I've finally decided to create a tyranid army, after a long time of pondering and hesitating. Decided to start with the rippers so that I can test my color scheme before painting actually something valuable. Liking the scheme, but I'd like some ideas on how to base these?

I'm going for an ice planet effect, so probably some kind of snow, but the basic snow basing is a bit dull. Should I maybe mix some grass spots in the snow or...?

Any opinions / ideas / feedback is appreciated!

Rippers aren't valuable? I find that objectionable. Anyhow, remember the simple truths of an ice planet paint job. Your dealing with a super-reflective surface surrounding your 'nids, so use a lot of light blues and white for highlighting. Also, an easy way to create contrast is to make up some faux snow, and place some rocks coming out, and simply have your rippers coming out and climbing over that.

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

Well, I'd imagine them the least valuable part of my future army, or maybe the unit that gets the least attention, so painting them so-and-so wouldn't disturb my consciousness as much

The rock idea is good, gives the models some weight also. The bad thing about plastic models is that they are so light they can fly off with the wind...

It would also be interesting to try to make a "nuclear winter" type of environment. Probably some burnt grass underneath, then a thin layer of light snow would work for that...
