I have a rules question concerning hormagaunts with toxin sacs, that are outside synapse range.

The "Feed" rule states: "These organisms are driven by the voracious need to feed. They rampage towards the nearest prey in a frenzied attempt to sate their ravenous appetites"

I don't remember the specific entry in the rule book, but IRC, you are not allowed to charge something that you can't damage. Example: A unit with strength 3 can't charge a landraider, because they can't damage it.

In my specific example with hormagaunts, if they only have toxin sacs they can not hurt any armor value whatsoever. Would this mean that armored units are ignored when determining what the "nearest prey" is?

Thankyou

That's a fluff line - all Feed does is grant Rage now.
Rage used to require to assault the nearest enemy model, but that requirement is gone.

And just to be clear, Hormagaunt's with Toxin Sax's can still harm vehicles with a 9 rear armor.

... and I don't think there's a single vehicle in the game that has 9 AV. Maybe something FW but I doubt it somehow.

There is a very good reason why I keep my Mawloc out of Synapse range...

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Wow so being out of synapse is better than being in? That is stupid.

If you have Feed. If you have Lurk its another story.

Yes, Feed is something you want to happen now. Another attack on the charge is a good thing.

Only when that unit wants to charge into combat.

When they are just moving up being in synapse is better than being out of it, as units in Synapse are fearless.

and Fearless is a bit better now that you don't take wounds for surviving combat.

It's still weird that the tactic to try to keep them out of synapse range in some cases. I guess you could call it unleashing the hounds, but then you should be allowed to drop synapse from some units despite the range.

It's sort of like the death squad (death... something?) of the blood angels. They used to have to charge anything they could... they removed that disadvantage and to balance it out... added more attacks on the charge?

It makes no sense, making rage go from a disadvantage with an advantage affixed to it, to an enormous advantage, no disadvantages.

There are disadvantages, anything with Rage can't shoot, and as far as Tyranids go, losing Synapse often means losing Fearless, which is a huge disadvantage considering the poor leadership of non-Syanpse Tyranids.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

It depends on if you don't really care about losing the unit and/or think the extra attacks will help you win.

Where did you get this? Units with Rage can still shoot. Otherwise it'd be pointless for BA DC to have bolters/bolt pistols/plasma pistols/hand flamers/Infernus pistols etc..

He meant units with Feed that Rage can't shoot - Instinctive Behavior rules.

Ah, yes, that's part of the Instinctive Behaviour rues rather than Rage, didn't realise... It seems there aren't any disadvantages to Rage after all, though there's still disadvantages to the units with it (Death Company being unable to score, Tyranids having to be outside of Synapse and unable to shoot)

Plus some Nids with IB do not have guns anyway, like Hormagaunts.

And you should treat Death Company as an Elite unit that takes up a troop slot. (I.E. Does not score, but does deny and they are more costly than most infantry troop choices, so they are more like a Elite in those aspects).
