - warbike, klaw, cybork, squig 150
Nobs - 410
6 cyborks, painboy
2 klaws, 2 combi-skorchas
banner, bosspole
warbikes

If your attack is going too well, you have walked into an ambush

The easy way is always mined

I personally would go with list one, as I'm just not convinced that the battlewagon is actually any good because of all those damn Lascannons everywhere.

And pretty much Rahxephon nailed what I'd suggest here. Ditch those rokkits and ditch them hard

Take maxed out Allies as the Ork codex is rubbish, the so bad it's better to take grots then shoota boyz

I think OP is perfectly capable of choosing the army he or she wants to play.

Thanks for the advice rahxephon and Dakkamite! Made the suggested changes and it's still at exactly 2k (But I'm sure you already knew that), so I'll definitely have to get buying some models! Thanks for all the tips and advice.

If you have anything else that might help me (such as which units should be targeting what), I'd greatly appreciate that as well.
