Quite a few members of my gaming group have expressed a dislike of the (supposedly) anti assault direction 6th ed took, and much discussion has been had about how they would like to see certain rules and concepts work differently form their current state, in order to bring 'balance back' as it were. Most of these were pretty rubbish ideas but one idea, while I don't necessarily agree with it, it does seem interesting.

Fluff arguement
Basically, the whole idea with Outflanking is that the unit comes on the board from just out the field of battle to join the fight from another direction, but for some reason when they get there they are forced to stand there scratching their backsides for a turn before they have the wherewithal to remember "Aha! I'm supposed to ASSAULT things! It's all so clear now!" and get a chance to assault.

Now if every other unit that has moved that turn gets to assault, surely it makes sense thematically to have the dudes moving on from the board edge assault? It shouldn't matter from a THEMATIC sense where they are moving and assaulting from.

Rule

If a unit makes an assault move in the same turn that they enter the board via Outflank, then the unit being assaulted gets to make resolve Overwatch at full BS (rather than snapshots)

Now the thematic argument here is: in the game world, the view of the unit being charged would not suddenly stop at the edge of the board, they would be able to see things coming towards them from further away than the confines of the board. And if they saw the assaulters coming from further away, surely they would have better time to prepare and aim at the dudes charging towards them (hence the full BS overwatch)

Balance wise, It shouldn't favour the either side greatly, as 1) the side you Outflank on is randomised anyway 2) Random charges could still mean the assault fails 3) the increased threat of the SuperOverwatch will mean risking a charge is still a risky prospect, even if the assault unit would tear the other unit to shreds if they got into base contact 4) While they might get a pummeling from overwatch the assaulting unit wouldn't have to sit there getting shot at by the rest of the army for a turn before doing something meaningful

Now I'm sure there is something that has been overlooked, as I'm sure you'll quickly point out, but do you think that this would be a balanced, fairly and more importantly thematic way to deal with asaulty outflankers?

Much rather like

A unit may assault from outflank if they forgo there shooting phase. and let it be a rule for certain types of units.

If a unit of blood crazy berserkers came running from out of no where, i don't think the defenders would react any faster than if they where charging from the front

Or an unit quietly sneaking in from behind, you know, like how you'd imagine an infiltration unit to be like. Not like the one we currently have that scream, shout, sing and play crappy music loudly on their pooptastic smart phone as they run up from behind, possibly shouting "We're totally not here!! We're stealthing!!!!!".

I like the idea from a previous thread, bit convoluted but something like...

Outflanking unit who didn't shoot on the turn which they arrived, enemy unit can only fire snapshots at them in the following turn.

This way, the outflanking pure-assault units wouldn't get wiped off the board as quickly as they would now, but at the same time, give the shooting gunline units a chance to move away.
