Termagants came first, although they were originally called Hunter-Killers.

ter·ma·gant (tûrm-gnt)
n.
A quarrelsome, scolding woman; a shrew.
adj.
Shrewish; scolding.
[From Middle English Termagaunt, imaginary Muslim deity portrayed as a violent and overbearing character in medieval mystery plays, alteration of Tervagant, from Old French.]

Termagant is the modern English form, making it technically more correct. However, Hormagant and Gants lack gravitas as pronounced words and gaunt is more English than gant, which is the older form;

gaunt (gônt)
adj. gaunt·er, gaunt·est
1. Thin and bony; angular. See Synonyms at lean2.
2. Emaciated and haggard; drawn.
3. Bleak and desolate; barren.
[Middle English, perhaps from Old French gant, possibly of Scandinavian origin.]

So, we have Termagants and Hormagaunts for this reason; Termagant is a real word for a shrewish or irritating woman (All Tyranids are canonically female except the Hive Tyrant) and Termagants are barely a nuisance in the grand scheme of the hive, whilst Hormagaunts...

Horm-,
prefix meaning "an impulse, to urge or stimulate":

Hormagaunt - a stimulation to be bony. They're Termagants that have their fingerbones encouraged to grow into talons instead of being symbiotically linked with fleshborers.

"That time I only loaded the cannon with powder. Next time, I will fill it with jewels and diamonds and they will cut you to shrebbons!" - Nogbad the Bad.

The more I think about it, the more I think moving to a somewhat dawn of war 2 type system would be better.
