Subject: Good Value Primer?

Hello all! I recently purchased an airbrush and am loving it! I do have a question though... Can I use this primer in my airbrush? Thinned out of course...
http://www.amazon.com/Vallejo-Val73602-Acrylic-Polyurethane-Primer/dp/B00B3S574W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371988763&sr=8-1&keywords=vallejo+black+primer
or
http://www.amazon.com/Vallejo-Val74601-Acrylic-Polyurethane-Primer/dp/B00AMB88IS/ref=pd_sim_sbs_t_6
These seem like a really good value vs the vellejo model air primer... I am new to airbrushing so if anyone can verify that these work... I feel like a newb all over again with this airbrush... Thanks!
Todd

Its a point of discussion I believe, but those primers don't even need to be thinned for airbrushing imho I really love them, never looked back to my canned primers they're available in 200ml as well

Right on! I purchased a bunch of the Vellejo model air primers but as soon as they are gone, I will purchase a large 200ml of these Vellejo primers. The value just seems to be better. The model air primer has been nice though since I am new to airbrushing but I got the hang of thinning and stuff now... This airbrushing really is unbelievable how much better it is compared to using dry brushing and rattle can primers!

Yep I love the Vallejo polyurethane primers. They have a long curing time though, so it's best to leave them for a day (some people need to leave them longer) before continuing to paint. If you don't, some people have had the primer scratch. There as a dakka discussion in this subforum iirc if you want to search it up.
But yes - it's great for airbrush and great value in the 200 ml bottles. I premixed some drying retarder in since I"ll always use it in the airbrush and dry tip is irritating. I forget if I thinned it, but the mix works really well for me. I've used grey and white and they're both great.

I use the vallejo polyurethane primer as well but I brush-on my minis with it. Its a great primer. I usually wait at least a week for the primer to cure onto the mini before painting on top of it.

Waiting a whole week? The Vellejo model air primer seems ready in about 30-40 minutes... Is there any way to speed it up?

Yup those are what you want. They come in a variety of colours. You do need to let them cure properly (I find overnight is fine for the most part). You can paint on them after about 30 minutes depending on conditions, but be aware that the primer won't have fully adhered, and you are in effect painting on a thin skin, and that your paintwork can then stop the underlying layer curing properly. Weak finish can result!
Be aware that (IIRC) VMA 'grey primer' isn't. It's 'grey primer' coloured paint, not an actual primer.

Don't tell me that! In my newb-ness to airbrushing I picked up like 5 vials of Vellejo model air primer Mainly cause Les Bursley plugs it in all of his paint videos that I've been watching... I have been using it and letting it cure up for 30-40 minutes or so... Looks like I may have to try out a bunch of products until I build a preference... But $$$ is the main reason I am shopping around...

I said IIRC... I've not used it myself,so it's second hand info. I'll check it out next time I buy paint.

YES! I use them and I am VERY happy with the results. note that while you can paint over it (with an airbrush) when surface dry, as others have suggested, I would wait at least a day or so for it to fully cure before handling the model too much.
best of luck

Thanks guys! I will post up some airbrush project pics as soon as I can! Thanks for all the helpful feedback! I definately love being able to get feedback. In my local gam ing group, I am the only one aspiring to improve my paint portion of my hobby so advice on painting is not readily available. I really do like this forum and all the knowledge/experience everyone is willing to share!
