Hi,
I'm looking at getting back into 40k and love the tyranids stories.
What will I be best buying.
I'm thinking mass swarms with some big gribble combat troops.

Any tips are welcome

Ymgarl gene stealers as well, my opponents fear them more than any other unit!

And lots of Termagants to go with the Tervigon.

Personally I love using Ymgarl Genestealers, although there is a bit of luck involved picking the right piece of terrain to appear in. Their ability to adapt to opponents is very useful and fun too.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

Currently Termagants and Tervigons are the way to go, with winged Hive Tyrants as HQs, supported by units like Zoanthropes, the Doom of Malan'tai, Hive Guard, Ymgarl Genestealers, Gargoyles, Trygons & Biovores... I think I may have just listed every competitive unit in the codex apart from a Swarmlordstar. However, all the rumours indicate that a new codex is coming our way soon, so things may change.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

The core, nay the entirety of your army should be made up of flying hive tyrants, tervigons, a doom of malan'tai, trygons (I like primes and run two) term against, and hive guard.

I'd just like to counter with the example that a friend of mine is running a list that includes 6 brood lords and the death leaper, he is currently 2-1 at a local tournament. The one loss was against a "traditional" tyranid list and he would have won if the game ended turn 5.

Tyranids are still competitive (around here at least) and fun to play. Try to think up a list using stuff people normally don't. It might take people by surprise.

Anectdotal evidence is anectdotal, try a more scientific study on the matter. Lab coats optional.

Eh, I've already stated multiple times that everything I post is the result of either theoryhammer or personal experience.

And if you really want science I'll dredge up a link to that "markerlight effectiveness study" I posted in tactics a while back, but I don't think anyone actually wants that.

You could fight really for most options in the codex for usability. Personally, I recommend you do not grab Pyrovores or Harpies, simply because the first, even I can't figure out a decent use for, and that's saying something. The second one, I haven't yet built up some conversions to test if for if it is actually usable on any basis. Just choose your poison. Monstrous Horde, Scuttling Tide, Flying Circus, mixed. Most of the Monstrous Horde lists revolve around how many Tervigons you can spam with Flyrants. Scuttling Tide is quite naturally how many 'Gants, 'Gaunts, and 'Goyles you can field. Flying Circus is normally a couple of Flyrants, some fast attack options, and whatever else you can spam. And mixed is generally pretty much any combination.

This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

Hah! We just had confirmation from the hive mind itself that pyrovores are useless. The Norn Queen that spawned them must have been slightly wrong in the head.

On that subject, my LGS has about 4 boxes of pyrovores on the 40k shelf, hidden behind all the other stuff. I'm pretty sure they've been there since the Tyranid codex released. I kind of want to buy one, take it home and paint it, like adopting a puppy you see in the animal shelter or something.

In our defense, we both were a little out of it. One of our nearby zoanthropes had invented this new drink called Biohol and before we knew it, we started talking from across the synaptic link. One thing led to another and in about 10 minutes when we sobered up, we realized we'd made a mistake. But by that point, you try telling 16 billion newborn organisms that they were mistakes.

But on a serious matter, snag me one of those boxes. I believe in supporting a codex fully and having at least 1 of every model.

Im trying to at least switch my army up a little.

Im gonna start running a single tervi with 2 units of 20 Hormagaunts and see what happens. Maybe a big stealer blob with a Broodlord too as I love those guys.

I also love Ymgarls as mentioned. I think I might try 2 units of 5 with the Doom as my Elites now. Mainly as my Zoans never agree with me and my Hive Guard have been lackluster lately.

I assure you the Harpy is very usable. Im in the process of finishing me converted Harpy. In my recent game against DA, it took out 4 Termies and half a Tac squad with shooting, and killed another Termie and BELIAL in close combat. And thats Belial with his Fleshbane sword as well! It would have killed more termies but they would not roll one's no matter how often I asked them to. I got 5 dead on hits with Large blasts on a 11 man squad of Deathwing with Belial (Cluster Spines, Stranglethorn Cannon, 3 Spore Mine Cyst hits) causing 55 hits, which became a pretty tasty 41 wounds. And they only failed 4 saves!!
I think with less luck on my opponents part it would have wrecked additional face.

And against 4+ save units (Necron/Fire warriors), it would have been excellent!
