I have 0 defense against flyers with this list and I accept that. I don't play against a lot of flyers where I play.

There is no defensible reason to play RW without a Standard of Devastation. You're relentless; it's a salvo 4 party all the time with a 36" effective range.
Lose the land speeders; you don't need their anti-horse with the SoD.
Sammael- 200
RWCS x5: 1 RWGL, apothecary, SoD- 295
TROOPS
RAS x6- 161
Attack Bike: MM- 55

Outflank all the melta. Keep the 24 shooty bikes, the command squad and Sammy together. Have the black knights hunt big nasty's like riptides down. Vicious.

Dreadnoughts: Why? Slow and fragile.
Land Speeders: Useless when you have the SoD.
Land Speeder Vengeance: This is a joke, right?
You need two RCS, one with Ravenwing Standard, one with SoD.
Take a Librarian on bike and roll telepathy, it's trollface.

Having never used Salvo before could you explain it to me. From what I gather my boltguns can fore 4 shots at 12" and 4 shots at 24".

Salvo 2/4 normally means you get 2 shots at 12" if you move and 4 shots at 24" if you are stationary. Bikes have relentless which means they always count as stationary. So your six man RAS squads get 24 shots every turn that are twin linked and can move 12" and still assault. Makes for a very, very powerful force.

OK, I re-read the BRB and now understand what your saying. I normally play Deathwing but I have the bikes to do Ravenwing so I gotta try this out. Here is the list I'm gonna try out Saturday to get a feel for Ravenwing:
HEADQUATERS
Sammael on Corvex (jetbike) - 200
Librarian - 150
w/ Bike, Force Axe, Power Field Generator, and Mastery Level 2
Ravenwing Command Squad - 295
5 bikes with Apothecary and SoD
Ravenwing Command Squad - 230
5 bikes with Apothecary
TROOPS
Ravenwing bike squad - 164
5 bikes w/ 2 Plasma guns

Ravenwing bike squad - 187
4 bikes w/ 2 Melta guns
Attackbike w/ Multi-melta
Ravenwing bike squad - 187
4 bikes w/ 2 Melta guns
Attackbike w/ Multi-melta
FAST ATTACK
Black Knights - 182
4 bikers
Darkshroud - 100
w/ Assault Cannon
TOTAL - 1999
I'll give this list a whirl.

Lose some special weapons or the dark shroud and get a RW banner on the second command squad. Auto pass hit and run.

Thanks for all the suggestions but I think I'll stick with this for now. I don't think the auto-pass of hit and run is worth the points but I will find out this weekend. If it is then I'll add it and drop something that was under-performing.
I was clueless about how to build a Ravenwing army before but thanks for all your comments. I feel a lot better about my army now. I used to run a SM all bike army cause I like to ride myself but it didn't have near the flexibility or strength of this army.

Why 5 man squads?
Take man man squads so you can combat squad em.

The only reason not to take the Ravenwing Banner is if you only run one Command squad. If you have a second Command Squad, it's very cheap and therefore highly recommended. Remember, you also get an extra die for your Hit and Run movement, and get +1 to Combat Resolution too.

For 15 points auto hit and run is magic. 4d6 Hit and Run is amazing, but you don't get combat res, that's only from the Darkshroud.
I don't bother with special weapons on my Ravenwing squads since they'll be shooting their bolters. Just get more bikes or add in an LRC.

I'll second Asmodai on the lack of special weapons. The only situation I run special weapons is 2 meltaguns in a squad of 3 bikes, usually with an Attack Bike with Multi-melta tagging along; and all outflanking.

You do get +1 to combat resoultion if the squad with the banner is in the combat itself. Check page 66 of the codex, first paragraph.
As for special weapons, I'm new at this, but aren't they a cheap way to add some versatility? I've done the math, and even assuming the SoD, Meltaguns add to your killing power against both MEQ and TEQ opponents. In contrast, Flamers are really cheap and situationally useful. You can get a whole army's worth of Flamers for the price of one Attack Bike.

The problem is, you can only fire one weapon per phase. You won't often want to waste a squad's shooting phase using a meltagun on a tank; and you will never cause more wounds with a meltagun than you would with a Salvo 4 bolter; unless you're shooting at something T9.
It's more efficient to have "salvo squads" and "special squads". Salvo squads are 5-6 bikes and Special squads are 3 bikes with 2 special weapons and an attack bike IF you have the points.

I rechecked my numbers, and you are close to being correct. A Meltagun will improve your odds against MEQ with FNP, regular Terminators, and high Toughness stuff, and that's about it. And also assuming no cover. The Bolter is better against MEQ and also TH/SS Terminators.
That said, putting Meltaguns in 6 man squads gives you the option of creating the 3 man, 2 Meltagun squads you like. For example, if you happen to face an IG parking lot. And I stand by my points about Flamers. They are really cheap. You can buy 11 for the price of one Attack Bike. They are only situationally useful, but very strong in those situations, like IG Blobs on the upper levels of ruins. I also suspect they will counter some shenanigans from the new Eldar codex, although I haven't had a chance to read it yet.

I don't think anyone runs parking lot in this day and age, in any case it gets one turn of shooting before the Ravenwing are on them assaulting and krak-ing so it's not a problem.
Hmm good idea about the salvo/special squads, but that just creates target priorities for your opponent. I prefer to space out my weaponry so I have the versatility of presenting multiple threats all with the same threat potential, instead of having to rely on a single shot. And I only ever take 3 man squads because maximising the number of Sarges for precision shots/challenge fodder is important.
The most effective Ravenwing lists mix up bikes and armour, I find. Contemptor Mortis/salvo LRC with 4++ are terrifying. Black Knights assault, Bikes salvo, Armour anchors/aa.

I play against a lot of Landraiders and I love drop podding in turn 1 and taking it down with melta-armed dreadnought. Sure its a 135 point unit but worth so much more if it can destroy a 250 point unit turn 1 and make termies footslog the rest of the game.

What vehicles do you run? I don't have an Contemptors (or plan on buying any) and I have no desire to spend 250 points for salvo hurricane bolters. And I find if I only have one or two vehicles than they die quickly to all the anti-tank my opponents have. I have considered allying with Blood Angels for a fast Vindicator and a Baal Predator. Or perhaps a storm raven. I think DA have the worst fliers and I can't get myself to put either one in any of my lists. I do want some anti-air but figure I'd have to try and achieve that with my TL Storm Talons or ally in a stormraven. I've had luck killing fliers and FMC with non-skyfire units and luckily I don't face many fliers where I play. Usually just my roommate who uses 2 flyrants and 3 herpies in his nid army.
Has anyone found a use for the ravenwing champion? 5 points for a blade of caliban and a +1 WS doesn't seem like a steep price to pay even though the blade is only an unwieldy powersword with +1 str.
I plan on playing just ravenwing for a few games to get used to the different units and how they work together but I'll probably look to allies to add some vehicles in to supplement them soon. Blood Angels' fast vehicles would fit in with ravenwing rather nicely I think. Any thoughts? Also, thanks for all of the input and help. I've really neglected ravenwing for years despite my love of motorcycles.
