The eldar codex has been out for long enough for people to get a good feel for it, and I was just wondering how it is. I liked playing Dark Eldar a little while ago, but the models were too hard to assemble for me, so I quit them and started Deathwing. Now the new DA book I found rather lackluster for the huge price tag, so for those of you eith the Eldar book, is it worth it?

I think it's a great book, I've played 6 games now with a variety of different lists. There's lots of options and a lot of valid choices in each slot. Much like the Tau list I think the internal balance is excellent (with the exception of the odd duff unit like Banshees)

Is there any one clearly dominant way to play? I know you said it has a lot of valid choices in each slot, butdo any really stand out?

Then you don't want anything to do with the eldar. The dark eldar plastic kits were all new, improved kits upon release. The eldar troop models in plastic are ancient kits that do not go together very well. The aspects are all in finecast which has its own problems. The only kits the eldar have that go together well are the war walkers, wraithlords, new wraithguard, the plastic farseer, and I assume the wraithknight and new fighter kit. The fire prism/night spinner kit is newer, but it still includes the problematic falcon/wave serpent hull.

I don't think so, if I had to pick a star unit it would be Warp Spiders but I don't think there is one standout build. Wave Serpents are excellent but personally I prefer my troops to be Jetbikes.

The really good stuff in our new Codex are Jet Bikes, which are easy to assemble. You want 2-3 Wave Serpents to transport Wraithguard & Guardians. I would recommend 2 Fire Prisms kits. You could round things out with Dark Reapers & Warp Spiders.

For HQ, you want the Avatar, Autarch with jump pack, Farseer(get a Jet Bike for him), a couple of Warlocks(get a Jetbike for one), and a Spiritseer or two.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Autarch: Firesabre; warp jump generator; Banshee mask; Scorpion chainsword; Avenger shuriken catapult. 128
Farseer: The Spirit Stone of Anath'lan; singing spear; Eldar jetbike. 135
Spiritseer 70

6 Windrider Guardians: 2× shuriken cannon. 122
5 Wraithguard 305
Wave Serpent: Holo-fields; twin-linked scatter laser; shuriken cannon.

6 Warp Spiders: Warp Spider Exarch (twin-linked death spinner; Fast Shot). 139

Fire Prism: Holo-fields; shuriken cannon. 150
Fire Prism: Holo-fields; shuriken cannon. 150

Really? My main problem with Deldar wasn't the fast and light playstyle, it was the fact that their vehicles just didn't stay together. If the main vehicles dont fit together then I'm definitely not interested

I love the codex and it does have a lot of ways to play, as others said. The new models are some of the easiest to put together. As for the older models? I don't think they are that problematic. Far, far easier than the Dark Eldar who are the most difficult army to assemble, in my opinion. Raiders/Ravagers can be brutal to assemble, and kind of painful too :(

In comparison, Eldar assembly is a piece of cake. The infantry is not that hard despite being finecast, while the Guardian based things are super easy. The tanks practically assemble themselves... if you get the right instructions. I bought 3 Wave Serpents and all had Falcon assembly instructions >_< I figured it out without them though.

I've never built any dark eldar so I can't compare. However, I have found the guardians and dire avengers to be the worst infantry kits I've yet assembled. The torsos don't mate well to the legs, the arms don't mate well to the torsos. I've resorted to pinning and epoxy since they have such fit problems. The basic tank chassis is fairly simple in the number of large pieces it has, but again the fit issues require reinforcement and gap-filling. Certainly more problematic than a rhino or devilfish.

I agree about the guardians and dire avengers. Why are the DA butts a separate piece?!

I have 2 falcons and 2 wave serpents. I didn't have any problems with them when I put them together. I was quite worried because the sprues were horribly warped.

But they went together like peanut butter and chocolate.

The only thing my falcon hulls required during assembly was a handful of clothes pegs (spring type) to clamp the upper and lower hulls together whilst the glue set.

ALL of the mouldings for those hulls had a slight warp issue.

Get Wraithguard and your rockin. These seem, for me so far, to be the replacement for almost all aspects from the elites section. Barring the scorpions but only just.

Avengers are great and I found them not to bad to build either.

Jet-bikes are easy to build and great fun to use.

Serpents and fire prisms are cool too.

I had this with all 3 kits using this chassis. Clamps are recommended. I squirted glue around the lower section, and held them together for 10 minutes.
Jetbikes are easy.
War Walkers are fiddly, but as long as you treat the legs and axle as 1 part, and the body as another, it all sort of makes sense. Don't glue the legs onto the axle, until you're happy with the pose.
Wraithlord is top-heavy, but otherwise straightforward. The dangly cloth bits keep falling off mine.
DA are not easy, but glue the skirt to the legs, and glue them to the base. Adding the body to that is fairly easy after that has dried.

As for the codex, Battle Focus has transformed my game.
I can get troops in range, or run them behind cover after shooting. It make a big difference.
Dire Avengers aren't as good as they were, but DAVU is still useful, now Wave serpents are better.
The Farseer on a jetbike is great.

But, there's a lot of buffs to Run, and not everyone can use them. Taking a jetseer and getting a warlord trait that improves Run is annoying.
