Greetings Dakka!

Now, I know this is the 40k Army Lists Forum, but I could not see a place to ask for advice on lists that are NOT made. If this belongs somewhere else, please direct the swarm to the nearest exit and pat it on the back for trying.

Recently I have started up collecting with the Table Top gaming in mind rather than painting and modeling I have been doing for around 4 years. ( Although I have a general idea of the rules, I am by no means able to recite or make educated guesses)

So far I have *AHEM*:
33 Hormagaunts
41 Termagants (( assembled with Fleshborers only))
18 Genestealers (( With Rending Claws))
6 Ripper Swarm
6 Warriors (( 2 built with Scything Talons and Deathspitters, the other four un-built))
1 Carnifex (( unbuilt))
1 Hive Tyrant (( unbuilt))

The Hormagaunts, Termagants and Genestealers are all built and based, BUT unpainted, so if minor changes need to be made, I can attempt to convert them.
The Ripper Swarms after casually flicking through sites seem pointless, but I have them if I need them.
The 2 built warriors have Deathspitters and Scything Talons because they where made in 5th edition, unsure what to equip the rest with for 6th since I lack the rulebook.
-Carnifex seems to be hated on by people, but I got it for an insanely low price, and I have always wanted to have one since they where released! (shh... I'm sure I can make it work somehow)
- The Tyrant.... I have no clue as to what to arm them with, what would be best... anything... haha

Since I have given you that, perhaps some more information is needed.
I have two main opponents:
1 - Tau (who seems to be wanting to use Commander Farsight)
2 - DA Ravenwing

- With a possible Chaos Space Marine third player joining in. ( I don't know him, he is a friend of a friend type association)
So for all intends and purposes, players 1 + 2 are the enemy.

I was trying to figure out ( since low points are going to be used initially to get used to the game) what would be best to use/ build from what I have/ buy next.

- I want to get a Tervigon purely from a stylistic painting stance, would this be a good way to go?
- What should I arm the 4 Tyranid Warriors with? are Deathspitters okay?
-Should I make a Tyranid Prime from the spare warriors? If so, what would be best to use with it?
- Carnifex is going to be a Dakkafex, but if people have any other ideas, please give them!
-Tyrant... I have no idea... Advice?

Could you brilliant people here advise me on what to use/ build?

Thank you for your time

~ Nidception

Since you will be facing 2 marine player, find a way to get ap3 weapons. Luckly, tyranids have so many mc to do ap2 and can smash land raiders. at str 10 you can instand death & deny fnp for plague marines. Consider taking fmc to deal with heldrakes. My drake was one shot down my psychic powers.

Put wings and Devourers on that Flyrant! Its really the best loadout for them.

Based on list building with what you have I suggest this
1) Kit with poison or toxin depending on your meta of infantry or tanks...never take a brood under 20 models.
2) 2 squads of 20...no upgrades if you have the tervigon...otherwise kit with poison.
3) Lose the rending claws...now either play them as 2 ymgarl squads...or...get 2 broodlords
4) Turn into Sky Slashers or shelve them...sky slashers can be mean with toxin, adrenals
5) Use as you wish...only ever take 2 upgrades on these maximum...go higher and points vs survivability isnt worth it, turn one into a lashwhip, bonesword, scytal, regen prime
6) Convert this into a Tervigon (Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs, Catalyst)
7) Give this Wings (2 x Devourers) Normally I find this boring but you'll need it when just starting

I would recommend getting 2 zoanthropes or hive guard soon.

@ Filch - Thanks for the advice on VS Marines and Fliers. I will definitely use these if the SM player takes a land raider. ((He is using a Landspeeder with AV 14 for a fact, but other than that, not sure if he has a Landraider. Whirlwind definitely!)
Ouch with the Heldrakes! I think having read up on fliers a bit more, it seems there is virtually no list without Heldrakes.

@ Jifel - I have been seeing that combination alot! 1000 Flyants can't be wrong! Thanks for the feedback!

@ Ductvader - Thanks for the fairly comprehensive advice on my model counts!
A few questions regarding the upgrades.
1) A Rending Claws such a problem when compared to Scything Talons? - I know that Rending seems to have been Nerfed since 5th edition, but I have not got the rules to find out why. It used to be great didn't it?
2) I wanted to get a Broodlord so thats good to know. I am going to get some of them. Also, Ymargls- I like the sound of them, are they worth it over Genestealers?
3) Shame about the Ripperswarms.- Ah well, I might used them for scenery/ part of an objective or something in that case!
4) 2 upgrades max and turn one into a Prime. Got it. ( Fancied making a prime)
5) D'aw poor Carnifex- So it is not worth taking it as an Actual Carni?
6) I was planning on using this set up, but was torn between the others since I have little practical experience in fielding any. Lots of people advise this set up, they can't all be wrong!

- hmm , the only issue I have with these two is that their Finecast. ( I don't harbor a particular grudge against this, but in the past I have had not so great experiences casts.) I will see about getting hold of some! Thanks!

1) Rending is about the same in 6th...hormagaunts arent going for specialty wounds though...they just want to pile the wounds on...keeping these guys next to a tyrant with old adversary can be mean
2) I wanted to get a Broodlord so thats good to know. I am going to get some of them. Also, Ymargls- I like the sound of them, are they worth it over Genestealers? I mispoke...rending is stock on these guys.
3)
4)
5) At this point no. When you have 2, give them both 2 x devourers and wreak havoc. I guess a single one could be made stock and put in a pod. I personally run 9 fexes on occassion...I like them as opposed to most people
Screamer Fexes, stock with bio plasma, is not particularly effective, but my favorite. The FW Stonecrusher fex is a good solo fex.
6) I personally believe Swarmlord is the best tyrant loadout. But a stock 2+ save tyrant with 3 lash guard is amazing too.

@ Ductvader - Thanks for the reply and affirmations.

I love the Carnifex models personally, but thats an Aesthetic preference. Also, with a new codex rumored to be on the way (Thank you FLGS) They might be worth more in the next Codex.

If I was taking DakkaFex's, I was going to wait till I had bought a Tervigons to use the pair of arms as a representative of 2 twin-linked devourers. -That said, it could be better off as a stock. I know the Tau player freaks at Carnifex's more-so than others, so he might provide a neat distraction VS him particular.

- I was planning on making some of the pods, which if not used AS pods, could also function as a terrain piece if wanted.

- I was considering the Swarmlord, but, I suppose I am afraid of him being knocked out before his time. ( I am mostly vs heavy plasma and Tau Farsight. )

Also, thanks! I will be sure to PM you if that's the case!

4+ MCs wil scare most Tau players...until you run into all suits.

The Swarmlord should wait until 1500+ points.

As for codecies, I and many others see something like this happening. And I am being very general, in no way shape or form am I claiming to KNOW this.

Codex Marines
Orks
Imperial Guard
Tyranids
